Are 99ers Tier 5 Unemployment Extension Arguments Solid?

Are 99ers Tier V unemployment extension arguments solid? The Tier 5 extension has been a hot topic for months now, and it's been the subject of much political debate.  Whether or not an additional unemployment extension will help the economy as a whole is debatable, and it's easy to see both sides of the issue.

First, can the country afford an extension of benefits? We have been overspending for years, and it's got to stop some time.  Where does the buck stop? Does it stop here, or after the next extension.

Second, some believe that 99 weeks of unemployment is enough, citing that many workers of years past only had 26 weeks of benefits - even if it took them much, much longer to find a job.  Does the extension of benefits encourage people to not work, or at least hold out on offers until "something better" comes along?

On the other hand, extending unemployment ensures that government spending stays within the US and benefits US citizens.  It ensures that American households have the money to pay their bills and to spend on goods and services.  This could potentially increase demand, creating jobs.

The bottom line is this - 99ers have a good argument for a Tier V benefits extension.  Debbie Stabenow's S3706 Americans Want to Work Act is a good start. It will bring 20 extra weeks of benefits to states with rates of unemployment 7.5% or greater.

How to pay for the bill will be the problem, but hopefully capital hill will work it out.

  2. I cant wait until charles johnson loses his job. Or maybe he is one of those employers who think it is okay to hire one peon to do the work of three people, part time at 7.50 hourly and no benefits.

Or probably he is a Republican.

  3. Enough is enough! Legal U.S citizens unite! Help take the steps to save our country take our jobs back and stop this illegal immigrant invasion. What ever happen to taking real action like President Eisenhower’s “Operation Wetback" from 1954 and the American way of mass round ups of illegals aliens, Spy’s & Terrorist and sending them home or imprisoning them? Isn’t that what we have a military for? Support our cause before illegal immigrant criminals have more rights than us. This is our last stand!

If other online articles report unemployment is around 20% and there are 310 million in the U.S census reports. Then there is as many as 62 million people in the U.S that are unemployed & are able to work full-time. Do we have to reach 150 million unemployed before we take action? Also we must take steps to lower local city and state councilmen salaries too they are all robbing & hurting the people they serve. So please read and sign this online petition. "Petition to Reduce the Wages of Congress Men and Women from $174,000 per year to $50,000 per year at “change.org’. " Link is below!

  4. Forget helping the economy, it's about a Tier 5 helping folks put food on their table and a roof over their head.

  6. Without us unemployed losing everything how will all the rich get to buy cheaply all our houses, cars and whatnot? They are the only ones who still are benefiting from us all. They are only ones who get richer while we get poorer. We will never see any tier 5 because we do not count in any unemployed totals and in few months as the present unemployed fall off the systems there will be even more that do not show up on totals and they will say what they want and they don;t want to acknowledge us now let alone when there will be more of us. Vote them all out as they have showed us by not helping us already, by still going on their long vacations and by Obama not helpong us eiher that they do not care one bit about us or what is happening to us. We have allowed our government to take over all our lives for so long that we have no control anymore. Unless you are rich and have money or are famous you amount to nothing in this country. Some country we have that allows what is happening to us to continue on for so long. Our fore fathers are cringing at what our country has turned into.

  8. One simple solution would be to levy a heavy fine on companies that refuse to accept applications and consider the unemployed. Say 10 million / day / rejected unemployed person . All you employed idiots may not know, but several national and multinational companies are discriminating against the unemployed and therefore deserve to be destroyed or at least the CEO/CFO and board members should be called on the carpet and forced to explain why they are discriminating

Yes thanks to these companies unemployment remains high and if you count the 50,000 + that roll of the radar each week and include the under employed we have a national crisis at 30%+

  9. All those who believe it's enough haven't lost their jobs... YET! Wait until you do, then we'll see what you have to say. This article is not factual at all. Where are the facts? The fact that this horrible economic downturn was caused by greed & wallstreet unscrupulousness? The fact that every stupid excuse in the book is trotted out in order not to do the right thing? Stop the lies!!!! 8 Million! 8 Million! 8 Million!!!!!!! Jobs lost!!! Not coming back! What the F!!! are people supposed to do? Start reporting the facts & not just some idiotic opinion to get people's attention. God is watching you.

  11. On November 30th All extensions are set to expire so not only will Congress probably still be dealing with the 99er issue, but the Tier 1 -4 issue as well. Instead of 2 million people they will have 14+ million to deal with.
A Country having 14 + million of its citizens angry and upset willing to do anything to survive is very scary

Will CEO/CFOs alive on 1 Dec be alive on 2 Dec or in 2011 ?
Will elected officials survive attacks ?
Will there be a 60's style protest ?

Only time will tell, but Congress and companies have control over their destiny after all they can either help and create jobs, get the economy moving again and help the unemployed OR THEY can site on their butts and do nothing like they are doing now and tell the unemployed to bend over and take it

  13. "First, can the country afford an extension of benefits? We have been overspending for years, and it's got to stop some time."

Yes, we've been overspending since Bush Jr. took office. Economists agree that as a nation our best economic policy is for government spending to be essentially the opposite of private spending -- when the economy (and thus private spending) are up, the government should spend less and privatize more, and when the economy is in the toilet, the government needs to spend more to reboot the economy.

Unfortunately, Bush did just the opposite of that -- he took a great economy and a decent budget surplus (thanks to Clinton's high tax rates), slashed the tax rates, and then deficit-funded two land wars halfway across the world.

Now, the economy sucks, and the GOP and Teabaggers want to go against all sound economic advice AGAIN and slash spending. There is no better way to make sure that life continues to suck than to follow that advice.

It's not about 'how much deficit spending is too much' -- as long as the economy is down, there is no too much. As soon as the economy recovers, THEN we should go into conservative mode, slash spending, increase taxes, and balance the budget.

"Does the extension of benefits encourage people to not work, or at least hold out on offers until "something better" comes along?"

Mathematically speaking, if you're in the poorest 20% of the country in terms of overall income, you're looking at a relative unemployment rate of around 40%. That means that literally, for every minimum-wage, entry-level job that you might qualify for, there are over a HUNDRED other applicants for that same job.

If you're in the middle class, making around 45k per year, and you become unemployed, you've still got about five people for every job opening.

When you stop and think about those numbers, it's not about "holding out for a better offer" -- there ARE NO BETTER OFFERS. Most of us are simply holding out for AN OFFER, period.

Especially when you consider that the highest rate of relative unemployment is in the bottom 10% (income-wise) -- meaning that the people who are least able to find a job are also the ones least able to afford not having one -- Tier 5 is a social necessity if we want to keep the long-term unemployed from rioting on the streets.

I'm a news blogger (click my name), and I've been researching this issue every day. There is no question about the necessity of Tier 5 -- there is only a massive smokescreen thrown up by the GOP on the mistaken belief that they can blame the economy on the Democrats and thus win the mid-term elections. Every argument they make is flawed on first premises, and any economist that's not in their pocket won't hesitate to tell you so if you ask. (For the record, I'm pissed at the Democrats, too, and I'm an independent, so it's not just politics that's making me say that.)

  18. I find it shameful that our government uses our tax dollars we all contribute to bail out everything except the Americans who contribute the money. We have money for illegals, wars, big business...but they call those who are suffering unemployment as a result our governments poor choices lazy...my hope for this nations future is dwindling. Yes, entitlement programs are costly during hard times. But nothing is as costly as our governments own arrogant sense of entitlement. Washington has bitten the hand that feeds it for the last time...

Think about it. We need ALL state Dem senators to say yes and a few Repubs too. Do you think that ALL Dems are going to say yes even if it doesn't include thier state?

  25. I didnt get 99 weeks either even though Im called a 99'er. As sick as it is our goverment is letting us all lose our homes and everything we have as long as they can. Then when they finally have to step up there will be a few million who couldnt hang on and they will look at that as a savings, ones they didnt have to help. As they are sinking us all thier friends are the ones buying our foreclosures and making money off us.

  26. And then there's Nancy P.,.... sort of like a modern day Marie Antoinette,

"If the people are hungry,... let them eat cake."

Where did she ever come from ? Of course I am sure that she knows what it is like to loose her house, car,.. job, and sit up at night thinking (fearing) about how you will pay the Bills (again) next month (or that your kid is graduating High School next year),.. those thoughts start (again) about 3 days after the rent/mortgage is paid,.. (and you think: How long can I keep this up)?

Do they in Washington NOT realize that every week there are MORE "99'ers ?"

How big a number (or body count) do they need before they realize they have a National Problem ?

We have spent over 300 BILLION Dollars fighting 2 wars (really meaning helping to rebuild the economy of Iraq and now Afghanistan,.... God forgive me, but I just cannot get excited when I hear on the news that we are building schools, creating jobs, and putting food on the tables of those poor unfortunate people) ,.. we give money to other countries,... we even give money to U.S. Drug Addicts (for years,.... not 99 weeks) to bring them back into a society that (most) only ripped off or injured lives,... but never paid a dime into the system.

But, some poor Bastard who has always worked and paid into the system for years,.... has his government turn it's back on him,... "because 99 weeks is enough."

  29. If there were ever anything worth putting on your refrigerator door to
daily remind us of what we have to do come November, this is it...

Subject: Retribution is less than 5 months away!

Take a look at this and remember elections in November 2010.

    1. U..S. House & Senate have voted themselves $4,700 and $5,300 raises.
    2. They voted to NOT give you a SocSec Cost of Living raise in 2010 and 2011.
    3. Your Medicare premiums will go up $285.60 for the 2-years
    4. You will not get the 3% COLA: $660/yr.
    5. Your total 2 year loss and cost is -$1,600 or -$3,200 for husband and wife.
    6. Over these same 2 years each Congress person will get $10,000 and THEY DO NOT WANT US TO GET A TIER 5. WOW.
    7. Do you feel used? work all your life and then nothing.
    8. Will they have your cost of drugs - doctor fees - local taxes - food, etc., decrease?
    9. NO WAY.
Congress received a raise and has better health and retirement benefits than you or I.
 Why should they care about us and give us a TIER 5. they care about themselves.

Send the message to these individuals --- “YOU'RE FIRED!”

In 2010 you will have a chance to get rid of the sitting Congress: up to 1/3 of the Senate and 100% of the House!
Make sure you're still mad in November 2010 and remind their replacements not to screw-up.

It's time for Amendment 28 to the Constitution.
"Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators or Representatives, and Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators or Representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States ."
Let's get this passed around, folks - these people in Washington have brought this upon themselves! It's time for retribution. Let's take back America .
WE NEED A TIER 5 NOW, NOT LATER.

  37. "First, can the country afford an extension of benefits ?".

Can the country afford not to provide an extension of benefits.
My question is, how will states handle millions of men, women and children needing food and shelter. Millions of families are not only destitute, but demoralized and frightened.
Also, how do states manage overburdened entitlement programs that are losing funding and employees, due to cuts ?
Can the country afford to add more unemployed to the unemployment numbers in 2011. Add that to deflation, outsourcing, bipartisan impotence and manipulation and the question about extension is overshadowed by a much larger problem.

Given the magnitude of the current economic crisis, withholding an extension that would feed millions is not only inhumane, but practically besides the point.

It will take much more than withholding ui extensions to avert the major economic disaster that is brewing if action, by every sector, isn't taken now.

I did not receive 99 weeks of unemployment, as a matter of fact I have only received 47 weeks all 4 tiers included. And to put the cherry on top of it all, I am not even eligible to receive Nutritional Assistance because I'm unemployed, don't receive benefits n e more, and am going to school. In order for me to be eligible for NA I have to be working at least 80 hours a month. I can't even go to the food bank every week here in Phoenix, because u can only go every 60 days. I tried prostitution, and that doesn't even work cuz no one wants to spend the money on a date. I love my country, but the govermnet needs to be shot on the spot. 40. I have an excellent solution to funding a Tier V - Import tariffs! Our jobs are going overseas - so why not obtain the money to cover additional unemployment benefits from the same source? If you insist on buying an Asian product (if you even have a choice anymore), your money will be used to help the people you're putting out of work.

As an additional benefit, the tariff will encourage companies to do the manufacturing inside the US in order to avoid their product being tariffed. That puts Americans back to work.

Tariffs work, and yet no mention of them has been made in DC.

  44. A Tier 5 extension is truly needed. But the bill that has been introduced will only help the unemployed in states with unemployment rates of 10% or higher.

What about the rest of us? I am in a state that the rate is 9.2%. Does that mean I am to continue to receive no extension benefits while unable to acquire a job?

I feel that all the states should be included in the extension.

Let's continue to fight for everyone unemployed not by choice.

  51. Robert Reich recently said that 99er's in their 50's won't get another job and need to cut back...like we haven't been for over 2 years. Well, don't listen to that dem, keep on plugging away. I just got a job better than my last one. There still are employers out there who don't discriminate against an older worker who has been out of work for over 2 years. The dems want us to become more dependent on them for our livelihood. What helped me was to turn my own attitude around to the positive and it helped during my interview. I came across as an energetic positive personality. So don't give up and listen to the dems that keep putting us down.

  52. It must be nice to be in Republican shoes, cause they don't know what it means to be broke!

  53. Government entitlement programs are what got us in this mess in the first place. The government has to take the money from taxpayers and redistribute it to the unemployed. 99 weeks of pay for no work is crazy and still everyone here calls for more. There is no way that this is sustainable. Communist / socialist redistribution of wealth – the government steals from the “rich” to give the “poor” will be the end of this country. It is only used to buy votes, when the gang that uses this tactic gets enough power they will no longer need to buy your vote and your bailout checks will stop. Personal accountability and responsibility is the only way you will survive what is coming. I have news, there is no economic recovery and there will not be one with this mindset. You will starve if you only look to the government to help you.

  54. The whole fucking government is on welfare too. Its called our tax money. I dont see them going without. I want to see some of them try this for a while but they are still bussy taking what taxes they can from the few that are working. If you think its ok to pay for thier welfare then good for you. I am tired of hearing people cry about us 99ers with thier heartless comments. Those people can give the government all thier money if they want. If they are that stupid to allow someone else all the luxury and you get squat then have at it. Our government has robbed us blind, abused our children and domestically violated each and every one us 99ers. They should be arrested for all illegal acts against mankind. All the other people out thier who enjoy giving most of their hard earned dollar to the government to keep them in homes, with plenty of food, electricity, gas, insurance, childcare ect.ect.ect., You wouldnt mind paying my share would you?

  55. The belief that "entitlement" programs are the reason we are in this crisis, or is perpetuating this severe recession, is the thinking of a simpleton. Once again, the unemployed are looking for jobs and assistance to feed and house their families.
People prefer NOT to eat out of dumpsters or live out of their cars if at all possible.
The paranoid "government is taking us over through entitlement programs" argument blows, and if YOUR Washington representative is running on that, he will be out of a job in November.

  56. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps is not happening when banks won't lend to small business start-ups.
People who say this are full of it and know it.
They'd be the first to cry about UI if they lost their job and saw what was really going on out there. They'd crap their pants.

  57. Why not use the soon to be expiring "Bush Tax Cuts" to pay for the unemployment extensions. There has never been a tax cut that paid for itself and did not add hundreds of billions of dollars to the deficit. Those tax cuts didn't create jobs unless you are a business that uses illegal workers its daily operation. All things aside, the unemployed do pay taxes on those unemployment compensation benefits. If there is anyone who disagrees with me I can show them my 2009 income tax return and if they still don't believe me maybe they should ask their friendly neighborhood tax agent

  58. i am so sorry people. it aint going to happen. the rest of the world does not appreciate it but the U.S is a cold place. this would not be the first time that our country has shown an immoral lack of concern for its people to placate the petty and unrealistic concerns of the wealthy elite. i would say its time to stop being quiet humble and hopeful. this is it now or never its time to get out there and go apeshit before we get anymore complicit and apathetic

  59. The problem is larger than unemployment. After decades of corruption, outsourcing, failed legislation, impotent politics and policies, consumer addiction, defaults, foreclosure and bankruptcy, we hit the wall.
This is a national economic paralysis and it will effect everyone, not just the unemployed.
There must be remediating action, but that requires a concerted effort by politicians, legislators, and the corporations to salvage an economy that will shed more jobs if nothing is done now.
This is more than just about employment "numbers" and politics.
Millions of voters are angry, demoralized and have zero confidence in corporations, banks and/or government.
Please continue contacting your representatives with solutions, organize locally and don't give up, ever.

  60. I'm a 99'er. 40 years old and educated thankfully with my wife working. I've had time to spend with my kids and really haven't had to seriously look for work because when I was employed, we put out our money into paying off our mortgage on a modest home. Saved as we should have. Not keeping up with the Joneses. I see all these people with their cell phones (kids also) and have cable service, new clothes, nice cars, and homes they can't afford. When is it enough with the extensions? Can you really say that in 99 weeks you couldn't find some sort of job. It makes it easy to collect a check when you can find a job that pays less than the unemployment check you're receiving. But now that you've waited, you can't find a job to provide for yourself or the lifestyle you've been used to? Why blame the Republicans for this. The big O' and his party don't want to extend this anymore either. These politicians really don't care about this situation. Remember who you may have voted for this past Preidential election and blame your ignorant selves. Can't wait for all this FREE healthcare we'll be receiving also. Pay up people! I could go on but liberals won't open up their minds anyway. There are people that do really need this assistance but I don't think they're in the majority of the 99'ers. Oversee wars, outsoursing jobs, etc. Those are popular excuses. Let's create more gov't jobs. That'll solve all our problems to this economic situation. Raise taxes so our small businesses won't create more jobs in the private sector.

  61. More troll comments with faux stories, keep your fake "I'm a 99er" tale, "there are enough jobs nonsense".
You know no such thing if you are employed or living off your wife or welfare.
You gave yourself away when you attempted to bring politics into your comment.
Any political party that brings harm to its constiutents will be voted out of office.
Your comment fails and you fail.

  64. We need to pressure Congress for tier 5,6, 7 etc.
There are no jobs and the economy is much worse than reported. The Fat Cats in Washington have no clue of what the unemployed are facing! The US instantly gave millions to Pakastin last week.
We spend money foolishly to other countries daily. The unemployed are desperate and needed help months ago. We paid into the system, yet everyone who is lucky enough to be working views the unemployed as unmotivated and lazy. It is not easy to loose your home to foreclosure and to sell all your possesions for food. The hardest thing I did was to ask my family for money to buy gasoline. I am 51 years old and have nothing now. Are 99-ers suppose to roll over and die? Does anyone want to trade places with me that has not walked in my shoes? I rather be working, as I have for decades. No health insurance, no food, no future...oh, what a wonderful life. Stop judging and have some compassion for those whom are facing the worst crisis in the history of our country.

  66. Any politician refusing to help Americans who have worked most of their lives in this Country don't need to be in office. We have paid for welfare, illegal immigrants, schools, hospitals, contribute to their getting elected. And in our hour of need they turned their backs on us.I don't care how they get the money, just get it and soon. Anyone who is not in favor of 99er's getting an extension should be voted out of office. That goes for Obama too. If u are not talking daily about the Americans who are suffering should be voted out.We should be the most important issue on their agenda.
