Are Unemployment Extension and Tier 5 Benefits For Uneducated?

The unemployment extension and Tier 5 benefits bill are a big political topic.  99ers are more likely to be uneducated or less educated American workers, according to one economic advisor to Obama.

Wall Street CEO John Corzine met with Tennessee Senator Bob Corker recently and discussed, among other things, the unemployment extension. This all happened in an economic panel on ABC’s “This Week” with Christine Amanpour – and also present was Obama’s economic advisor Laura Tyson.

Tyson said the following about education in America :
The unemployment problem is primarily a problem for people who have a high school -- who don't have a high school education or just have a high school education.
Unemployment for those with college educations is now 4.5 percent. Unemployment for those with more than a college education, below 4 percent. We have a problem of education in this country, and we have to educate more of our young people fully through college education. Let's take this as an opportunity to do that.
Recently Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) brought up the S.3706 bill which is the Tier 5 extension adding 20 weeks of benefits to the already 99 weeks available. Among programs that include tax incentives for businesses to hire the long term unemployed, should they also include educational incentives as well? Perhaps tax breaks to for-profit colleges that reduce or waive tuition for the long term unemployed, or subsidies for meal plans and tuition for the unemployed?

  2. ahahah find something better to do then trying to justify the reasoning behind the governments lack of progress that the unemployed citizens pay for. I am very good in my profession and have college education, not tech school but University. So spare trying to point the finger at us and now on top of it claim we're stupid which is why were still collecting. You overpaid simpletons are the idiots who got us into this recession in the first place. So go back to school and get degrees in understanding the significance of your positions before you tell us 99ers we need more education. If that was the case then how come mcdonals and burger king arent even highering ahahaha dumb asses

  3. What idiots. Just an excuse. They don't seem to get it or don't want to. I was in Printing for over 30 yrs. and it is going out. No jobs now and if you have Companies getting out then there is also a chain reaction. All our jobs are oversees and nothing left for us older people. I think they want us to fail in this country.

  4. That is total poppycock!!! They would like to believe that us 99ers are all high school drop outs. That would make them feel better because then they can blame us for not finding a job, however the reality is there are no jobs cause the Banking System and Trade laws passed by politicians hosed this country and all our jobs with it. I am so voting out every one this November.

  5. I graduated 1 yr ago from college, I am 22,000 in debt! How dare them, they are just tryin to saying to make themselves feel better.

It wouldn't matter if we were uneducated or not, there is still no jobs.

  6. I'm just not getting it; the people running the government must have some level of education, but it certainly isn't showing. And what do we say about those highly educated people who are being laid off, then jumping out of buildings to their death. Hmmm. The way I see it, it is the kind of education people receive these days that drives another form of slavery. To hell with being programmed for a job and a slave to the system. Promote entreprenership. Leave the tasks to those who want to perform tasks. There's nothing wrong with that, and it doesn't take yee gobbs of dollars in education to perform. Lets use some common sense.

  8. This is total insanity! Spoken by people with no real worries as far as job security. I am a sales professional with over 20 years in the consumer products industry...stellar career and job performance appraisals and college educated. Has anyone stopped to think how it is for someone over 50 being thrown into a job market with this recession? I am losing my house over this and oh guess what? because I am in so much debt my credit report will not be up to par so that will make me look even less appealing to employers. When is this going to stop?

Why doesn't the government look into the teacher's union. Don't you think you could lose some fat there by not asking them to retire 2 or 3 years early and pay them for it?

  9. It's apparent that the blame game always goes
toward education. I personally have a high school education and have made more than college
grads. There is a lack of companies willing to
spend money on labor and the jobs are being outsourced. There is no problem with the labor
force there is a problem with companies scaling
back and adding or combining positions. The government has to spend billions on getting America back to work. FDR did it after the depression. The labor makets are constant with
government spending and State Grants, roads, bridges, Its up to the States and
the Government to get people back to work. The
Fast food companies are not going to do it.
Vote for a change in local government, No one
is going to get it done.VOTE ! Let Your Voice Shout Loud VOTE !!!!!Its up to us to vote for
    change.

  10. This is nothing more than B.S.! I have a degree in engineering, and was gainfully employed for 44 years. I really resent these pompous asses sitting in there do nothing jobs, trying to come up with a reason why so many people are out of work, other than blaming the real cause. Just like the scum politicians to pull this. First they say we're lazy and want to live off of government handouts, now their telling us we're uneducated. These are the same people who are destroying America! People, enough is enough! These people need to go! This is America, I can't ever remember Americans being treated like this! Get rid of Obama, he's not doing a damn thing for this country, and get rid of these politicians that have lost touch with reality especially the Republicans. I am so degusted with this whole mess. I would love to be working, but I guess I'm to stupid to hold down another job!

  12. This makes me sick. I can't believe people are really believing this BS. What difference does it make? I know people with college degrees who aren't having any better luck than I am. I can't believe that news writers are sleeping at night after writing these kind of lame articles. People aren't just losing their houses...there are children starving here NOW in this country. Stop wasting your time writing these articles that perpetuate the help that these kind of people need. This kind of media isn't solving anything or bringing people together...its further dividing us.

I myself have a BS in Advertising, Marketing & Communications and have been unemployed since late 2008, with the exception of temporary work. I also know several unemployed Americans who have degrees in various majors, who have also been unemployed for almost two years. The men & women who are running this country need to stop making assumptions and do the job they are paid to do, this includes CREATING JOBS!!! WE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, WHO ARE UNEMPLOYED, WOULD APPRECIATE IF YOU WOULD STOP INSULTING OUR INTELLIGENCE!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I am pretty much same thing with 32 years as Controller to CFO. I thought job market was bad in 1990 recession. Never even came close to this. Congress just won't face the facts or failed math. Not even close to enough jobs to prevent the 99ers numbers growing by millions each month when 1 job for every 5 and even that is understated. They let Wallstreet steal the money and crash the economy. They told us with stimulus how by now UI be back to normal. They tell us a lot with how we don't look hard enough. Someone teach congress math. Not enough jobs is why we are so many 99ers. Not lack of effort looking. Maybe if they didn't vote themselves life UI called a pension. When they get voted they get paid for life. If they did not have that they feel more urgent need to pass tier 5. We get 2 years and they get UI for life. How come they are not worried about what that adds to deficit? Only thing they seem to worry about with deficit is one thing tier 5 cost. A long list of other things they should worry about first. Vote them all out since they rather give our money to other countries then help us here.

  33. It is both sides at fault. Republicans ask how we pay for tier 5 and say use stimulus money already in budget. Then dems say no why? So they can waste it on things less important then unemployed being helped? They are like 2 kids arguing and look so stupid. Dems just use the damn stimulus money and that eliminates republicans argument. Not using stimulus is the most stupid argument out there to keep from passing tier 5. Use it! At least it won't be wasted like it has up to now.

For their information, I have a high school diploma and worked my a-- off to become a Vice President of a Proprietary School. I could run circles around some of those that have degrees. I would challenge some to see if they would be capable of standing in my shoes when I was employed. A piece of paper does not gurantee you a job in todays world. We have paid our taxes all of these years and now we can not benefit for what we have paid for. We are all in this together. If I wouldn't have challenged my employer over a refund of a federal student loan in what I believed in, then I would have been employed and kissing a--.

What I joke. Or this person who wrote the article is working for "Congress". One think I'll say, there is a majority of the long term unemployed who are 45 and over. That's because companies don't want to hire "mature" workers, sometimes because the insurance rates are higher to pay health, life, disability insurance. So you go to school, college, work hard, for what? Then you're "too old" to work?

It just goes to show you how people want to kick you when your down. Hopefully soon they will know how that feels!

    ReplyDelete
  44. If this doesn't beat all! I've worked all my life (now age 64). Held a great job for 15 years and was hoping to retire at age 66. At 61, was laid off. Now, who is going to hire a 64 year old especially when there are so many younger people out of work? I'll take it a step further. Five months later my daughter (College Grad. Bachelor's Degree) was laid off. Several months after that, my other daughter (College Grad. Bachelor's Degree) laid off, one year later, my other daughter (Master's Degree)was laid off. So much for the "uneducated" bull crap. Companies scaled down, outsourced or simply closed shop. We need some "Educated, Common Sense" people in Washington to turn things around in this country. The bafoons in charge haven't got a clue. Isn't that evident? I know there are those who want to put the blame on Republicans but I happen to think they are right. Why doesn't Obama use the rest of the stimulus he's got on hold to help the unemployed. It didn't do any good for the bankers and others he bailed out. It will put food on the table for many of the 99ers until we can vote these morons out of office and get some new blood in Washington; people who have the expertise on how to jump start the economy. People, don't be foolish. Get out there and vote in November. It's our only hope.

Like most who have commented on this article, I'm a highly skilled professional who can't find a job. I can't take a job that doesn't exist, and I have many skills in many varied areas.
As for the issue of education - Laura Tyson should have her face slapped for her stupidity. Every State has been forced to make education cuts, even school kids are crying out for help to avoid further cuts to their educations and subsequent futures. Do the children get help? NO, they get more budget cuts, then a moron comes along to tell us all how stupid the unemployed are and that We The People have an educational crisis.
We the People do have an educational crisis, and it has been brought on by #17 of the 45 Declared Communist Takeover Goals (1963 Congressional Record): "Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers' associations. Put the party line in textbooks."
The genius advisors should give some thought to really helping the USA, instead of spouting stupid bs.

Giving us benefits whenever the hell they decide to take up the vote is still going to leave a lot of people in a hole, made much bigger by late fees, penalties, etc. I also resent them saying that we have no education. F*&k you. There are more highly educated people in America than ever. The problem is companys have successfully been screwing over any employee who isnt an executive for the last few decades. You go to college, get yourself in a ton of debt and are expected to take a job making the same amount you would have made with a GED!!! Give me a f*cking break. This job problem is about the rich exploiting the poor, we buy their overpriced goods and services and we accept being overworked and underpaid. This is what America's about. I cant wait to get a job, so I can save up enough to get the hell away from this country.

  60. I totally agree, WOW!!! I'm 56 yrs and have 35+ yrs in the computer/clerical field, just now persuing a BA. It doesn't make a difference whether one is educated or not; only the higher income you made, the harder you are hit. Could not even qualify recently for a senior program making $7.25/hr part-time because I wasn't impoverished enough and did not score enough "points", even though I qualify for food stamps. You don't qualify for government programs to gain employment unless you have a minor in the house, or if you live in a specific county. It's terrible how the older (10-15 yrs prior to retirement age) people are being overlooked for employment with all of our wisdom and experience; not to mention how hard we have worked all of these years and many of us raised children that have jobs and we don't. God Bless the Children anyway. Many of the older people aren't getting jobs because of health insurance coverage. They say we are moving to an age of home-based and contractor work. My Son was a plumber for 13 yrs, and gifted as my Father, he now is into sales, and doing better than many. Suggest that you consider sales, if you can handle it. It's ridiculous; how I apply for 20-50 jobs per week with little or no feedback; now being told that I have to redo the resume to be sure that I include "keywords." What next:)

What do we do when our UI ends?????? How does one get back on their feet if they are literally on the streets??????

  68. I have a friend who was laid off by Wells Fargo. He signed up with a temp agency and was working through the temp agency for Wells Fargo. After a few days of this he was contacted by the temp agency and told when he was laid off he had no rehire rights therefore he could not work for them again, even through a temp agency. Why? Do we not have any recall rights? Could they not just ask us if we are willing to take a pay cut if that is what their goal is? I just don't understand this at all and it seems horribly unfair.

  69. Evrything the government is doing is unfair. They are abusing and starving our kids, taking thier homes away and are domestically abusing all us 99ers. They have been feeding us BS for so long that they think we are stupid. unfortunately they have gotten away with so much for so long that we are supposed to believe everything they say. I think that they think they have us brainwashed. WHEN DO THEY STOP INSULTING OUR INTELIGENCE? DO THEY REALLY THINK WE ARE ALL THAT STUPID? IT REALLY IS TIME TO REMOVE THEESE LEACHES FROM OFFICE EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE PAID FOR LIFE.

  70. Please I have two graduate degrees and worked in upper level management in a factory. Now am I uneducated? NO. From reading these posts on here, none of us are and does it really matter? NO. We are ALL just trying to survive. Stop analyzing and just the bill so we can eat, sleep, and keep utilities on WHILE TRYING TO FIND A JOB

  71. Some of you have the notion that you can solve problems by throwing one politician and/or president out and put another in. You wont solve this crisis this way. Neither Obama or any other politician in Washington is running the game here. The global elite are the people collapsing the system on purpose to create their one wrold facist economic system. Their agenda is to destroy middle class america. This is a rich mans world where only the millionaires and billionaires can play. We can never play in their billion dollar playground because we aren't one of them, and they aren't one of us and because of that, they could care less about anyone below the rich man.

If you think its bad now, you aint seen nothing yet. It will get much much worse. Just wait to when all of our taxes go up beginning Jan 1, 2011; and let me tell you, this tax hike is designed to cripple every working middle class citizen.

For those of you that know nothing about Agenda 21 of the global elite, you had better wake up and get a clue. Obama aint the problem folks, he is just a puppet.

  72. I have a job but my husband has been laid off for 18 months now. His unemployment is about to end and no job in sight. He is not educated but I do not believe that spending more money on education for those in their 50's is gonna get them a job! There are plenty of educated people and look NO JOB for them either! So stop making excuses and playing the blame game tryin to make gov't look good cause THERE NOT! THEY ARE JUST LOOKING FOR VOTE, PERIOD!

  74. Just pass the tier 5 bill and help your own! Then worry about war, immigrants, gay marriages, and where the President's wife went for vacation and where they will spend their next vacation on taxpayers money!

  75. I have been unemployed for 2 years this July. My benefits have run out, my husband and my lifetime savings are almost drained. I am in my 60's with no one willing to hire me. We have not sunk yet but are quickly moving toward it. The 5th tier could save us. We have worked our whole lives to see everything being lost piece by piece. My heart goes out to those struggling harder than we are because I know what a hard battle it is. The government has turned their backs on us now but I am guessing come Voting time we will become important again atleast for October and November. I have not been away in over 5 years which was a funeral for a family member out of state. That is the closest to a "vacation" I have had. Sure wish I could take one like our "government does" and still come back to a warm, large, beautiful home and big bank account with all the food I wanted.I am sure they have problems but food and shelter and money is probably not a concern. They talk about spending our "childrens money" but if the parents cannot survive now, what is going to happen to our children now not in the future generations they are talking about. Comes to reason if the "parents are struggling now so are their young children. What kind of reasoning are these people using .I have always supported our government but they need to get their priorities in order. The American people need to come first.

  76. Enough is enough! Legal U.S citizens unite! Help take the steps to save our country take our jobs back and stop this illegal immigrant invasion. Support our cause before illegal immigrant criminals have more rights than us. This is our last stand! If other online articles report unemployment is around 20% and there are 310 million in the U.S census reports. Then there is as many as 62 million people in the U.S that are unemployed & are able to work full-time. Do we have to reach 150 million unemployed before we take action? Also we must take steps to lower local city and state councilmen salaries too they are all robbing & hurting the people they serve. So please read and sign this online petition. "Petition to Reduce the Wages of Congress Men and Women from $174,000 per year to $50,000 per year at “change.org’. " Link is below!

    Pass it on!

  78. I was a Purchasing Agent for a large food company for 25 years. Have a massive amount
of experience and education. I have been out
of work for 3 years. The company closed
and any product's still being manufactured has moved to Georgia, where unions are a dirty word.
Republican Union breaking for 8 long years finally won in New Jersey and 350 people lost their jobs for cheaper labor else where.. so after 30 years of paying into Unemployment, I would like to have it offered back to me as long
as it takes for our country to wise up and recover.

  79. In the hood where the economy has been in a depression since the last depession, people have developed ways of surviving. The food stamps that are given out to the poor, are then bartered for money to pay for things like rent, electricity and basic needs. Those with usable skills such as carpentry, auto repair, etc. are used to keep the community going. My advise to you guys is to go out meet your neighbors and neighbors neighbors. Campaign for any neighbor jobs available instead of feeling helpless. Unemployment benefits will not be around forever. Recovery starts and ends with you.

  80. Isn't it scary that the president is advised by Tyson? I'd like HER job please Mr. President.
Obviously she's after the reaction or is just an idiot.
I have a BS of Science and have been out of work for 2 years-Have had a handful of interviews without success. I am a single parent. Now my child and I are living off the very little savings I have left.
WAKE UP, WE NEED A TIER 5 ASAP.

PS: REALLY poor timing by the Obama's and Congress to act on their job perks/lavish vacations. I question their sincerity to service the American people.
I can't help but feel I'm surrounded by heirarchy who can't seem to agree on a solution and get the job done. Meanwhile, millions of us who can contribute effectively to the solution are without paychecks. WTF???

  81. IF we do not keep worrying them in office by sending emails, faxes, etc., they will never get the message. Please email the white house your congressman, etc, Tell you what I sent mine and the white house a letter along with a copy of all of my bills and my resume. Let them pay it and see just what all I have to pay just to survive. I suggest we all do it and do it daily.

  82. Well, the way I see it..they are purposely holding out on another extension, They think that if they hold out long enough..and then "dangle" another extension in our faces that we will be sooooo grateful and kiss their arses...Well, if they do pass another extension, I will gladly take it....but, I will NOT thank them or kiss their arses....they're playing freaking games with our lives...all for a freakin vote....well, give me the extension ...but I WON"T vote for you

  84. I totally agree with ALL 99ers have NO EDUCATION.....THEY ARE LOOSERS ALL DRUGGIES AND LAZIES! I have never been been an unemployed LOOSER and I will NEVER be unemployed!
WHAT A DISCRACE!...99ERS ARE ALL LOOSERs

99ers are patheticly waiting for republicans to change their view but they will never!

Let me put it to your feeble minds quite clearly: Democrats will not pass legislation prior to the election in which unemployment numbers will skyrocket after the election, they'll be out of power and the government will be going to work figuring out on where they can cut, not spend they created the bubble in the first place so they know exactly when they will allow a new tier!

I bought a new refrigerator today and it will be shipped tomorrow. I can keep the box for any of you that are interested. If you line the outside with plastic, it should manage to make it through the winter.

the 99er this winter will die sleeping in their car via carbon monoxide poisoning. Hopefully, your children will be in the backseat!
so we can kill you jobless fools from the root!

    P.S. GET A JOB PLEASE
CHARLES JOHNSON (Health Care Proffesional and business owner)
