Could 99ers Tier 5 Unemployment Extension Be Delayed Because Declining Jobless Claims Data?

The 99er Tier 5 unemployment extension is very important to workers who have been without a job for over 99 weeks or almost (or over) 2 years. However, jobless data released today indicates that claims decreased more than expected. Given that this is “good” news, will opponents use it as a metric to show that the economy is turning around and the unemployment extension isn’t needed?

I would beg to differ.
A consistently declining jobless claim data would actually point for a tier 5 extension in a more favorable light. Why? It shows that the 20 weeks could be enough for many of the 99ers (at that time, 119ers) to find work.

Some of the opponents of the bill claim that even if the extension is passed, it just prolongs the problem. They claim that at the end of the 5th tier, a tier 6 would be needed, then a 7 and so on and so forth. However, if jobless claims decrease and the economy is adding jobs that will no longer be the case.

A tier 5 extension is still needed right now, even if the situation is getting better. The recently released data could be an indication that things are turning around – or it could just be a fluctuation of the rate.

  1. When will congress wake up? One week good jobs report, one week bad etc. The net effect is we don't have jobs to make big dents in UI levels. The job fairy won't be showing anytime soon. The fact is over last 2 years since summer 08 UI is still high. I believe when stimulus passed President told us how UI be way down this year. Wrong! That is all we need to know. The math for 2 years shows us it's not getting better. They spent billions on job stimulus. It simulated no help to bring UI back down below a normal 6%. Instead of giving AIG's, Banks, other countries 100s of billions help the Americans in need first. Then go debate how the other things get paid for. They felt it was right to give 180 billion to AIG we will never see paid back. Yet argue how we pay for more UI? Better start understanding the 99ers will be growing by millions for years. Help these people before wasting more billions. The job fairy is not going to happen for years. So better understand we need to fund helping the long term unemployed until things get much better in job market. We are not even close. For those who way when does it end? How long do we pay? Well again first answer how long do we send billions to other countries. How long do we bail out banks etc. When that stops then we can decide when UI ends. There are a lot of billions to be saved on things before telling us we cannot afford more UI. Do that first before ever bringing up how long do we pay to help unemployed victims. No matter what unemployed do not enough jobs to employee more then 1 out of 5 looking. Math again shows it's not people are not looking because they get UI. Just not enough jobs period.

  2. Keep the Dollar Bill Switch to a $1 Coin. This is your big issue? When you state has over 12% UI rate? Your number 1 issue is helping the unemployed in your state. Yet that isn't even listed ahead of do we switch to a coin $? Wake up. This is what Ca Senators have listed on their web sites as their current issue. No wonder Congress is so bad. Their own state has 12% UI but they want to work on do we make a dollar coin. Unbelievable. We have the most stupid people we elect to congress.

  8. The stuation isn't getting better. The claims are less because people stopped claiming a couple weeks after their benefits ran out. It doesn't mean they went back to work it just means they got tired of claiming for nothing. Wake up people, seriousely!!!

  9. I am scared to death. I have one more week of being one of the "99"er's...I work part time at $8.50/hr. I have enough for rent and utilities for next month. But what about after that? I have so many applications and resumes out. But so does everyone else. I truly believe I will be pushing a K-mart cart. In all of my adult life I've never been this worried or scared. We really do need the tier 5. Scared to death.

Maybe they will have to go to the food bank to get beans and rice to feed their kids. Or maybe they will just use some of the money they have scammed the working class out of all these years

  12. Tier 5 extension needs to be passed now.
I live in Chicago, Illinois where the July unemployment rate is 10.3% .
I work in the construction trades namely as a union electrician (Local 134).
We have over 3,000 electricians that have signed the the out of work book at the referreal hall.
I have been out of work since October 08. No jobs except part time work that you can't support a family with.
The Stimulus Act did put some people to work.
Roads are being repaired but maybe the money should have been used to affect a greater group of people.
Infrastructure updates need to be done.
Schools,Government Buildings, and other municipal projects affect more building trades than road construction.
Installing Green Technology will help with job creation but it can't stop there.
The banks & auto makers received tax payer money to get them through that lean period.
Now it is the time to back the citizens of our great nation.

  13. If you 99ers think that Obama or the government or your precious democrat party cares about you the shivering worker, I have some news.

The only reason that you have received any bailout or entitlement money is to buy your vote. When the regime has gained enough power your vote will not be needed and your benefits checks will stop.

Start taking personal responsibility and stop leaning on the government. How many unemployment checks did the settlers get while they were on the Oregon trail? What a disgrace to this country and western civilization.

If you could read you could understand that its the precious REPUBLICANS LIKE YOURSELF. Unemployment is not welfare or a hand out. WE have WORKED and cannot find jobs thanks to Bush and Cheney, and CLINTON signing the NAFTA bill. Therefore, the government is suppose to handle these things and yes if a Tier 5 is needed its needed and plenty more after that until the REPUBLICANS ARE VOTED OUT OF OFFICE. The REPUBLICANS want to keep Bush's tax cuts for the rich and they want to keep taking care of the rich not us poor folks.

  19. Such violent responses and yet so simple. The socialist and communist policies that you crave are the very ones that have brought you to the brink of stavation. Study just a little history (hopefully you can read) and you will find that socialism and communism have always led to lack and in some cases within the last 100 years to the death of 10s of millions of workers just like you. Take this as a friendly warning and be thankful for a little enlightenment that could save your life.

The Tier 5 needs to be passed immediately!!

  21. It is just a total disgrace that the government still does not want to admit that there is a real problem in our country with unemployment and jobs. Today they seemed so shocked to hear that there were more foreclosures on houses. DUH! What did they think was gonna happen when they turn us down for extensions and we have no money to pay for anything. I just can't believe that they are so clueless on everything but themselves. Our country is just getting worse and these politicians do not care including the President.

    With 50,000 people / week becoming 99ers We need a Tier 5 !

    2
Of course the percentage of unemployed is decreasing after week 100 people are no longer counted We Need a Tier 5

    3
Companies still refusing to hire the unemployed
See Unemployed Need Not Apply We Need a Tier 5

    4
To the poster complaining about a $ coin
Average life of a coin is 10 to 20 years while a $ bill is 18 months
Over all there would be a savings

If Congress fails to act to provide for a Tier 5 and extend all the other Tiers, then there will be political unrest perhaps in December .

    The QUESTION IS
Will Congress gamble and hope that civil unrest does not happen ?

Yes ! , But they will be the one that have to answer when crime increase and riots occur

The numbers are only going down because some claims hit the maximum. They won't count you anymore. I tried to keep calling in, and the recording actually came back at me saying I was working and could no longer collect when I hit the max. The system is lying to the country.

Congress can't get anything done there always bickering back and forth and damn republicans object to everything the democrats try to do to better the economy. FUCK YOU IN THE ASS REPUBLICANS!!! 34. Hey Diane, until you have some real facts don't post idiotic comments. I happen to be unemployed, was a branch manager for 20+ years, can't find a job, was never arrested or voilent in my life.....so...let me make some generalizations about you....you must be a fat, lonely, despressed Republican with no life. How about that.

    ReplyDelete
  35. We'll see how violent you get when you loose everything you worked all your life for.

Here is about "taking the responsibility and not leaning on the government". This government screwed up ... Shipping millions of jobs overseas, tax breaks, bailouts, financing wars. Want me to go on? Who has done that? And now we are being told "stop leaning on the government". The government was collecting taxes all-right all this time ... and now all of a sudden we are on our own.

That is official - five people per job on average. Here is a little quiz for you. If one gets a job, how many stay with no job? Even a Senate member can do that kind of math. Again, for the Oregon trail advisers, it is the official statistics. The reality ... damn ... in reality it is worse than that.

As far as the Oregon trail - fine. But the Congress and the city governments and all that gentry should be there with us on the line when the gun fires. Then we'll see who is faster. No, they got their elected positions and comfortable salaries, they screwed up, and now we have to go back to the trails. It is THEM who screwed up. We were working and note that no one has a gut to tell us that we weren't working well. Millions laid off because the state of the economy ...

And lastly, the socialism haters. Do not mean to say that communism is good BUT there was no unemployment in socialist countries and the right to work was written in the Constitution. People weren't thrown out of their homes to live under the bridge and weren't killing themselves out of desperation. Now continue hating it ...

  36. I'm amazed how the middle class unemployed are being targeted as the cause of the problem, being lazy, sponging off the government, etc. Two-three years ago we were all working, enjoying a nice life, and then the Republicans and big business drove this economy into the tank....yes, remember folks it was under the Bush and Republican watch when this all started. Now, because of their lack of governing and intelligence, we are made to suffer. There is not one Republican out there that has a solution to "their" mess, so fasten your seat belts if the Republicans gain control in November, it's going to be one hell of a ride (straight down) for the working middle class. Vote the correct way.

  37. I realize today's article is about intial claims. But we are talking about Tier 5 right now, and I was talking about the total unemployment picture which is affecting the Tier 5 being passed. I figured you would get that. There is no need to insult people who are down and make remarks . . ."no wonder you don't have a job." The 99ers are not violent; it is just anger which is justified. Although it would help if some would cool it with the crude remarks because it is just hurting the cause.

with Monsters & Career Builder maybe 500,000 each. What happens to the other 16 million people with out a job even to apply to. The real
    numbers don't lie ! You can't put 16 million
people to work in 20 weeks,if you did. Pass tier
    5. The government has to approve 52 weeks. Forget 20 weeks its just a roller coaster for
the Novemeber Elections. The truth is companies
can,t create enough positons for even 12 million people. Senators please vote tier 5
let people keep their homes for Christmas.

Anyone who is not in favor of 99er's getting an extension should be voted out of office. That goes for Obama too. First to be fired, last to be hired and now left out to dry. Funny but the money that was taken out for UI seems to be a moot point right now? Most of the 99ers worked many years in respectable jobs but now that the GOP runined the economy are unable to obtain jobs. This is disgraceful. WE give money to Pakis who tell us to get out of their country but we cannot help our own people???? GOP makes fun of us??? Hope that karma is out there the GOP needs a big dose of it.

  48. yes tier 5 is needed and it needs to be extended till all of the unemployed that are really looking for jobs such as myself. But the real problem is that this country helps all the wrong people. They should of used the tarp money the right way. First every legal tax paying citizen should of been given a check for 300 thousand less taxes made out to you and your mortgage company then if your mortgage was less you would get balance that you the american citizen could of used to buy new car appliances or what ever you needed also you could of payed off any other debt. And if your mortgage was higher it would of been reduced to a much lower principal which would of been a lower monthly payment. Then the banks mortgage and auto makers wouldn't of needed a bailout. Because WE THE PEOPLE would of stimulated the economy. Secondly get allthe illegals out of this country now use tarp money that hasnt been spent which last I checked was more then half the 1.3 trillion that was allocated to do this by paying americans that are unemployed to round them and their achor babies up put them back over the river. Then get all the unemployed construction workers to build a real wall and keep them out. Now I know we need some of them to pick lettuce but use ones that come here legally. Well thats my quick fix for this problem and just think get them out there would be at least 10 million job openings.

Also Some of the guys I know will be taking your belongings when your off to work if they have no way to support themselves. With no jobs its easy to scope you working class and desperation can bring things out of you that you thought you never had.

But yea decline the bill, let's start a new problem!!

And I'm not sure what others here have been collecting from UC but here in Florida the max pay is 275.00 are you kidding me I made that much a week at my first job 35 years ago. But hell lets just forget about the people that pay taxes in so that these guys can charter jets go on vacation's and live the life of Riley.
