The Rally to Restore Sanity attendance is expected to be bigger than the Glenn Beck rally attendance, but there aren't official numbers for the Beck Rally and it was very controversial.
To figure out which event had more people in attendance, we will have to rely on aerial photos, and once they are made available we will post them.
Which rally do you think will have more in attendance? The Glenn Beck rally or the Rally to Restore Sanity?
There was plenty of room for lounging in the Beck/Palin rally. They're shoulder to shoulder today.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a much happier, upbeat crowd. We need more sanity and less fear!
ReplyDeleteFunny signs : ) Love the "Birthers for Hawaii Statehood"
ReplyDeleteFox news had a news story -- "hundreds gather in the national mall" :D
ReplyDeleteSO GREAT HOW COME THERE ARE ONLY POST + THIS ONE???
ReplyDeleteThe crowd is no more than 25,000-------200,000 short of the amount that RVSP's on the Rally's facebook page.
ReplyDeleteThe Rally was put on by the Daily Show, President Obama and Oprah.
It's almost completely a white crowd.
For those disappointed, please remember this was just a comedy event, not a "political" one
This is exactly what type of idiots make up the Whitehouse staff. Stupid fresh out of college kids who think they know it all. They are trying to turn this country into a one world order, meanwhile the country is faltering like a fish out of water.
ReplyDeleteWhat we need is true patriots to stand up for the America your Grandparent and their parents and so on made this country so great.
We Will Fight Until Hell Freezes Over and then We Will Fight You On ICE!
Tea Party Patriots Unite
There are far, far more than 25,000 people. 10,000 people ALONE showed up on the Huffington Post buses. Bitter Tea Partiers?
ReplyDeleteWho exactly are you fighting? We already have freedom in America. The 'stupid college kids' you refer to will be running the country in the next generation where you are at home hopped up on medication watching reruns of MASH.
ReplyDeleteYou ask for patriotism yet you are trying to fight your own country. Sounds more like terrorism then a tea party...
@anonymous: What's wrong with MASH?
ReplyDeleteAnd that is the problem Tea Party Patriot. We don't think Americans should be fighting each other. We should cooperating to find solutions to the problems facing us.
ReplyDeleteReports are the rally have over 150,000+ at the rally, and that is fact. It might actually be more.
ReplyDeleteDon't know about the Beck vs. Stewart/Colbert head count numbers...but I can guarantee you that the avg IQ numbers are much higher at today's rally
ReplyDelete^

The guy above me is right. "I can guarantee you that the avg IQ numbers are much higher at today's rally"
What reports? Who's expectation? What's the difference? My rally's bigger than YOUR rally - so what? Is it a competition? If so exactly who/what are the competitors? This mentality started with Ed Schultz's 'Beck attack' rally ( Listen to his retorec) and his bogus comparitive attendance claims - a pathetic attempt to promote divisivness. That's exactly what this rally is against.
ReplyDeleteClearly the 'IQ' posters aren't part of the crowd. GROW UP bigots.
ReplyDeleteYes, regressives...There are many more people in DC today than 8/28...Oh, and if you look up, you will also see the sky is red today as well. If it makes you feel less threatened to your liberal cause, please keep deluding yourselves even after the aerial photos clearly show a wide disparity in attendance. What, will you also deny Tuesday's election results too? Nice try...
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree with above. Whoever wrote there was "elbow room" at the 8/28 event is the one who should check his/her IQ. And there was absolutely no trash, signs, or litter present during or after that rally. We'll see how the "enlightened" ones leave the Capitol today, and then you can comment on intelligence or patriotism. With so much hate in here, one could write pages on the evident hypocrisy.
ReplyDeleteDid the Beck/Palin rally donate all the funds generated to charity? The Stewart/Colbert rally is donating all proceeds from merchandise to cleaning up and repairing the national mall and Colbert is requesting donations for donorschoose.org I wish the tea party was this charitable.
ReplyDeleteThe Beck rally donated To a charity supporting families of fallen military
ReplyDeleteYou guys, I think you are losing the point of restoring sanity. Shouldn't be respectfully disagreeing instead of one-upping each other and trying to make the people with whom you disagree look bad? Sheesh.
ReplyDeleteI agree...I believe Tuesday will be a great day to start restoring sanity to this country. Starting, of course, with Congress.
ReplyDeleteAnd here we have it. The Rally to Restore Sanity was about working together, a call for civility amongst all people, the thugs who think themselves as patriots are disparaging anything having to do with any kind of civil discourse. Welcome to 1930's Germany. If you guys take over, my last name will get me on a list of those to be shot or deported.
ReplyDeleteThey're donating their money to repairing the Nat'l Mall because of all the idiots who just left their garbage there.
ReplyDelete"the thugs who think themselves as patriots are disparaging anything having to do with any kind of civil discourse. Welcome to 1930's Germany. If you guys take over, my last name will get me on a list of those to be shot or deported."
ReplyDeleteLOL! This is EXACTLY what thousands of people today gathered in Washington for. "Thugs" "1930's Germany" "list of those to be shot or deported"
Crazy stuff
I don't agree with everything the Democrats do, but I DEFINITELY don't agree with the Republicans.
ReplyDeleteRepublicans want America to be controlled by other countries through corporations, and this is bullshit. This is a huge problem and the Chamber of Commerce should be ASHAMED. They should actually be destroyed. What they are doing is as un-American as you can get and this is why I WILL NEVER vote Republican.
Republicans also want tax cuts for the richest people in the US. What good does that do us? Reason number 2 I will never vote Republican.
Republicans are as far from being patriots as Osama bin Laden. They are probably funding him as well.
See you on Nov 2 teabaggers (nuts in your mouthers)
VOTE DEMOCRAT!
OMG True Patriot is doing it too! Stop saying over-the-top crazy stuff people!
ReplyDeleteRepublicans want to send ALL of our jobs overseas because it is making them rich! Don't fall for their scams like all the uneducated southerners! We need to bring jobs back to American and the Democrats are the only people who will do this. Republicans want to control and destroy our nations. Keep jobs in American. Don't vote for Republicans.
ReplyDeleteWhy do you think Republicans are in favor of accepting foreign money for elections? BECAUSE REPUBLICANS are business partners with these foreign countries! OUR JOBS are overseas because of them. The leaders of other countries want to keep OUR jobs there.
Don't fall for the Republican lies.
I would think it's predictable that the Stewart rally would outnumber the Beck rally, given that liberals outnumber conservatives in DC 10 to 1. Probably the Stewart rally needed a lot fewer out-of-towners to bolster their numbers.
ReplyDeleteDo you peoople really think that anyone buys your unfounded accusations? The only thing Republicans want is equality in opportunity. Why do the rich have to pay more than anyone else? I barely make enough money to make ends meet but I don't want any more than for the gov't to stop raiding my paycheck. After reading the liberal posts I know I will never vote for a liberal.
ReplyDeleteLiberal = Thief!
where are the aerials
ReplyDeleteAs one once said, "Try getting a job from a poor person." The "rich" you speak of pay most the taxes. Its getting hard for me to have pity on those who don't want to help themselves, and solely rely on the government to give them a happy life. LIFE IS NOT EASY, get over it!!
ReplyDelete"The only thing Republicans want is equality in opportunity."
ReplyDeleteWhat a funny statement. You're as brainwashed as they come.
Keep our jobs in America and stop accepting foreign money you Republican thieves.
Republican = Terrorist
I think the real results will be known on Tuesday; God Bless America. If by
ReplyDelete"restore" you mean the constitution, we can all agree. Let's take a step back from socialism and give people the chance to demonstrate the "content of their character". Let us not stoop to bombing buildings like Ayers, and putting decent Americans in concentration camps like FDR. "Progressive" is a mask for hatred. You don't need the government to take care of you like mommy and daddy did, just stand up on your own two feet; you can do it!!
I really would like to believe in a system of equal taxation, however the wealthiest are getting wealthier by taking from the people who make them rich. If they want to pay less taxes, they should provide equal pay to those who earned them their wealth. More people, making more money, means a larger tax base and a lower tax percentage of taxes per person.
ReplyDeleteAs long as there are people who make more money than they can ever spend, and do it while cutting salaries, laying people off and shipping their jobs overseas, they really should pay more (much more) for having the privilege of living in a country that lets them rip off the people who make them wealthy.
Capitalism only works without greed. It's not a "liberal" concept it's an honest one.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^
ReplyDeleteCouldn't have said it better myself. That is EXACTLY how I feel. Thank you.

So...how laughable and out of touch do you have to be to cry foul at the chamber of commerce and say it is responsible for bringing overseas money into a US election when that is precisely how the chosen one got elected?? Where were you when all those millions were coming into the democrats on debit cards in amounts just under the reporting minimum, and in amounts of dollars AND CENTS after the currency adjustment? Of course, you selectively omit that. Nowhere in history has government meddling or control into a free market economy ever been successful, so if you like socialism, go to it...don't bring it here. It only destroys countries...or aren't you paying attention to France or Greece? Don't be an idiot.
ReplyDelete“Daily Show” writer Tim Carvell suggested that the attendance was around 150,000
ReplyDeletewhere are the aerials
It would be nice if we could actually heed the "Restore Sanity" message and drop the "political party" = "hyperbolic analogy" rhetoric. Why are you so angry at those who disagree with you? I find that the people who get angry when their views are challenged tend to be the people who are afraid that they can't actually justify their position with logic and reason. When I find myself in that position, I realize it's time to either think about why I hold that opinion or to change it altogether. If you can't justify it with logic then it's not a useful policy position. This simple rule of thumb would serve many of us on this site well.
ReplyDeleteIf by "Taking from the people who make them rich" you mean employing them, giving them healthcare (until Obamacare destroyed that option, of course), and a savings plan (you know, a 401K), and let them rise to their own level of competence, all good Americans must agree! Americans, by our nature, are the most giving people in the world. We don’t need government to dictate what is good charity and bad charity. I implore you to read history. Look at Teddy Roosevelt, Wilson, FDR, LBJ and other progressives and the cost of their taxation and control. Read the constitution (a great book to start with is Miracle in Philadelphia). Study the character of Washington, Jefferson, Franklin and others to see what their plan really was. Don’t be afraid of challenge and failure but embrace it so that we can continue this grand experiment. Incidentally, you could not have had our republic without the tenants of Christianity (you know the whole “all men are equal in the eyes of God” concept). I look forward to your rebuttal!
ReplyDeleteWhat's interesting is that the "Rally to Restore Sanity" sparked over 80 spontaneous similar - obviously smaller, rallies in countries all over the world. I think these are people that believe in the notions of peace, democracy and fairness. But to really gauge whether (that blowhard)Beck had more at his rally we do have to wait for the aerials. Looking at Google Maps you can see that Becks rally was precisely on the opposite side of the Washington Monument - between the monument and Lincoln Memorial, while Stewarts was on the other side - between the monument and the Capital building. Becks crowd surrounded the reflecting pool, but there's no reflecting pool middle of Stewart's rally so there was a lot more area in the middle... Well anyway - We have to wait to see the aerials. Regardless of whose was larger (OK I think the Rally to Restore Sanity was larger) the more important thing is that the message from todays rally was one of unity and tolerance, not divisiveness.
ReplyDeleteThank you for heeding the "Anonymous" above you, oeidirsceoil. Although I completely disagree with your analysis about the progressive presidents being bad, I at least can understand the paradigm from which you are interpreting events. You are an individualist and a believer in the power of human imagination. You've just proven that not all rightward-leaning people are angry. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI also think that American ingenuity is great. But I also have noticed, as an economist, that the heights of American power, influence, and collective wealth all came after Roosevelt, Wilson, and especially FDR. There IS a place for government in the free market. The First Welfare Theorem, from which free market economic theory was born, states that the free market economy results in an optimal allocation of resources ONLY IF four conditions are met: 1) no externalities (no hurricanes, wars, pollution, or any activity that imposes a cost on others that the person who causes it does not have to pay for); 2) full information (complete transparency in markets and regarding market participants, goods and services, for all participants in the market); 3) perfect competition (no company has the ability to prevent any other company from entering the market and competing with it); and 4) no transaction costs. The market itself can lower transaction costs (#4), but there is no incentive for businesses or other market participants to take care of the first three. That is where government is actually needed in the market.
Now there are a lot of government programs that can be cut, then. But things like stepping in and preventing disaster (or picking up the pieces afterward) and making polluters pay for their pollution is mitigating externalities (#1). Making companies give all the information relevant to a deal so a customer can make an informed decision (and a transaction that benefits both sides) is part of ensuring full information (#2). And the anti-trust and anti-monopoly laws that free marketers ironically (and misguidedly) want to be repealed are there to ensure as close to perfect competition you can get - which means the best goods and services for consumers, and also means that only the truly best companies will survive. I find that this is the result you sound like you're looking for, oeidirsceoil. It's what makes America great.
What is not needed are subsidies (for any industry, old or new) or tariffs (regardless of what other countries do).
Now, if you want the America we can reach, then we need to have top-notch education for everyone. If an inventor invents a high-tech product, he or she is going to need a skilled workforce to build it, and to build it right, so (s)he can compete in this free market. So providing for education will serve everyone. That's part of the recipe for America's greatest years, and we'll need to recapture it.
All of these services need taxes to operate. Now, there's plenty of waste. An awful lot of the "pork" is corporate welfare which I think we can agree is not part of the true free market philosophy. We could re-direct that toward education or to the first three conditions for a free market economy to work. Maybe we could find some money by deciding that we only need to defend our OWN territory from attack through our military, and let Europe, Israel, Japan, etc. take care of themselves. That would probably even let us sustain education, protect the free market, and cut taxes. What do you think?
I agree with you, True Patriot. The Chamber of Commerce is a republican shill lobbying only for the exportation of America's wealth by importing cheap foreign labor from India and offshorting our jobs just to make their CEO members wealthier.
ReplyDeleteIt really sickens me to know that there are so many Americans that blindly follow the taxes are evil and the government takes too much from my meager paycheck. Too bad they can't see that the companies they work for are the culprits because those companies don't pay them a decent, livable wage.
The Sanity Rally was great! Then I come here and find that the insanity of poor people fighting against their own interest. Why would any sane person vote with the wealthy who want only to increase their profits by putting pressure on middle class wages by offshoring your jobs? Crazy! Crazy! Crazy!
ReplyDeleteYes, you're right, there, Sanity...To follow your "logic" all the way through, let's just tax the wealthiest at 100%...Yeah, that's the ticket! That will be the best incentive for americans to become great-I mean, average. That's average, as in the entire country going from exceptional to average. gee, with no job creators, what will the unemployment rate be then? Remind me not to vote for you, okay?
ReplyDeleteCBS commissioned an estimate from AirPhotosLive, a company that provides crowd sizes based on aerial photos. CBS noted that there's a margin of error of plus or minus 9,000. So, by this estimate, there were as few as 78,000 attendees or as many as 96 000......then the National Mall crew said 300 000
ReplyDeleteAhh, economist you are very bright! No sane person would suggest that the government does not have a place in society. Law enforcement, security, the judicial system, and education, etc. can all be areas that the G can be helpful to this republic. My suggestion is that government is extremely inefficient (even in the above mentioned areas), and can only be turned to for those issues that serve the advancement of capitalism, without undermining the free market. (I do take issue with one suggestion: that all people deserve an education - you cannot force education, only offer it; there are many people by their disruptive nature that don't belong in the classroom and should be expelled. In fairness, I was one of those people). No child left behind is a complete failure and should be abandoned to reason.
ReplyDeleteEconomist, is there room for thought that we would have been a better nation if Wilson had not segregated the military? Could FDR have prolonged the GD through his government programs and taxation? Could Johnson's great society, though kind hearted, been a fish instead of a fishing pole.
I completely agree that we should not use the military to advance and police democracy. The military should only be used to force our political will; and you are most correct, let Japan, Germany, and Europe fend for themselves. If we are threatened, stomp the threat like a bug, and leave them to the hell which they have created. It is not my business if a culture believes woman should not be educated or able to vote (as an example). It is arrogant to believe that one culture is superior to another. In the same breath, we should be allowed to thrive in our own culture. This requires the understanding that war will effect the innocent as much as the warrior (think Sherman).
Here is my point: If you and I decided that we would start a non-profit to help homeless single parents, and did not take money from the government, is there any doubt, my friend, that we would run that program better, and more efficiently than any government - federal, state or local- could?. Let us depend on the charity of our fellow citizens, not on the promise of government control. Lets pass on the donkeys and elephants and take a serious look at a third party, without prejudice and name calling, and get back to the roots of our constitution.
Lets get rid of the PACS, lobbyist, and union influence, while we are making our perfect republic! Cheers!!
I must be "Sanity" with the long post that Anonymous just bashed. I never said anything about how taxes should be structured. I just made the case for why there is a place for government in the free market. If there's a place for it, it must be funded somehow. I threw in some ideas as to how that might be able to happen without raising taxes any more than necessary, if at all.
ReplyDelete33% of our budget goes to defense. 60% is for Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. That's 93% of the budget. We aren't taxing enough to cover our services now. I'm willing to hear what your solutions might be, but I didn't see anything but distortions of what I said in your post. Let's be constructive. What are your solutions?
Thank you for responding, oeidirsceoil. I was hoping we could talk again. I am a bit (happily) surprised that we could end up finding so much common ground when we simply treat each other in a civil manner. I completely agree that education should be offered but not compulsory, and was happy to see that you agree that our military and our money should be to defend ourselves (I wouldn't use it to enforce our political will, but only for defense), among other areas of agreement.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the results of this little experiment in civil disagreement and discourse could serve to show how we can all find common ground and make the country a better place - maybe not the ideal as each of us envisions it, but at least an improvement with which all of us can agree. And I guess that's democracy, right? But if we won't even talk to each other, we'll never find out where that common ground is.
I maintain that I have a very different worldview than you. But I respect you, in just two posts. You have shown me that you are a rational and thoughtful individual. You are an example of a conservative that I know is out there but that our media never lets me see. Thank you for your thoughtful debate.
What is capitalism based on? Capital. What is capital? It's wealth saved and accumulated, which can be invested in business and the factors of production. If all that we produce is consumed, we become stagnant, and eventually start to crumble. Or even worse, if we consume more than we produce, then we are eating into our capital, and the process is accelerated.
ReplyDeleteThen there are the people here upset about the rich who have more than they could ever "spend". Or who can't fathom why anyone who isn't rich wouldn't want the rich to be severely taxed. I believe these people do not have much of an idea about what Capitalism is, or how it and the economy functions. I can't summarize years of study here, but for goodness sake, please try to study up on the topic some.
Furthermore, historically the middle-class and lower classes in the USA are wealthier than their counterparts in other countries. Capitalism doesn't just benefit the "rich", it in fact benefits everybody. And most people who get rich do so from hard work and ingenuity, not from stealing and "taking" money from others. They usually get rich by doing a better job of providing for the wants of the masses.
I think it is telling that the more socialistic countries of Europe are the ones who are more stagnant, and the ones where there is much less upward mobility between the classes.
The only numbers I'm interested in come Nov. 2 - and there will be no debate about which "crowd" is bigger.
ReplyDeleteSee you lying libs at the polls...
Here are the numbers:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/30/rally-to-restore-sanity-attendance_n_776547.html
Sorry people, looks like America made a statement.
America is the GREATEST and STRONGEST Country in the World.
God Bless.
It does scare me when I think the angry frothing at the mouth crowd may actually be in control post Nov 2.
ReplyDeleteYou think things are messed up now wait until they try to dismantle the whole system by yanking out the keystone first.
By the way "what is capital?" I can tell you it isn't being spent or invested in this country any more. China has some shiny new factories paid for by corporate tax cuts.
People keep acting like a traditional capital model still works. Not at .50 cents an hour in Indonesia. Give them more tax breaks and they'll keep finding new places to move your job.
Europe stagnated to protect itself from US domination and now we need to do the same to protect us from a billion or so Chinese laborers.
Sad but true. Dang that hurts to admit.

Why are you trying to explain the facts to these idiots? They are lost. They have no idea what you're talking about. I've been trying for years. They are simple visceral people. Economics? Really? We need a new angle that doesn't require intelligence.
Economics. Spending- Revenue= deficit. The richest country in the world running a deficit for thirty years means not enough revenue. Revenue=taxes. 40% of this country hold .3% of the wealth. These are facts. Please, try to think.
ReplyDeletePeople are asking why ir is important, the size of the rally, I'll tell you. It is becuase for months Tea Partiers and their ass kissers Fox News have been spewing, "Look how many people showed up, that proves WE are the voice of tghe people and if you do not agree you are in denial".
ReplyDeleteIf stewarts rally is bigger, then that is a slap in the face of their "We're just like you" propganda.
