Congress: Unemployment Extension, Tier 5, 99ers & Tax Decisions

The unemployment extension and Tier 5 isn't available, and current unemployment extensions expire at the end of the month. However, Congress is more concerned with the extension of "Bush Tax Cuts" than the extension of unemployment benefits

Why?

Probably because all the wealthy people who donated to the campaigns of the lawmakers are concerned about the expiration of the Bush Tax Cuts, which would send tax revenues skyrocketing.

However, the new administration promised in the "Pledge to America" that the tax cuts would be extended to all - not just the middle class.

The Democrats were in a standoff, as the tax cuts are not first and foremost on their agenda. They don't think that the wealthy should get tax cuts, and that the middle class shouldn't be burdened with extra expenses in the midst of the current economy.

The extensions that expire at the end of the month could be extended before the Senate and Congress leave their lame duck sessions, if the Democrats agree to pay for it with decreased government spending.

The unemployment extension fight is about to get more interesting.

  1. Because the wealthy people like Big Daddy and business owners create jobs. We need the Bush tax cuts to help our business so we can employ more people. Say no to these free loading handouts! It's time for the lazy to get back to work and get off the daytime television. POUND THE PAVEMENT.

  3. they are not hand outs we do pay it for unemployment,or did you forget that, and until you walk in another's ones shoe don't be so eager to jump on the band wagon and say they are free loaders,we have cracked the pavement trying to get a job, are you hiring???

  4. I understand both sides as I myself was out of work for almost 2 years, then found employment only to work for about 6 good months to find myself unemployed for the last 5. I have sent 70-80 resumes to various agencies and employers only to hear from 3-5 of them and then to be told you are over-qualified. so if people need it then the government should give just as they continue to give to support wars, and banks, and automakers. question where are they getting all the money for this? the taxpayers and then they don't help the people who had a job (that's how you get unemployment, by working initially) so you do the math and ask yourself if you were losing everything what would you do. they say "you don't understand my situation until you have walked in my shoes"

  5. Free loading handouts? I hate being unemployed. I cannot find a job to save my life. College means nothing, military background means nothing, prior managment skills means nothing. We dont make anything in America! I have to dumb down my resume so much, I might as well put 'I'm a monkey that can breathe", just to get an interview delivering pizzas. The unemployed are not lazy!

  6. 500 resumes in 3 years.

I told my employer to restate their financial reports to the SEC, was fired.

Then blackballed. Then lied about and slandered. Lawsuits don't help; they hurt.

I get the "over qualified" to, "oh, you're that VP who reported your employer" to "umm. no."

I've lost my home, my 401k, my stock portfolio; tried getting into med school to try and do something to contribute back to society to no avail.

I don't have cable, don't watch tv; I work 5 hours a day trying to find a job, another 3 working for $8/hr to put food in my house so that I can stay off welfare.

What would you do, those who say quit being lazy, if your entire life went "poof" and everything went to hell.

Oh, and btw, Lehman, if you could exit bankruptcy soon, that'd help me out too. 2000 shares of LEHMQ stock that was bought for $50/share is now worth about $75.

  7. TRUMP FOR PRESIDENT 2012November 11, 2010 at 12:05 PM

  12. If Congress gives extensions to lower tiers they better give a new tier 5 for 99ers who still have no jobs or money and are losing everything daily because of this mess. They keep trying to convince everyone that all is going well and that there are jobs being created daily. But where and for who? The congress barely works and are always on a holiday it is no wonder our country is in such a state. They need to be held accountable and we citizens need to revolt up and demand them to stay there and do some real work for a change. No other business lets its employess have that much time off so why do we allow it in our country. It has gotten so out of hand. The holidays are stressful enough but with no jobs and no money to buy anything this year will be just horrible to all of us. There surely will be mass suicides as how much more can we take really. The President ought to be ashames that he is not doing more for all of us. He is turning into one of the rich jerks who is only out for themselves. Whatever happened to helping the middle class? We no longer have a middle class so I guess that is why they do nothing.

  13. With poverty the number one thing that leads to death of Americans we are not saving money by not extending UI. It will just create more foreclosures that lower you home value to, it leads to more homeless and poverty. The more that end up this way the more it costs us all. It's cheaper to pay UI, prevent it and it is a stimulus to provide that UI to help people. Congress is so short sighted they don't even get the cost of more on poverty with little hope is greater than paying UI to prevent it.

  14. I totally agree every comment here people who lost their job, In this country Politician is just a bullshitttt things, they think the Unemployment will not riot this country they think we are afraid, Why all tax payer ask them "why they don't cut off the Welfare, food stamp and Sect. 8 housing program, Why? cause they afraid of them cause them have nothing to loose and they going to turn America "Upside Down" they know they screw up for creating a monster in the country and there is no way back. Fuk the Government look at us working so hard rest of our life end up lost everything. If they not going to extend the Unemployment hope all the taxer thrown the Government down. They rather help the Trash Welfare not even pay a single dime in this country. Please Voice out to the Government that We're not afraid to thrown them off cause there are over 12 Million people lost their job.

  15. The same mentality that gassed millions and threw them in the ovens seems to prevail when it comes to FINANCIAL GENCIDE to the millions of innocent workers unable to even take care of their families basic health, food, shelter and spirit. Congress has killed the American Dream if they dont let the UI benefits extend. If they were starving would they give their money to governments, or fight a war. Of course not. This country is not what I fought for.On this Veterans Day, I cannot hang my head in shame, but rather ask my self is there a way to fix this mess???

  21. Extending UI benifits for hard working citizens in an economy like this, should not be a political issue at all. This is a no brainer. Q. Do we
help these ppl who paid this UI taxs ALL thier working life or see them go homeless? A. Of coarse we should, it makes more sense, no risk of crime if ppl get desparate not mention ITS THEIR MONEY, they deserve it. THE END

  22. Tax cuts bring jobs? Thats the dumbest statement ever made. They keep feeding that line to the public. Tax cuts just puts more money in their pockets.

  23. Listen here. They keep talking about extending the current people that are receiving unemployment benefits. A real extension is to add more weeks of benefits to the people that have reached the maximum weeks which is 99 weeks in states with the highest unemployment rate. All they're doing is keeping the existing program going. They aren't adding any weeks or extending benefits. Use your head people! This is how they try to confuse us and the media. It was the same trick they used back in the summer when they said they passed an extension. What a bunch of fools to believe them!

  25. Maybe the riots in these other countries should teach us something. We are the laughing stock of the world right now as the land of the oppressed and the home of the gutless. Maybe some stirring up is in order to get some attention...or did our soldiers die all these years for nothing?

  26. It is so easy to condemn the unemployed when you are employed. I am so disgusted with how not only our government has turned their backs on the victims of the depression but also the neighbors, business owners and just fellow citizens that seem to want to place the blame for the terrible situation so many people are in today on their shoulders as if they are the problem. Why not just shoot all the unemployed and get if over with if that is how you feel? What a sickening tragedy this is for our country when we can turn on our own kind.

Unemployed people do not have a life or a future like you,,so stop with all the accusations that they are lazy and watch tv all day long. If you have not been there,,, what gives you the right to make stupid statements about millions of Americans that have had their American dream taken away from them by Wall Street and greedy CEO's?

  28. I love the way Nancy Pelosi insinuated the unemployed voted the democrats out of congress as the reason the tier V will not be passed. Weren't the democrats in charge prior to the election when they did absolutely nothing to help the 99e'rs. Classic example of someone trying to pass the buck.

  29. To All the Haters of Tier 5 Extension: I lost my job after 16 years at the same company. Went to work one day, called us all in a meeting and told us we had lost our jobs. I have been out of work for a year and a half. I am now in a subbing position. I do not know from one day to the next if I will work. It's not complete security but its a start. Haters need to be quiet.. There is a difference between wanting to work and not wanting to work..

  31. Everyday resumes are sent out to go into the abyss of overloaded human resource teams. If lucky enough to be contacted, a series of personality/skills tests need to be taken often 30 - 45 minutes in length about the same time it takes to fill in many of the job applications. Then it is hurry up and wait to see if qualified. Then the phone interview and possibly actually meeting a person. After two or three months of this process and the final interview, you are one of the seven finalists that did not get the job. Not because you weren't qualified or a fit...it was because there are seven applicants just as qualified.
If you think I am sitting around eating chips watching Oprah...you are sadly mistaken.

  32. To the person that wrote at 819 this am, I applaud you!You are so very right. Instead of gutless anger from the safety of a computer screen, the people should direct that energy toward a solution. If they fought that hard for this, they would have it. You only pick up allys from fear not agreement. Those are the people that our so called leaders listen to. Look how the black people got their rights..was it from begging or action?

  34. I can not believe how stupid most of you posters are.
Seriously, you do not believe tax cuts create jobs? I am a "99er" and work an average of 18 hours a week making $8/ hour and I know tax cuts create jobs. You take away profits from a corporation by taxing them they will either leave the country or lay people off, these are FACTS folks.
The reason our economy looked good on the surface during Clinton's years is because they FED inflated the bubble to keep us afloat and looking good and guess what? That bubble popped in 2008.
I am amazed at how stupid Americans really are. Learn shit than come on here and talk, till then, go read.
