Could Unemployment Extension 2010 & Bush Tax Cut Compromise Hurt Obama?

Could the unemployment extension 2010 and the Bush Tax cut compromise hurt President Obama's quest to be re-elected in 2012? Although the unemployment extension will give him points with the long-term unemployed, getting the extensions passed involved breaking campaign promises.

President Obama vowed not to raise taxes on the middle class - those earning less than $250,000 per year - but he didn't vow to do the same for the wealthiest Americans. Obama wanted the tax cuts put into place by President Bush to expire for the wealthiest Americans.

However, the GOP and the Democratic government were at a stalemate. Would they increase taxes on the wealthy, and use that money to pay for the unemployment extension?

Such would make sense, but that's not going to happen.

And could actually bending on the tax cuts hurt Obama? After all, it's yet another broken campaign promise. However, if it was the only way to pass the unemployment extension, that's great news.

After all, the unemployment extension 2010 will extend the benefits for a full year! This means there's not going to be a need to worry a couple of months from now. Hopefully next year at this time, the job market will be better.

  4. Maybe because there are no jobs you moron!

  5. What i find interesting is that the rationale for the tax cuts for the rich is that they will create jobs. Their tax rate has been where it is and they havnt created any jobs in the last 3yrs. Why should anyone conclude that the rich will create any jobs because their tax rate stays where it is? They have engorged their wealth by eliminating jobs and pocketing the increased profits.

  7. would be really great to get a job. but no one wants to hire. not working is quite embarassing.never in my life have had to ask for assistance and its quite frustrating when you do. nothing like going down to the welfare office and looking around seeing Iraqi men asking for public assistance. grr. Love to have a job, and have those end of year perks, christmas goodies, gift cards from the boss dept managers and the whisper of bonuses since we worked so hard.

  8. why don't they just get jobs???? i'm willing to bet that you have a job. that you don't have to search and search for a job... i had a job. but the company moved out of state... needless to say there were about 500 people in a very very small town that lost jobs because of it. so you put 500 people all out fighting for the same job how do you think that everyone will get one? relocating isn't an option for everyone. i'm a single mother of 2 and can barely afford to take care of my bills on a day to day basis..... who are you to judge people like me that are going through a rough time? why don't you donate some of your money to people with out jobs?

  14. Some people are comfortable with unemployment living meagerly. I have been unemployed for 18 months. I send out an average of 10 resume's a week, and have only had a handful of interviews. I have been working as a Maintenance Manager for skilled trades for 12 yrs, so it is not like I am unskilled labor. But, I am over 40, and even though age discrimination is illegal companies can easily figure out your estimated age by your resume history and then just omit it from the list of candidates. So DO NOT say all people on unemployment are lazy!!!!!!!!!!

Come on all you employed people who think we are on a vacation.Switch with some of us.We are on a vacation right? Some people are just ignorant..

    ReplyDelete
  24. From what I have read, this is to reinstate the extensions, not to add another tier for those that have been on unemployment for 99 weeks already. (Answering the question from those that are asking if it will help the 99ers)

  25. To all you people talking smack about the unemployed why don't you focus your anger on people collecting welfare they are the lazy ones. Those of us that are unemployed who have to look for work just to collect a check and still not find a job its a very frusterating place to be. I've worked every day of my life since I was 18 and have never been unemployed before. I enjoy having a job and being able to support my self. There are many unemployed the are highly educated and still can't find work, if you have a job then consider yourself very lucky because some day you could be the one in need of alittle help and you better hope someone is there to help you in your time of need.

Obama will be hurt by the support of illegals and the dream act.If he supports it, I will not vote for him again.

  27. I would just like to say, I have been out of work for almost 2 years and it has been no vacation going out daily either cold calling or searching on the Internet for a job. You also must understand there are a lot of scams out there, I even almost got caught in one.
I even went back to school to better myself in the hopes that it would help.
So the person that told us all to "GET A JOB" I certainly hope you don't loose yours. I didn't think I would loose mine either.
I live in California in a county where the unemployment rate is over 12%.

    ReplyDelete
  28. It's easy for the employed to say GO GET A JOB.Hell you can't find a fast food job where i live. The little $230 they give is nothing to live on.Trust me if they were jobs we would have them.I seen where a carnival came to town and had 8 labor openings and 500 people showed up.Trust me a lot of them had college educations. So just be glad you are not in our shoes.

  29. For all the haters;
Do you not understand that if we fail as a country, that means we all fail, including YOU! It is time to SHUT UP and keep you nasty opinions behind closed doors (hopefuly in your bathroom when you are looking at yourself in the mirror) If one neeeds a helping hand extend it. Unemployment does not cost an individual a dime, it is an insurance just like health and life.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Don't let what anyone thinks of your situation upset you. They won't stop unemployment because the moment they do welfare will skyrocket. Those that are unemployed are just recently hired after being unemployed know what you are going through. Hundreds of people applying for the same job all the time. I have applied for endless jobs including McDonalds, no one wants to hire. Forget them then, I went to school to start my own business. No one will ever decide whether I have a job or not again. I hold my future now. Try that when the government fails.

  31. for the person who said to get a job.. im trying and there is nothing out there.. just cause you have a job dont think people that dont have one aint trying.. so just shut ur big mouth!

  32. I'm trying so hard to get a job! This extension will help me so much. It will also flow directly back in to the economy. Its just a win/win. I also don't understand why it is so easy to find funds for buying/bailing out large corporations, And, For funds for the base of our entire existence....... humans! We let the program run out of money and are completely ok with millions of people stressed out and put out of their houses.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I have yet to draw ANY extension. I have only drawn(and still am) what I paid in. My UI runs out the end of this month. I live in a small hick town, with NO jobs. Mcdonalds even turned me down. I am out there everyday looking. I drive 32 miles one way to the nearest city only to waste the 20 bucks in gas. I make 150 bucks a week on UI. I would love to have a job...as I am sinking fast. So for those thinking we are on "vacation" or just being "lazy"....please. If this is vacation...I want a refund! because its been hell the past 6 months. The only thing holding my house up is the fact my wife works 60 hours a week to make ends me. Its a shame people with jobs think so low of us. Just remember...your job could be next! I worked everyday for 5 years...never once called in. the company I worked for moved to india! with 1200 employees in a small town...its devastating. thats 1200 people after 1 job.

just because I am nice, I wont wish this on the person(s) who call us lazy. but I hope you keep what you said in mind when your out of work too.

  34. Wow, some of you folks out there are really pathetic !!! I am 48 yrs of age, lost my job June 23 of this year, first time ever that I have been out of work, needless to say got my 1st check in July and I will get my last check Dec 22nd. and that is only a partial payment. Try living of off $275 a week that unemployment gives you, nearly impossible. Better yet, in this so called great state of Florida you have to have money to survive, only the rich get richer and the poor get poorer here. Sad thing is I work in the medical field, can't find a job anywhere !!! Forget McDonalds or Burger King, to over qualified, any other place I go seems like they are only hiring from within, so whats a person to do??? So to all you fools out there that think i'm sitting back and enjoying my bonbons, you are sadly mistaken. I would love to have a job, so anyone out there looking for a medical assistant in Brevard Co. Fl. please let me know. PS only gonna get worse here when they close the Cape, then what, more troubles galore !!!

  35. I want a job SO BAD!!! Im a certified scrub tech and have not had a job doing that in 3 years! I have applied at Mcdonalds, Target, Walmart, Taco Bell, every single gas station around and many, many other places. I saw a past comment where someone put they send in 5 resumes a week, I put in 5 resumes a day!!! I don't know what the deal is! I NEED HELP!! I am withing a few days of losing my house. I have already sold most of my furniture and t.v. just to pay my rent!! Why don't you people leaving those nasty comments think about people like us that have been trying harder than we've ever tried before!!!! It is hard when over 100 people put in their resumes for one stinkin' job!!

  37. My husband can not find a job...he also can not take just any job. I am a teacher so I MUST work during the day. We have 3 kids that would ALL need daycare if we were to work. Sure he could get a McDonald's job but we would lose money after paying daycare. Even jobs that he is qualified for have been very hard to find! He can find a job, but he can't find a good job. I too may lose my job as a teacher if California doesn't get it together!

  40. Well according to a previous post I must be lazy, I have been drawing unemployment for a year now. Get a job, I am almost positive you must be joking; if your not then that just shows your ignorance of the job market. Therefore your ignorance entitles you to withdraw your opinions to the subject whenever it may occur. I am "NOT" going to work at McDonald's, I live 30 miles to the closest one; it would cost me money to work there. I believe I will stay on unemployment until I can find a job that will support me and my family, not a job that will put me in a worse position. I forgive you though, I am sure that you have nothing better to do with your pathetic life, other then getting on these websites and bashing people. I mean if you want to talk politics than I would suggest you go to college and consider taking some "American Government" classes, this might help you understand political issues a little better. I could even bet that I probably even hold more degree's then you, but your right I am lazy; that is why I went to college for six years! Your a joke, maybe you should try being a productive member of society, this may help your mental issues. Have a nice day, I know I most certainly will.

  41. I have been unemployed since Febuary. (Right before my Birthday yet.) I WAS making $875 a week AFTER taxes. I am now getting $224 a week from unemployment. They SAY 99 weeks total. Due to some situation at the UI office I am now on tier 3 at about 40 weeks. (And yes that is way too long as it is. I want a job.) There is absolutely no way I will get anywhere near 99 weeks. My point is that when people think unemployment runs for 99 weeks they need to realize that is at the most. Not everyone getting unemployment gets that. Second, IF I could find a job I would take it. I could REALLY use the extra $650 a week that I am NOT getting now.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I don't understand why ignorant people on say that people on unemployment are all lazy and just laying up on their asses drawing a check. How much money do you think we get? Not the 2500 a week I was making. I get less than 1/5 of that. A whopping 400 a week. That doesn't pay the house note. Doesn't pay the car note. Much less food and utilities. And 400 a week is too much money to be on any other government assistance like food stamps even for 3 people. I actually sat on my ass 8 hours a day for 15 years at my job. I don't get to do that now. And if you have any skill or college education many places won't hire you for being over qualified. So why don't you stuff your "just get a job and stop being lazy" up your ass

    ReplyDelete
  43. All those pompous-assed morons who say 'get a job' will be in the unemployment line next...what goes around, comes around. Don't think it can't happen to you! All of us were pretty secure in our jobs, and through no fault of our own, our jobs moved out of state or to another country. Come to Michigan you jack-wagons and see how quickly you CAN'T find a job! So THINK a bit before you spew your malicious NONSENSE.

  44. You know who these assholes on here saying get a job remind me of? That fat living high on the hog supervisor that let me go because of low numbers! You know what she told me when I asked how I was supposed to feed, clothe, and shelter my children on the little $233.00 a week that I now get from unemployment? It's not my problem my problem is the bottom line for this company. People like her and these assholes on here I hope you get what you deserve! As the other said what goes around comes around!Years ago there was a man standing on my lawn telling me he would take my house two months later he lost his job. Be careful what you say.

  46. well im a single mom of 47 years old and i send resume twice a week and its been hard and im bilingual but the people who are hireing have to make a choice between a 27 year old person and me they are going to choose the younger so it realy hard for us the mature people to get a job and with all respect i belive the presedent was the only one of thinking of us the single parents who now in holiday we could get our kids something have bless dicember

  47. When people lose interest or ability to take care of themselves do they really still have the same rights as those who do. It would seem that if a person is fed, sheltered and clothed by the government they have become a ward of the state and no longer a person of majority. These are issues that need to be discussed.

  48. I worked for the same company for over 30 years and was let go, I now make $269 a week after taxes,WOW let me go out and buy a new car and a new house and a fur oat and diamond rings cause I'm sure getting rich off the unemployment I'm getting for only a few more months. originally my benefits were to run out in Feb. or march but then when the Rep balked at extending benefits my benefits were going to run out this week. I'm over 50 too so I'm not exactly what most companies are looking for. Those of you who say we are lazy you wanna trade places with us?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Give me a job any day !!! But theres nothing out there...Yeah Extension !!!! GOOOO OBAMA !!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. LOL (@ Yeah Extension!!!! GOOOO OBAMA). For the person who mentioned that people are just lazy and that he/she is hiring...how much are you paying? Are you fairly advertising or just full of it? Anyway, unemployment is not welfare, people have worked hard and should be able to receive an income during this economic downturn. I for one am blessed to have a great paying job, and have companies constantly emailing and calling me to ask if I need a job! My mom on the other hand hasn't had it so easy. She was laid off last yr and has been actively looking and seeking employment. In the meantime, she has decided to go back to school. The problem is that there are soooo many people without jobs (highest % of people with degress since the 70's) and where there use to be 10-15 applicants for a position is now well in the 100's. If you have a job, be grateful because nothing is 100% promising in this world.

  51. I'm from the Midwest, with one of the highest rates of unemployment, and my extended benefits ended on August 2010. And as a 99er if a tier 5 were included in this next bill for the jobless, would be lifeline for me and the other millions in this same predicament. I will soon be losing my apartment and matters would be even worst, were it not for SNAP, which allows me to buy food each month. So many people who have jobs are cynical towards the unemployed; little do they know how terrible this economy really is. And to make things even more confusing, economist and pundits keep spinning the idea that the "worst" is behind us, and truly my worst is just beginning. I have two folders full of application summaries and have gotten no replies from any of the companies. I would rather have a full time job then to be in a food line or at the will of our elected government beaurcrats, but it is what it is. I hope "these" heartless representatives on both sides of the isle have a nice Christmas Season, mine will no doubt be miserable...I pray God's mercy on us 99er's and soon to be others. Maybe we'll have more than lump of coal in our stocking this Christmas??

  52. Is the person above suggesting that those who are on unemployment should not have a say in politics since they are not "a person of majority"? If so, I think they are wrong. Such a view is definately grounds that will lead to civil unrest. that opinion is not at all useful or productive. Perhaps that person has an answer that will give us all jobs and make us persons of majority again.

    ReplyDelete
  53. No Tier 5. I was just listening to cnn and they were saying this exstention is not for those over 99 weeks. Mr. Obama said he is concerned only with those people who would be dropping off the payroll after 26 weeks. He said that he is concerned for those people who would be loosing their homes if they loose their benefits. So the 99ers who have already lost everything INCLUDING THEIR HOME dont matter. If your a 99er and you have children with life threatning illnesses and you need meds then you should give your children up to a foster care program. If your a senior citizen and you need life supporting meds well you might want to get in touch with next of kin because you will not get your meds. The government just threw millions of 99ers under the bus. WE DO NOT MATTER!!

  54. to the person who said that the unemployed are lazy... Wow you must really be out of touch with reality! I am 35 years old and have been working since i was 19. I have been unemployed for 6 months now and there are no jobs right now. NO WAY IN HELL WILL I ACCEPT BEING CALLED "LAZY"! You represent what i truly hate in this country- someone that is out of touch and unfeeling of someone else's struggles. I made over $1,000 a week and to collect $400 a week from unemployment is a huge change for me. I would love a job right now as would millions of others that are going through the same thing. Dont be so quick to paste your nasty little comments, you could be out of work tomorrow and what would you do? You would be thankful for this extension....

  55. In Iowa, we have the 7th lowest unemployment rate in the US. There are TONS of jobs each day posted on careerlink.com. The problem is most those jobs are unskilled and pay anywhere from $7.25 to $10.00 an hour, aren't full time, have no benefits, or are skilled in areas I am not (i.e. nursing, banking, etc...) I know in Iowa, you are not required to accept a job unless it's a % of what your highest quarterly earnings were. So, even if I was offered a $10 an hour job I could turn it down. Let me tell you, for those educated and with lots of experience in a specialized field, those jobs are scarce! Even jobs I applied for, I got rejects saying I there were more qualified candidates they were pursuing. In most cases, I highly doubt that. Why hire me though when they can hire someone newly graduated with low income expectations. I even have to have my fingerprints on file at the FBI for my job...so I can even pass every background check required by any employer for any job! Unfortunately, I make $394 on UI which is the max you can get with 1 child you claim (I have 2, but the dad claims one each year so I don't get any benefits for him even though he lives with me) So, it's far cry from what I was making weekly. So, you figure that's a whopping $1300 a month for me and 2 kids to pay a mortgage (which I am luckier than most that its only $550 a month since I bought it when I was 20!), a car payment, utilities, and food. And, seeming I was the high earner at divorce time, my child support for 2 kids is only $300 a month..and helps now..but I'm not getting rich off that either. Nothing more fun than sitting home all day with kids in school watching Jerry Springer and eating bon bons. Yes, I am on a vacation, I LOVE the stress of wondering how to pay bills each month and if I will find a job before my unemployment ends! Oh course, at that point a $10 an hour job is better than no job and no $!

  56. People are amazing...Get a job? Have you tried to get a job oh no wait you have a job already. I am a single mom in my early 30's who lost a job because my numbers were low in sales...making (65,000per yr)now that company is barely alive because no one is making their numbers because there isn't any money anywhere for anyone to spend. I put in at least 5 resumes a day even willing to work and the lowest paying job. It is not easy being at home on unemployment! I would much rather work so before you spat out your nasty comments take a look around and just be thankgful you can still put a roof over your head! I don't wish this on my worst enemy but remember KARMA works in bad ways too!

  57. The week after I was laid off from my position, I went to school and became a 911 officer certified by the state in which I live. I paid for this school out of pocket in which case nearly lost my unemployment benefits as a result. I had to prove that school had not intruded on my ability to be actively seeking work.

I have cut back so severely on my lifestyle (never lived beyond my means.) Household meals consist of pasta, ramen noodles, homemade soup from leftovers. We are down to one car a 93 mercury topaz (which I pray and thank God for everyday). I have only kept Internet access because you can only apply for jobs via the internet.
I have gone on interviews. I have always been a hard working American with a strong work ethic.
I am beat out by someone who has degree, or is multi lingual or simply more apt than I.
When I am not looking for work I also volunteer.

The 911 certificate I earned is worthless since no state or municipalities are hiring due to the economy. You wanna call me lazy? You couldn't walk in my shoes for a minute. You are a foolish, sad person. May this never happen to anyone you care for, they may not be a strong as the rest of us and you may just eat those dispicable words you spew
