POLITICS: Unemployment Extension 2010 Benefits Bill Blocked, 99ers & Tier 5 Woes

The 2010 unemployment extension benefits bill was blocked, and so far the unemployment extension has not been passed. However, there's indications that the Republicans and Democrats will be able to come to a consensus on the Bush era tax cuts, and so the unemployment extension should be the next thing on the agenda.

If the benefits are not extended and soon, there will be massive lapses in benefits, amid the holiday season. This is not good news.

In the Senate, a bill was blocked yesterday even though Senator Barbara Boxer read letters from unemployed constituents.  The bill would have had to head back to the House, but the Senate hurdle is far greater.

The benefits bill would have extended unemployment for one year.  It would not have added a 5th tier of benefits for the "99ers", or those who have been out of work for 99 weeks or more.

The job market doesn't show any signs of uptick.  The national unemployment rate went up during the month of November to a seasonally adjusted 9.8% - flirting with double digit unemployments.

The unemployed will keep their eyes trained on the unemployment extension 2010 and its passage. Hopefully the lame duck session will not pass by without an extension of benefits.

  1. 99ers need help also!!!! Why can't the extension just automatically include the 99ers? We are hurting bad and lost almost everything. Please show sometype of mercy!!!!

  2. This is pitiful, stop playing games and pass a tier 5, we have to eat too!!! 8 more days til I am evicted, no jobs calling, and am up all night long applying for jobs on line and no one never calls back. I am tired of eating peanut butter with no bread, have a heart, suppose it was your mother?

  5. They vote to keep earmarks so they get the pork waste spending they each want. Yet tell unemployed no help for you. This congress continues to show most Americans all they care about is their interests not Americas. They ignore helping unemployed but are just find sending 90 billion this year in foreign aid. I thought they where worried about deficits? How come I never hear any of them say how do we pay for foreign aid? Yet question how do we pay for aid to unemployed who paid taxes and expect help before other countries get a dime. Congress needs to stop being hypocrites in saying one thing and actions show another. If not expect in 2 years the rest of them gone.

  6. Also we are not saving money buy not extending unemployment until things get better then 1 job for every 5 looking. All we do is push more into foreclosure, more homeless and more into poverty. When we let that happen it ends up costing more in money and lives then paying UI to prevent it. We are such a stupid country never understanding the real cost and choose the most costly way every time. Why are we fighting wars spending over a trillion $'s to keep us safe and save lives. Yet we cut off unemployed and grow poverty which takes lives. We save more lives not fighting these wars and preventing poverty here. Again we are so stupid. Did we learn nothing from Vietnam? Afgan war same thing we cannot win. They live there and soon as we leave all the time and money we spent will be wasted.

These people cause the system to crash and now they put all the pain on the people who didnt ask to lose their job. i hate repubs they are all racist idiots who want to hurt usa because we have a black prez.

  10. I am a 46 year old man who has been unemployed since June of 2009. My benefits are going to expire at Christmas. I have 5 children and have just found out my wife is about to lose her job also. I will lose the house I have raised my children in and lived in since 1987. I would absolutely take any job that helps me just get by and I have been able to secure only one interview in the past six months. I am online everyday looking for jobs. I have a BS in Business Administration and have also worked as a computer programmer. I was a Republican that recently switched to Democrat in disgust of the lack of support decent people and families receive from the Republican agenda. Please prove me wrong and have a heart for the hard working American people and extend our benefits. Our economy will completely die if you cannot help your own people but continue throwing away billions to foreign countries that don't deserve it. PLEASE HELP US!!!

I truly feel they dont care about anything but for themselves, and the ones that pretend to care are only hoping someone falls for it and votes them in again, All they care about is what they need and when something is left over we get some crumbs maybe.

  14. What about the 99er's... I'm not one yet but I could be real soon if I don't get a job and right now, I'm not even getting bites. I have applied for hundreds of jobs since I lost my job in October 2008 and I even went back to school and got a certification in the medical field and still no calls. Don't forget about the people who have exhausted their benefits and still need money to survive. We need a 5th tier, we need more time to find a job... because it just isn't happening.

  16. The real reason they do not want a tier 5 extension is because they do not want the real unemployment rate publicized. They know the real unemployment rate is well above the fake 9.8 %. How dare the labor department quote such huge lies. Just think, if they pass an extension for a year like they are proposing, this will take the people currently on unemployment well beyond 99 weeks. All of the Democrats including Obama is full of it. We need help more than anyone. Our cries are falling on deaf ears.

    ReplyDelete
  17. It would be great if they would give the 99ers a few extra weeks at least. We have been living without ANY income now for months now.
By the way, every single one of the 2 million people that are collecting unemployment today, will also be 99ers at some point (with no more federal help, PERIOD!) if jobs are not created soon.

Businesses might get more worried. So if your on tier 5.. pray to god.

  19. When dems tell republicans we cannot agree to use stimulus money left or make other cuts to pay for more UI what that tell us? Dems think just about everything else is more important then helping the unemployed. I think both sides are stupid not helping unemployed who paid for that help with taxes they paid all their lives. Republicans have said all a lot we will vote for it just show us how it's paid for? So why do Dems refuse to cut things not more important They must think giving 90 billion in foreign aid is more important then aid to Americans. They all show us they have f'd up priorities. Including fighting wars that will end up killing more Americans then it saves. We where told we never get into another Vietnam. Well we are in Afgan war and they once again have our soldiers getting shot at with no war to win. At same time let unemployed go with no help, 4 out of 5 no jobs for them. Let poverty increase which ends up killing more Americans and costing more then helping unemployed. We have some very stupid leaders.

  20. I'm 60 and have been out of work since June 2008. My husband has been out of work since April 2009. We are both out of benefits. We have gone thru all our retirement and savings. We will lose our home and everything we have worked for all our live. We are not lazy and look for jobs everyday. No Christmas for our grandchildren. I bet the politicians will have a great holiday. We need tier V now.

The atmosphere in my home is consistant stress, even my 13 year old is not sleeping wondering when/if we'll lose our house - the house she has grown up in. I agree with those that state the government doesn't want the "real" unemployment % published. 99r's need a nation that is there for them - not dooling out to other countries! We need TIER 5 NOW!

  24. Its great that 70,000 new jobs will be created, but I'm a 99er who is over the age of 58 I can't wait that long for them to come about. How will I eat, where will I live while I wait for them? My saving have been been used to pay for a roof over my families head, I'm not getting rich by any means collecting, but it helps to feed my family and gives us a place to live. I'm not lazy, I'm far from it I scour the newspapers that neighbors are kind enough to give me, I go door to door, being over 58 no one wants me. They say your over qualified, I know that for every application they give there is only 1 job yet there are 100 people hoping for it. I voted Dem in this election hoping someone would be watching out for us the little people but greed is rampant in Congress, all the Repubs watch for is themselves and their rich friends. So sad what this once great country has come to, leaving its own to beg for help.

  25. I make a good living. I have a job. I make over $250,000 a year. I am lucky. I insist you raise my taxes and help the people that allowed me the opportunities to live the American Dream. I was ashamed of my country when we invaded a sovereign nation without provocation, but denying my fellow citizens and neighbors the sacred promise that,"if you pay into the system the system will take care of you", has been bastardized by the elitists in Congress and again I am ashamed and embarrassed and I weep for what this county has become.

  32. ** How do you pay for tax cuts for the wealthy ?

    1. First attempt : threatening Social Security and Medicare Cut through the deficit panel.

    2. Second attempt : holding the desperate Hostage, say, the Ransom.
How long will it take for Obama to learn that we think compromise is a synonym for unconditional surrender, or another Bush-era?

** The deal based on the outright lies and supportive Dead Media will lead to another Bush-era & irreversible RECESSION.

    1. The reps uses the recession as an excuse for tax cuts for the wealthy.

THIS IS A MIDDLE CLASS RECESSION.

    2. The Republican Senate minority leader has been arguing that the outcome of the midterm elections confers a mandate on Congress to extend the Bush-era tax cuts.
"There's bipartisan opposition to raising taxes on anyone at this time."

(a). Only 34 percent of Americans believe that tax cuts ought to be extended for those households making more than $250000 a year, according to a new CNN poll.

(b). A recent CBS News poll indicated that Only 26 percent indicated they support extending the tax cuts for all Americans regardless of income level

(c). In the AP-CNBC poll, 34 percent favor extending the tax cuts for all Americans.

(d). A recent Gallup poll found 40 percent favor maintaining the Bush-era tax cuts for all Americans.

    3. The reps road the waves of deficit reduction just 2 months ago.

Now, 2 months later they are set to increase the deficit and increase the governments debt ceiling just so they can give themselves and their rich pals more money.
This isn't what Americans voted for.

    4. Tax cut for small businesses.

A small business bill was blocked for weeks by a republican filibuster in the Senate.

    5. Tax cut for job creation.

(a). There is no evidence that the tax cuts created even a single job.
Back when Bush was pushing his tax cut packages through Congress in 2001 and 2003, supporters said the cuts (which weren't balanced with spending reductions) would initiate an era in which the American economy would grow so robustly the nation would be running a surplus of more than $5 trillion at the scheduled expiration date. U.S. now runs a deficit of about $1.3 trillion.
In fact, the available evidence is the exact opposite:
Former President Bill Clinton left a record surplus and created 20 million jobs, despite the warning of potential economic disaster over tax increase for the wealthiest.

(b). Your Waterloo = our windfall.
Even when the economy was on the cusp of entire collapse just like Lehman Brothers ahead of the roll-out of stimulus package, it was held hostage by Audacity of Nope, and the time was running out.
Power first then said : Nope ! How do we pay for it ?, Just let it go under exactly like Lehman Brothers.

    6. The GOP along with Big Business bought this past midterm election.
The structure that the last champion is authorized to pick the next match winner .

The ruling that allowed Corporate money to back Political Candidates destroyed the very fabric of the Elections and Americans are paying dearly for it.
The incessant barrage of negative campaign ads drove most Americans towards something they knew nothing about, the Republican/Corporate take-over of the US. Millions upon millions were spent to defeat certain Democrats.

  36. The unemployment situation does not apply to me at this time. However, my heart goes out to those who have truly been looking for work and can't find it. I know people personally who have not been looking for any work and just keep sitting back collecting free money and following the news hoping for another Tier so they can collect more free money (these are people who are not responsible of taking care of an entire household). Republicans seem to imply that those people are probably messing it up for those of you who have families and are really trying to seek work and sending out resumes and going on interviews but keep getting rejected and need money for your families. I hope they pass the Tier 5 because the last thing I want to hear about is children being without!!!

  38. I wonder what percentage of 99ers are over 50. I am 58 and have been jobless for 31 months. Even though I have applied for positions making 25% of my previous income but have been told I am over qualified. Older workers have been discriminated against long before the current economic crisis. Age Discrimination laws created to protect us are not policed or enforced. I filed an age claim with EEOC and 10 months later was told that they were too busy to take my case. Being jobless, I could not afford the $10.000 minimum retainer
required by the attorneys. My government has failed to protect me and millions of other 99ers that are over 50. They rather spend my tax contributions to help other countries. Can I get my money back?!?!

EXTEND BENEFITS TO 99ERS OVER 50 YEARS OF AGE OR PROTECT US FROM AGE DISCRIMINATION!!!

I've been paying taxes for 41 years and this is what I get??? I can receive my pension and social security in just 4 years but by then I will have lost all I've worked for and be homeless.

    God help us all,

Damn this is becoming a third world country. Stupid politicians pass the dam bill and a tier 5 the money going right back to the goverment any way or would you rather have someone risk their freedom cause they have to feed their family, a person that never committed a crime in their life just to feed their family.

  42. Tier 5 is the biggest group that is out there and is growing everyday. It astounds me that the President himself is or seems to be so unaware about what is going on out there. I am a 99er- running out to Unemployment benefits in April 2010. I can easily tell you that has been the worst year of my life. I have run the gamut with all of it. My house is in foreclosure, I literally don't have money for even the smallest of things. My wife and I experience stress all the time over every part of our life. What I don't understand is how the rich just keep reaping all the benefits from the government. We need TIER 5! Why don't they listen to the masses of the unemployed that are out there in this country. This country is becoming a country of "haves" and "have nots" and the "have nots" grow every day. It is really sad that our voices are not heard, and even more so than that...when they are heard,,,they are ignored by the government that is supposed to be elected by the people and for the people. These are the saddest days for Americans that have always worked hard-for everything we have and now we are truly- a dying breed. For all the other 99ers out there like me...you know as well as I do....It is a LONG, SLOW, PAINFUL DEATH..and our own Government dangles the lifeline in our faces, only to pull it away and watch us die. I hope all the SELFISH REPUBLICANS enjoy their Christmas Holiday- the rest of us don't have a Holiday to Celebrate!!!!

  43. Everyone is blaming one party or the other. This is NOT a party problem, this is country-wide problem. Our elected officials in Washington forget us until they want our votes. I am a 99er, lost my benefits in April 2010. I wrote to my Congressman and Senator, was told that they were sorry, but no tier V. If the Congress decided to pass a tier V, this country would fall apart. The news media does no stories about the 99ers anymore (out of sight, out of mind). For those who wish for an extension, I hope that there will be one, but it will not be for us, the 99ers. We are the forgotten, by the media and Congress.

    ReplyDelete
  44. These people are insane. How long do you extend it for?? You honestly mean to tell me that you need 3 years to find a job, any job? You people make me sick. Get off your asses and find a job, everyone in this country that actually puts in a work week is sick of carrying you along. It has been scientifically proven that when unemployment is extended, filings for unemployment go up. How long can you keep giving someone something before they get up and take care of themselves. Truely repulsive all of you are!!

  45. We, the 99'ers are the MOST drastically affected!!
We need help ASAP, we have mortgage to pay utilities, children to feed...
I am so upset at how this freaking people who run The USA only care for the middle class & rich people and other countries.Worry about us, we are the ones living here.

Poor people are hurting badly too, or worst!
I have been unemployed since 2008 and I have college degrees, certifications etc, etc...and I went to school over a year, NON-stop applying everywhere, interviewed every where and this is the day that I haven't gotten a job. We, the Americans are being ignored, I mean I have been paying my taxes since I was 14 yrs old and I am more than convinced that this system is strewed...We need help thats all we are asking, we are working Americans with children, that need to get help!! It is very devastating to hear my kids say mommy we want this and that for Christmas, and I just cant afford to buy them anything because all I have to from my savings to pay for bills without working. It's a very tough situation, it's been the worst year of my entire life.

Since they won't even consider adding to our problems. We are the ones that are needing unemployment just like everyone else. How is it fair for the other unemployed Americans who get to keep receiving unemplyment and us who aren't even aloud to get anymore? I am thinking about refiling with the Texas Workforce Commission and see if I am able to be eligible to receive new benefits. Email the white house not the Senate about you are a 99er and unemployment needs to be fair across the board.

  55. In view of the ongoing issues surrounding long term unemployment and now the extension of long term taxes for the rich, I am so very sorry that I voted for President Obama.
The President gets on his throne stating that he does not want the long term unemployed to be held hostage to the Republican politics. The President approves of 13 weeks of unemployment (not to include the present 99ers) and approves of the long term tax cuts for the rich up to at least 2 years. Now, how on earth does this make any sense and why does the President think that this is showing compassion to the middle to lower class or helping the economy?
If the President, which I believe wants to do the right thing, would just get some backbone and do what’s right, he would issue an Executive Order (UNEMPLOYMENT IS AN EMERGENCY!) and allow all of those who are unemployed since the crisis began and who are looking for work qualify for ongoing unemployment benefits for at least a year. If the President is going to allow tax breaks for the rich up to at least 2 years, shouldn’t the unemployed and looking for work be entitled to unemployment benefits for just as long as the rich get their tax break? This is such a simple solution BUT I believe the bottom line is that no one wants to face the reality of the REAL numbers in terms of the unemployed. Believe me, it is not 9.8% but closer to 15-20%. If Congress argues that this type of unemployment package would cost too much well too bad! I believe it equals out to comparison to the monies not saved by giving the rich their tax breaks!

I live in the south and I happen to love fried potatoe cakes, aka potatoe pancakes, so what do you find so funny about it? so are you calling me white trash also?

Maybe you are one of those people that Kathy woman was talking about. Maybe you need to get up off your fat lazy ass and look for a job.

  61. Kim from Oregon is right, the unemployment numbers are much higher. What most people don't realize is that if you have run out of unemployment and still unemployed you are not counted in the equasion. The only people counted in the equasion are those getting unemployment. The percentages are much higher.

The Grinch this Christmas is alive and working hard to hurt as many as they can. Shame on you Republicans, just remember there will another election sooner than you want and if you screw this up, the Democrats will come back as a majority with a vengence.

  63. I have been watching the Presidential News Conference held today at 11:22 AM PST. The President still fails to address the 99ers. He states that he has kept us from heading into a recession which “could have been 15-20% unemployment” but in reality, the unemployment rate is exactly 15-20% if you counted the 99ers who STILL ARE NOT GETTING ANY BENEFITS!!! These political games of both the parties are absolutely ridiculous.

  66. What a shame! no T5?? I have been without benefits now for 5 months. Losing everything! Exhausted all my savings, selling small things on eBay just to keep my internet up and running so I can continue to apply for jobs! Can drive my car because I had to cancel my car insurance. No health care, A1 Credit down the tubes.

I am 54 years old, with a Masters Degree who has been applying for jobs at McDonald's and still can not get a job.

My daughter calls me every day just to make sure I haven't committed suicide. She is 21 years old and has a small P/T job and sends me $25.00 a week out of her $135.00 a week paycheck so I can pay my electric bill.

I AM SO TIRED OF PEOPLE TELLING US TO STOP CRYING AND GET A JOB! Ok, at this point I'll come and clean your toilets just so I can get some of my self dignity back!

Washington runs to the rescue of the crooks who put us into this situation, but won't rescue the Americans who became victims of Wall Street's greedy??

Now they tell us 99er's to go back to school and retrain?? For what?? Who's going to pay for it and are they going to stop the age discrimination problem that plagues the people over 50 who are trying to find work and apply but get turned down?

So much for elected officials who are supposed to look out for our best interest. They are only concerned about how to make the rich richer! Many of them have never experienced what it is like to not have money, but yet they call themselves "AMERICANS" !!!

  69. Some of you are stupid and nasty people. We really don't want to hear from you. Jethro is a total waste of space, as well as Kathy. You'd better watch out or you may get coal in your stockings. That would be a hoot!! Now, get off and let the adults talk.
