Elizabeth Smart Case - Smart Storms Out of Trial (UPDATE)

Elizabeth Smart's case has been on the minds of many, ever since the Utah teen was found months after having been abducted at knifepoint. Smart was forced to live as the polygamous wife of Brian David Mitchell, who is currently undergoing trial.

Wanda Barzee, Mitchell's ex-wife was married to the man during the time Smart was in captivity. She, too, faced jail time for her involvement, and actually gave testimony against her ex husband.

Mitchell has acted odd during the entire ordeal, even going as far as to sing in the courtroom, which caused him to have to be excused from the room several times.

However, today it was Elizabeth Smart herself who stormed out of the trial. This happened as a defense witness, a psychiatrist, testified that the reason that Mitchell raped Smart repeatedly was to impregnate her.

The defense is trying to claim that Mitchell is mentally ill, and therefore can't be held criminally responsible for what happened.

Smart has come to the States from a mission trip in Paris in order to take part in the trial.

Elizabeth Smart Case & Brian David Mitchell's trial are underway.   Elizabeth Smart was just 14 when she was abducted from her Utah home by knifepoint.  She was taken from the bed that she shared with her young sister.  Elizabeth Smart was then held in captivity by Brian David Mitchell, where she claimed she was held as his wife and was raped on a daily basis, many days multiple times. This lasted for 9 months, and then she was discovered. 


The trial for Brian David Mitchell has been a long time coming.  Elizabeth Smart, who is working as a missionary in France came back to testify, and shared her account of what she called was a "realistic nightmare." 


The trial doesn't center on whether or not Brian David Mitchell did the things he is accused of doing.  The trial centers on whether or not Brian David Mitchell was insane.  Understanding his mind is going to be difficult for the jury.

Elizabeth Smart Case [UPDATE]

Elizabeth Smart case Update is available. The Elizabeth Smart Case has been a big scandal ever since Smart was abducted. It was one of those missing persons cases that had a happy ending of sorts when Smart was discovered - or just walked out in to public with her captor.

Smart was held captive for nine months, raped every day of her captivity. She was brainwashed and lived as her captor's wife.

Her captivity was far less time than that of Jaycee Dugard - who spent almost two decades with her captor, bearing two daughters with him.

Elizabeth Smart was 14 in 2002 when the abduction took place. She was taken from the bed she shared with her sister, who pretended to be asleep as her sister was abducted.

Smart offered her testimony, describing the ordeal as "indescribable fear" and saying that she thought she was having a realistic nightmare.

Her captor did handyman work for the family.

Elizabeth Smart is now a missionary in France, but returned to give her testimony in this case.
