2010 Unemployment Extension and Unemployment Rates Update

The 2010 unemployment extension situation and the unemployment extension 2010 failure to pass has brought on a lot of discussion over unemployment rates.  After all, the true situation is important to assess if  improvements are going to be made in the country.  Although Senators "think" that unemployment extension is important - their actions speak louder than words.

The unemployed are being used as a political pawn.  The futures of many Americans are nothing more than a political agenda.

Just how bad is the situation? If you aren't familiar with the extension or just found this post looking through blogs, you might realize that there are a lot of heated comments.  This just tells you that it's a polarizing topic. However, what are the unemployment rates?

It's important to know how the unemployment extensions work.  For instance, there are four tiers of emergency benefits which recently expired on June 2, 2010.  The first two tiers are available to everyone, and the second tiers are only available to those in the states hardest hit by unemployment. Those in the middle of one of those four tiers get to complete that tier - but don't continue on to get benefits.

As of May 2010, here are the highest unemployment rates:

Nevada - 14%
Michigan - 13.6%
California - 12.4%
Rhode Island - 12.3%
Florida - 11.7%
Mississippi - 11.4%
South Carolina - 11%

The lowest unemployment rate is in Nebraska, and that is a rate of 4.9%.

A state by state breakdown of unemployment rates can be found here.

So as you can see there are numerous states with double-digit unemployment rates. The double-digit unemployment rate are indicative of just how bad the unemployment situation is and just how bad the country needs an unemployment benefits extension bill.

Senator Olympia Snowe wants to pass the measure as a standalone bill, or at least bring talks of such a deal to the Senate floor.  Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid doesn't want to do that, and urges Snowe to try to help end a standoff between Senate Democrats and Republicans.

Hopefully tomorrow will bring more positive information about an unemployment extension.  Until then, jobless individuals need to unite and make their needs known.

  2. This country needs to BEGIN worrying about its own and not the welfare of other countries if we are ever going to get back on track. I am sick and tired of the USA being the crutch for every other poor country in this world. We have enough poor and non-working people in this country since the great depression. Hey Congress, get off your ass and help the people of this country 1st!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. In my life I have seen the government do some crazy things, but never create a situation where it withdraws support for millions of men, women, and children during a depression. Support these people thought they had, but discovered they did not because of a political stunt.

  9. Actually Snowe has a good idea for a change. The unemployment bill should have been a standalone bill from the beginning. The took care of doctors by voting on the 22% medicare cut, taking it out of the bill to pass it on it's own. Thats right take care of the doctors, but scrw the unemployed! Pass a stand alone bill now!

  10. I'm a little disturbed by the fact that the new standalone bill being pushed by Stabenow is excluding tier V benefits. I live in S.C.(#7) and have been seeking employment since I was laid off.I only hope everyone stays as galvanized towards getting help for the 99ers if they decide to leave us out in the cold while attempting to pacify everyone else. They need to continue benefits for ALL until unemployment percentages go down.

  11. I have been unemployed for 6 months. i would like to make the point that no mater what tier or in my case my 26 weeks of state unemployment is used up. anyone unemployed as of 6 months is not recieving any benifits. all others longer unemployed t 1-2-3-4-5 or whatever are also cut off until this passes. there are a lot more affected than the numbers i have seen listed. all i know is its not fun! every morning i go out and stop at places! leads given to me by freinds saying there gonna add a few here or there.. every morning i go out and im lucky if one out of ten will even let me fill out an aplication, anything on line has been a complete waist of time!!! i have worked 25 years... im in good shap, shart and will do almost anything. i have never gone without a job ever and im starting to lose my mind! already lost everything almost and i do not wish this on anyone! this government is spending us into a great depression! the massive tax dollars they recieve are gone! and then some. i have watched counless company's pack up there crap and lock the doors. i worked for a small company that had to cut employee's to stay under the cap that mandated they cary insurance for all! THANKS OBOMA! MY JOB HAS BEEN FILLED WITH FAMILY MEMBERS OF THE OWNERS OF THIS COMPANY WHO LOST THERE JOBS SOMEWHERE ELSE. THE ONLY WAY TO FIND WORK SEEMS TO BE TO KNOW SOMONE. I DONT KNOW WHAT WE ARE GOING TO DO! I FEAR FOR OUR CHILDREN.

I spoke with Senator Snowes office and was told that she had changed her mind about the bill and would bring a standalone bill to the floor later this week(some hope for us) we need for senator Reid to stop playing politics and get this done.
If something is not done we will continue home in npvember.

  15. It is time for a clean sweep in Congress. If you recognize the name, pull the other lever, punch another chad, or whatever you have to do to rid us of every incumbent regardless of party affiliation. People are out of work because the jobs don't exist. If Senator Hatch wants me to piss in a cup that's ok, but then all those in Congress should be forced to do the same or lose their seats/income.

  17. CAll your US Senators LOCAL OFFICE numbers for your area. I just called the DC number for John Cornyn and got a pompous smart ass on the phone. Then I called the US office where the workers don't argue policy with you, they must take your calls and pass the information on.

WRITE DOWN WHAT THEY SAY AND START POSTING A PLAY BY PLAY. Today the Senate is focusing on Supreme Court nominations.

Is anyone else here waiting for an extension to feed your children???

  18. None of them should be taking yet another week off while millions of Americans can't even put food on their tables, or keep their roof over their heads. How can they celebrate their Independence Day knowing that there are people out there that THEY are putting out of their homes and taking food away from their children. Shame on all of you senators!!! I know that some of you aren't up for reelection this coming November, but don't worry...five years from now I'm still going to remember what you put me and my family thru and I will be sure to vote you out!!!

  19. I think it's strange that when you google news unemployment extension, that you get these news media blogs that you've never heard of. Google News anything else and it's the Wall Street Journal, LA Times, CBS News, CNN...what is Associated Content and Politics and World News? I guess this issue isn't good enough for the "real" news. Ironically this is about ads.

I would never vote for another Republican.
And isn't it funny how the EMPLOYED become the experts on the unemployed. We're all "working the system." "It's gotta end sometime." Well you bring back the jobs and that's when it will end. Walk a mile in our shoes.

So it is NOT true that those in tier pasts the 26 weeks will continue to recieve their tier. Just wanted to put that out there. The reports are incorrect and the unemployed left out in the colde is way higher that these reports are reporting.

  29. As a Democrat I am completely disgusted with Reid. There is no reason this should NOT be a stand alone bill - he is holding the unemployed hostage in order to try to push pork. I guess he considers it a win either way - if it doesn't pass, the Republicans look bad and if it does, he gets his extras. Meanwhile those without work and a paycheck are suffering. Democrats and Republican are both to blame but Reid's duplicity is an outrage. Snowe (dare I admit a REPUBLICAN) is the only one making sense.

I never imagined I would be in my late 50's without a job or hope. Get with it Congress, these Banks and risk taking Investors didn't have to beg for the pennies we get on unemployment. We did not bring on the problems that caused us to lose our jobs! To all fellow unemployed suffering in this economy:
There is a website called change.org where one can start a petition. Someone has started a petition on the immediate passage of unemployment extensions. Please follow this link at the end of this comment and sign this petition. By signing it an email will be sent to all appropriate politicians from you. Last time I looked there were almost 8000 signatures on this petition. Word is that this petition has the attention of some politicians including the president. The writer of this petition recently emailed me and told me he received a letter from Republican Senator Olympia Snowe in which she said she would break the filibuster if the bill was presented as a “stand- alone” jobless aide bill.
    See article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/06/25/AR2010062504933.html
I have seen this petition gain a lot of momentum in the last 2 to 3 days. I am writing this as a word document so I can copy and paste it to every online article about unemployment extension legislation I visit. I know that (like me) there are many unemployed Americans who are frequently checking for updates on this legislation. What I ask of you is to do the following:
    1. Copy, paste and save this into a word document.
    2. Every time you visit a website with an article about unemployment extension legislation copy and paste this from your word document to the comment section of the article.
    3. Follow the link below and sign this petition. http://www.change.org/petitions/view/we_demand_an_immediate_passage_of_bill_hr_4213_extension_of_unemployment_benefits
    4. Ask for your friends and family that support your position to sign the petition by sending them a personal email with the link above attached. Ask your spouse or other qualified household members who will support you to sign the petition.
Note: If someone in your household decides to support you, you must logout of Change.org in order for the petition form to open for a new signature.

On a personal note I would like to say to keep your head up and do not let any negative comments from others on these sites get you upset. When you respond to them with anger, resentment and frustration you are just giving them exactly the reaction they want. Instead, spend your time getting this comment out there whenever you can. I have faith that our circumstances will motivate us to get the petition the attention it needs in order to get these politicians to listen. We are many.
Let’s “get the job done” and show those spoiled politicians who have made accusations toward us as a group that we are not the lazy drug addicts they have categorized us to be.

Once again here is the link to the petition.
    Sincerely, Jerry

  85. Even if Obama could get the Senate to realize what is happening and vote yes on additional stimulus (fat chance there anyway), I don't know if it will do any good if Europe goes the austerity route. I doubt if the U.S. can stand alone. If it makes anyone feel better, I think we aren't going to be the only ones out in the street. I hate to sound so pessimistic but I can't see a way out unless the world sticks together and goes along with proping up the economy till it actually catches up again. Maybe the extra guns they can now sell will push us back over the top again....just a little joke to lighten this up a bit.

  86. I'm beginning to think that the Congress doesn't care about us anymore. So what if people are unemployed as long as they keep collecting there pay check every week. Funny how they can get paid when they aren't doing a damn thing to turn things around, but they don't want to pay people unemployement. I'm at my wits end. I have been without income for over a month now and the little bit of savings I had is running out fast. Martin Luther King wasn't the only person to have a dream, so did a lot of other Americans. Instead we have this nightmare.

  88. Employers usually lay off the worst workers firt, so deal with it. Sen Hatch is right using your unemployment checks for alcohol and drugs is disgusting and unproductive. If you feed a stray animal it will simply multiply and return and beg for more. I think that the unemployment checks should be stopped permanently. Let's urge our lawmankers to stand up to the Democrats, and hopefully we can weed out these uproductive elements in our society.

  93. What happened to "We the People". Shouldn't Congress be making decisions for the people, not the government's best interest? If all the Congress and Senate members will give up one month of their salary, I bet that can take care of a good six months of all the people on unemployment and we all know they won't lose any of their assets by just doing so. I worked close to 40+ years of my life to end up with six months of unemployment. Where is the justice, America?!?! Let's get rid of these assholes :-)

Where i come from you would be sucking soup through a straw for a couple months. Any way to those of you so affected by the extension not being passed yet. I feel your pain. My husband has worked like a dog all of his life. And willing to take any job that comes his way. He has worked for every penny he recieved in unemployment benefits. Dont let the scums of the earth get to you. I wasnt even going to reply till i seen that post. I had been in tears literally reading some of the prior posts. My heart goes out to you. My family is in the boat with you. Its truly scary to think how bad our country has deteriorated, That people dont have a home to live in. I just dont understand how we can help blow up other countries and then pay to build them back. Especially when we have families here in such dire straights. I live in a city that is the capitol of the state and once a booming place. Now every where you turn businesses have closed. How can you find work when theres nothing to find. I worked for the dept of corrections for many years. And it makes me sick to see how the inmates dont have the worries that we do. They have a home and three meals and electric. Im mighty afraid there will be many more take up residence in our state prisons at this rate. Please know all of you are in my thoughts and prayers.

    God Bless you all

Even if we try and vote these morons out in November, there are so many special interest groups to offset our votes, and of course they sure want that Spanish vote! I don't think anyone should lose their home because of the current situation, but you should have pepared for the worst when you were working. It's a shame that BP is being subjected to a shakedown by this gangster Obama administration. It's clear that quiet a few people simply want a check and aren't really searching for work. Maybe it takes losing a home or a car or even having your children placed in foster care, so they can learn some work ethic from a working family. Sitting around a watching two parents whinning about an unemployment check will only teach them the same lazy habits.

  115. Our government can't continue to pay people to not work. 26 weeks has to be enough time, because there isn't enough money to go around. If we continue to borrow money to fund this new entitlement, it will bankrupt our nation. The unemployed will not take a job when they can make more on unemployment. Studies show that these extensions are a disincentive for people to find work. I know there are jobs, but people would rather keep their fingers crossed that a good paying job is coming back, when it probably isn't. Lower your expectations and work for minimum wage. You are going to have to sooner or later.

Since your so concerned about the deficit you should understant UI payments stimulate the economy because they are all spent, mostly locally. The hundreds of billions given at ZERO percent to failing banks is not helping the economy. Its not be loaned out. That is what is bankrupting this country. I don't care that you are not sympathetic and many people will take lower paying jobs in the end, but keeping people stable thru the transistion is important for our communities.

I don't see how it helped "the people" of our country. What government DOES NOT have to do is spend over 8 billion dollars each year on NASA programs. Government does not have to bail out every country in the world every time there is a crisis, and government does not have to support every illegal alian who feels like coming into our country. Now Obama wants to grant amnesty to every illegal alien. Why? to get the Spanish vote.

  128. We all need to unite to have our voices heard, I know its hard having to look for work all day only to come home to search for the latest news on unemployment extensions so that we can survive while looking for work but we all must gather the strength to call our state reps and congressmen and go to websites like Change.org to sign petitions and join Opencongress.org to track legislation and votes in congress to be informed on the latest news. We might not be able to travel to DC to march outside the Whitehouse but we can mobilize on the internet. It's discouraging when you see so little involvement from those affected most from this--ones who lost benefits or are about to. For instance, why has Change.org petition only have around 8,000 supporters and counting???? Its great the numbers are growing but we need to gather more support quickly to gain much needed exposure if we want to see this bill passed. I think its because so many claimants don't know about the senates recent vote to discontinue federal benefits. THERE ARE MILLIONS WHO ARE IN A TIER THAT THINK THEY WILL MOVE TO THE NEXT TIER ONCE THEIR CURRENT TIER BENEFITS ARE EXHAUSTED. LITTLE DO THEY KNOW THEY WILL BE THROWN OUT LIKE GARBAGE IF THIS EXTENSION DOES NOT PASS. THEY DON'T KNOW BECAUSE THERE IS LITTLE TO NO MAINSTREAM MEDIA ATTENTION ON THIS ISSUE!!!! IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY DONE SO,
PLEASE SIGN PETITION (TAKES A FEW SECONDS) AT CHANGE.ORG - LINK BELOW AND ALSO JOIN OPENCONGRESS.ORG AND VOICE YOUR CONCERNS ON THIS SITE FOR A BETTER CHANCE AT HAVING YOUR VOICE HEARD BY OUR CONGRESSMEN.

  129. I wasn't going to post on this but after reading a lot of the responses I had to add my two cents. First and foremost Obama isn't on your side! He has lied through-out his whole presidential campaign. People wake up because you need to be focused on the men that are actually running the show behind the iron curtain. Follow the paper trail and it will answer your questions. Your rights are being striped from you and you don't even realize it. The mass media is feeding you lies and implementing their scare tactics to get you to do what the men behind the scenes want. We are spending millions a day to carry on this war in Iraq and Afghanistan. A war that was told to the masses was a war on terror, which is all BS! This is a war to implement the New World Order. If a lot of you would have done your homework for the 2008 elections you would have voted for Ron Paul. The man that has been fighting for our rights that our forefathers set in place for us since his 1988 presidential campaign, and we would not be in this mess. I have a few videos and a good read for you all to see and to pass along to any and everyone you know. Take a stand and spread the word.

For those of you that are complaining about republican vs. democrats are blinded and confused as it doesn't matter which is running. Behind the scenes there is no republican/democrat they are good buddies and are only puppets to the real threat that actually runs our country. The final vote was 261-155. 277 votes (a 2/3rds majority of those present and voting) were needed under the suspension of the rules procedure that was used by the Democrats in order to avoid Republican obstruction tactics.

  134. On June 22nd 2010 Michigan's Sen. Debbie Stabenow introduced a stand-alone unemployment insurance extension bill which would remove the unemployment extension benefits out of H.R 4213.
S.3520 - Unemployment Insurance Extension Act of 2010 The bill extends the filing deadline for extended unemployment benefits, from June 2, 2010 to December 31, 2010.
As of yet the senate has not moved on this bill.
To be clear, the fact that it has been introduced does not in any way indicate that the congressional leadership intends to move on it. In principal I would think this bill would be one that most of the senate would support.
Senate Majority leader Harry Reid makes the ultimate decision on what comes to the Senate floor for debate and votes. Right now he has chosen to move on the Small Business Credit Initiative Act. Keep in mind that Reid has had since June 22nd to move S.3520 - Unemployment Insurance Extension Act of 2010 to the floor for debate. It is a shame that the introduction of this bill has been kept quiet since June 22nd limiting the time frame for the bill and petitions to gain momentum.
Senator Olympia Snowe has urged Harry Reid to move a stand-alone unemployment extension bill to the floor but it appears that the Democratic plan for now still seems to be to keep the unemployment insurance extension together with other “must-pass” items, specifically aid for cash-strapped states struggling to pay for Medicaid. Other parts of the H.R. 4213 bill have been separated. Why not the unemployment extensions?
The unemployment extension issue is being used as leverage.
The democrats are using the unemployed as leverage to get other parts of the bill pushed through.
This petition is specifically targeting Harry Reid. Why? Because as I have said before Senate Majority leader Harry Reid makes the ultimate decision on what comes to the Senate floor for debate and votes. He is the reason S.3520 - Unemployment Insurance Extension Act of 2010 has not made it to the floor. Senator Reid knows how desperate the situation for the unemployed is yet he chooses to use his power as Senate Majority Leader to use them as pawns for the democratic agenda. The republicans are no better. Find something else to use as leverage and stop trivializing the welfare of so many Americans. Is this the integrity you teach and preach for your children and grandchildren to uphold?
We the unemployed and supporters urge Senate Majority leader Harry Reid to move S.3520 - Unemployment Insurance Extension Act of 2010 to the floor for debate. Once this bill is on the floor we ask the Senate and The House of Representatives to pass it with urgency.

Please go to the link at the bottom of this page and sign this petition for the immediate passage of this most recent bill. We need to get signatures quickly to put the pressure on in hopes to get this resolved before the July 4th recess. This is our chance. Let us do what we can and “get the job done” to show those spoiled politicians who have made accusations toward us as a group that we are not the lazy drug addicts they have categorized us to be. Please copy, paste and save this into a word document and use it to post on every website you visit. It is time to use the power of the internet and network.

    Sincerely, Jerry

  136. • For all the people posting there are jobs out there go out and get one...PLEASE PROVIDE US A LIST OF THE COMPANY’S HIRING…OR BETTER YET HELP US GET ON WITH YOUR COMPANY. I’M SURE ALL THE UNEMPLOYED WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR HELP. BETTER YET WHAT ABOUT JOB SHARING…YOU WORK A WEEK AND LET ONE OF US UNEMPLOYED WORK A WEEK. I WONDER HOW LONG YOU WOULS LIKE TO GO WITHOUT A WEEKLY PAYCHECK. Every one of us unemployed people would love to HAVE A JOB! Yes there are a few jobs out there but not everyone can get them. I used to think it was easy to get a job and if people really wanted to work they could find something, flip burgers or whatever. But now that I have been placed in the unemployed situation I see things a lot different. I have gone on several interviews just for them to tell me I'm over qualified and it really stinks. So it’s not that easy just to go out and get any job. ALSO DON’T BE SO CONFIDENT ABOUT YOUR JOB…IT COULD BR GONE TOMORROW. BUT DON’T WORRY…WE THE UNEMPLOYED WILL WELCOME YOU TO OUR SITUATION WITHOUT JUDGEMENT!!!
