Unemployment Extension 2010 - American Extended Unemployment Totals Grow

The unemployment extension 2010 needs to be passed. The 2010 unemployment extension legislation has failed to pass, and the numbers of Americans that are unemployed continue to grow. It's bad enough that Congress failed to pass the legislation before leaving for a long Memorial Day holiday, but the close to one million Americans whose benefits expired on June 2, 2010 are still without resolution.

The total jobless Americans could grow to 1.6 million relatively soon, further compounding the economic problems that surrounds unemployment. For instance, new home sales dropped to an 8 year low. The reason that many Americans have shied away from buying a home is because of fears of getting laid off. Without a potential 99 weeks of benefits, getting unemployed could be a fast track to foreclosure.

As the number of unemployed grow, benefits will be more and more important for the continued economic (and political) success in America. Of course, there are arguments for both sides of the fence.

This November, expect unemployment to be a hot issue. Those who denied the unemployment extension may have a fast track out of Washington into the job market just like their constituents. Expect Obama to get bonus points in the minds of many if he passes an extension via an executive order. The passage of this bill will be very interesting.

Those who are unemployed and need the extension should contact their state representatives to let them know you need the extension. Speaking your mind is the only way to make true "change."

  1. The politicians do not care about the unemployed they know they will not get re-elected and it is low on their priority. I have written my state and federal representatives and all I get is the run around. I wrote to
Pres. Obama and his response was to look to the community for charity!

  3. How do you get in contact with your state rep? Does anyone know? They need to pass this bill soon I will lose everything I have like my car and my apt. I don't have any family to help me I only got 26 weeks and while I'm still looking for work I don't have food on the table to eat or gas in the car to drive to interviews. When will they see that we need help? I don't get it!!

  5. We really need this extentinon. I lost my job due to medical reasons and now I don't have a pot to piss in. What am I to do with three kids to feed. I didn't ask for this but my health has gotten the best of me. I have filed app after app and nothing because most companies are truning those of use who are unemployed away because they think we wont work. I will work if someone will hire me but at this moment in time I now have to worry on how I am going to keep a roof over my childrens heads and food in their mouths. The political prick don't have that problem because their pockets are full and they don't care about the small people.

Survival is a natural instinct and that is what scares me. Watch as the crime rate increases and we are left to find those means the only way to survive.

  9. Nancy Pelosi should be ashamed of herself to turn down tier 5 Unemployment Extensions!

While the US government rushes to help foreign countries in need by spending MILLIONS of our TAX dollars, Nancy Pelosi & the government are still concerned about unemployment tier 5 extension. What about the help we need in our country! Millions of Americans have paid all of their lives into unemployment, and now when tier 5 unemployed Americans need it, their is no more help. Why? so you all can help foreign countries?

WE WANT NANCY PELOSI OUT AND ALL OTHERS WHO ARE OPPOSED TO TIER 5 UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSION'S, AND THOSE WHO RATHER HELP FOREIGN COUNTRIES BEFORE HELPING THOSE HERE IN THE USA.

PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION, AND THE TIER 5 PETITION, WE CAN DO THIS!!!

  11. if you have been watching the senate debate on this bill...you must have seen that one big problem we have is that Harry Reid simply isn't articulate enough to speak on this or any other matter....he continuously stumbles over his words...gets lost in the middle of his remarks and looks alot of times like a bumbling idiot..if only we had Sen Whitehouse or Brown ( Ohio ) as the majority leader we'd have a much better chance I think

  12. Why is this atrocity not being blasted on every news network? I never see anything on the news about this....the whole country needs to see what's about to happen and the people responsible for the suffering of hard working Americans and innocent children....it's a sad day in American history.

  13. With one stroke of the hand Obama could be looking real pretty if he demands an extension because congress refused to pass...he is definately not the leader I though he would be, but that could all be erased if he needs to step in on this!!!

  14. I guess since Congress is getting a check they are not worried about the millions that aren't getting one. So when they recess for the Holiday AGAIN..Millions will be at home trying to figure out what to do, If they don't hurry up and pass this bill It will get crazy and you think crime is up now. Let them sit on this bill longer and it will be out of control

  15. This is the email I sent to Ben Nelson, Susan Collins, Scott Brown, Olympia Snowe, Joe Lieberman and I sent a slightly different version to my congresscritter who is a dumbass Republican. My Senators are Democrats, therefore they have brains and voted for it.

Google your senator's name and go to their website and fill out the contact form to let them know how you feel about their using us as pawns in their political game. I am freaking sick of this.
My email to the douchbag Senators:
Today I got an email from my Representative, Scott Garrett telling me how no new jobs were created. Glad to see that a Republican acknowledges that. So what do you do and your Republican colleagues in the Senate do? You filibuster the employment extension. I was due to receive my FIRST extension last week. Thanks to your newly "fiscal conservative" Republican senators, who didn't give a crap about the deficit to when Bush was in power, I have no money coming in. I will lose my home and that will be just fine with you, right? Why don't you do the right thing for a change and provide some relief to the people who really need it, not the hedge fund managers who created this mess in the first place. Playing politics with our lives is unconscionable.
I don't know if you're up for reelection but if you are, I hope the people in your state have the good sense to see where your loyalties lie. Screw the people who paid taxes for years and use them as pawns in a political fight? You really think you're going to get reelected acting like a teabagger? With my last dime, I will contribute to any candidate opposing you. Shame on you. How do you sleep at night?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Vote all of them out of office. Can new people do any worse. At least when new people start a new job they try to do their best for a few years. These people feel so secure that they will not be defeated no matter that they do. And that has been proved time and time again. The more they screw up the more votes they get.

  23. Well maybe we should all go out and get on Welfare and Food Stamps because that is the only way that we are going to make it. I am 60 yrs old and got layed off my job. I have sent out 15 apps a week and have had three interviews since the first of the year. I am not trash. I am very professional and attractive for my age. Every position that I have applied for, they tell me they get 200 or 300 resumes. How is a 60 yr old person going to compete with a 20 year old with a degree, etc. What are we to do. I have worked since I was 15 and do not like being unemployed.

  25. Our government leaders are always 'Johnnie on the Spot' when it comes to helping those in other countries, but they don't care about the American worker. They give our money freely to foreign countries but won't take care of their own. Our representatives and senators all live in the lap of luxury and take care of themselves quite well with our money. They don't know what compassion for a common man is about.

  26. I just wanna thank the GOP for failing the people of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,, I thank God everyday that i have a job,,, what i don't understand is how a bunch of people who claim to be God fearing Christians can sleep at night,, doesn't there religon teach help your fellow man?? i'm now embrassed that i WAS a republican,, im embrassed that i was stupid enough to fall for all there lies and deceit, another thing i don't understand is how can they let 15 million people go hungry, and yet send billions upon billions of dollors for two wars the people of this country never wanted in the first place,, i was raised to believe that i lived in a country that was for the people by the people, but i guess i was wrong, cause what i learned now is thats it's for the rich by the rich,, and for all of you people who are lucky enough to have a job, and go on web sites to say 15 million people are just looking for a hand out you are just dumb!! Do you really think all these people wanna live like this?? All you people think your smarter then people laid off just looking for a little help, but your not cause you keep falling for republican lies,, do you really think they care about you just cause you got a job??? All they care about is who's gonna put money in there pocket.. another reason why your so stupid is even though you got a job you don't think it effects you, but your wrong, cause now the city or state you live in isn't gonna get the help it needs, and now you might be the next one laid off, and then what?? Maybe one day you will wake up and see the republicans for what they are,, i thank God i finally did!! So once again thank you GOP for failing the U.S., and thank you for showing the people what your all about

  37. Statement from New York Labor Commissioner Colleen Gardner on the UI Extension and Summer Youth Bill

    Albany, NY (June 24, 2010) -
With yet another legislative vote on the horizon that includes Unemployment Insurance (UI) and summer youth jobs, I want to remind those U.S. Senators opposing H.R. 4213 of the moral and economic impact a failed vote would have on those who need it the most.

I want to remind Congress of the heart wrenching stories I hear every day from the unemployed who have exhausted their benefits and have no money to provide the very basics for their families. Some have even lost their homes. They should be reminded that with every dollar paid in benefits to the unemployed, $1.62 goes right back into local economies.

They should be reminded that a yes vote helps some of our most vulnerable constituencies - the unemployed in their time of need, youth who are looking for their first job, and struggling small business owners in need of a lift.

The amount needed to fund this extension is a sound investment that can yield the highest return of all – our continued road to economic recovery. I urge the U.S. Senate to follow the lead of Senator Schumer and Gillibrand and vote "yes" on this important and needed bill.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Please call the following Senators and let them know that we need unemployment extended now:

These Senators are the "swing votes" needed to get the extension passed:

    Scott Brown (R-MA): (202) 224-4543
    Joe Lieberman (ID-CT): (202) 224-4041
    Olympia Snowe (R-Maine): (202) 224-5344
    Susan Collins (R-Maine): (202) 224-2523
    George Voinovich (R-Ohio): (202) 224-3353
    Ben Nelson (D-Nebraska): (202) 224-6551
    Russ Feingold (D-Wisconsin): (202) 224-5323

McConnel, Nelson, Snowe, Lieberman, Bunning, Hatch can all rot in hell. The Republican's could care less about the deficit during the Bush years and now they've developed a conscience. They keep worrying about their Grand Children. I need help now for me and my own kids not kids that don't exist. Keep writing all Senator's. I know he had not read it by then, even if he ever reads it, but that was sure a smack in the face. In regards to Orrin Hatch's assertion that we should drug test all of the unemployed-excellent idea. My husband is clean and so we would not mind this. I am sure if that is the requirement then Sen. Hatch will not mind if we require drug testing for Congressional retirement and benefits as well.

  50. If the supporters of HR 4213 are serious about passing HR 4213 you are two options (if you cannot get the votes):

    • Make the Republicans actually filibuster! (Talk about must see TV)
    • Use the unused stimulus funds to fund unemployment benefits portion of HR 4213!

Otherwise all the posturing is going to look disingenuous!

I have not heard one reasoned argument why the stimulus funds cannot be used…?

The democrats are always late to the game, they let the republicans control the argument, and then never adequately show why the argument is false.

Both major parties are in so love with their own images, that the only change we ever see is on the margins and sometimes we don't even get that!

    How serious are they?

But yet are quick to turn their backs on us as if this is money coming out of their personal bank account’s’ their salaries could take care of a lot of us people who are suffering. I’m so unsure if the government is going to pass a bill or extend these benefits. I cannot spend any money because I DO NOT know when and where my next dollar is coming in from! All these people are worried about are the costs! But these people are not concerned of the well being of the AMERICAN people. They never once THINK twice about helping other countries or factor in the costs of that but when WE the American people are crying out for help and do not receive any progress. OH what a GREAT country we have. I’m starting to HATE my country. I’ve worked all my life to at the end of the day, my job being taken from me with no control, having my whole life taken from me, everything I’ve worked hard for and OWNED to being brought to my knees with nothing!!!!!!!! Maybe I should take my own life! I hate living like this and nobody cares about us.

It has been big business (IBM in particular)and the Chamber of Commerce that have lobbied against passage of HR 4213, let's see how business likes things now that nearly 1 million people will not pay rent and utilities this next month. I called my insurance company and told them why I am unable to pay for my car insurance, they said I would be driving illegally, I suggested they contact their Chamber of Commerce and stop the negative lobbying so the bill can be passed. I am going to do the same with every one of my creditors.

It's not quite the same thing as the house I had for a decade that was swindled from me "foreclosed" They didn't even try to work with me. It was tough for the kids having to give up the house friends the family dog. But it is really getting harder to ask them to keep giving thing's up. So how do I tell them we are now giving up food. The GAS STATION AND THE SUPERMARKET AND MCDONALDS ALL SAID...NO! THEY WOULD NOT HIRE ME BECAUSE I WOULD LEAVE THEM FOR A BETTER JOB IN MY FIELD.

SO NO FOOD TONIGHT KIDS! MAIN STREETS GOING HUNGRY.

I have been unemployed since 2008 due to no fault of my own, used this time wisely while looking for work to go back to school as Obama urged us to do and graduated Salutatorian as a Paralegal but have been unable to secure a job as of yet & will take anything. I thought I would still be covered until October and then to find out I getting no more is devastating. I cannot even function right now to go on an interview as I am terrified

I have worked since age 12 my father started his own business and I had to work every holiday & summer break to earn money for my future, my parents taught me really good values, here I am at age 47 I have paid my taxes and have even worked two jobs at times while raising my daughter all by myself. Now I can't find a job I have had close to 80 interviews over the past six months with companies sending me nice letters that I am over qualified for the minimum wage jobs I have been applying to I have busted my ass out there over the past six months to find anything I keep track of every company & resume I submit and its now close to 875, but now I can't pay my rent and utilities because congress won't pass the extension now I am facing having to live in my car and my cell phone will be turned off because there is no money to pay the bill how will these companies contact me now about a possible job opportunity?
Damn It Pass the extension because I even owe the federal government because the company I worked for got rid of its payroll person and never replaced her and now because of the company I use to work for not taking anough taxes out on its employees I can't even pay my tax bill !!!!

I find it amazing that all of a sudden the two most liberal republicans Collins and Snowe, have decided to ban with the rest of their clan and vote NO on this. I am thoroughly disgusted and will not be voting republican in November for the first time. It angers me so much that our tax payer money pays for them to make decisions for us and yet they could careless what matters in America. The Republicans didn't seem to care about the defecit when it put money into the big businesses hands who in turned screwed the rest of us. How dare they say we do care about Americans!! We need to let Washington know by using our votes the way they were suppose to. We can't let Big Buisness and Big Banks And BIg Oil control the electoral process by making it a system where the man with the most ads wins. We as Americans need to buy American products and force companies to produce here to sell here. The government does not control it's people. The people agree and elect the right honest people we regain our country one election at a time. We end the ILLEGAL AND EVIL SYNDICATE Called "fed" you know that huge trillion dollar allience that is set out for world domination. There was not a survey but my opinion was noted. We need to keep fighting. I've paid into unemployment for over 30 years. It's insurance and not a handout....

  94. The bottem line is this. At this point after you use up the orginal claim for 26 weeks you can jump out a window for all they care in the Senate. The extensions should have been done before Memorial day. To watch these assholes on CSPAN2 with their charts and graphs while people are twisting in the wind is horrible. They have no sence of urgency. They shouldn't be trying to convince each other to pass or not pass this with their stupid, joke, farce graphs and charts. Just get it done. They are creating a new class of homeless people. In the end that will cost more than this bill ever would. People don't have gas to get to an interview. no jobs in the newspaper. Monster.com is a monster joke. There are 1,000's of jobs on the websites, but the whole mechanism and process of hiring is so bad, horrible, that by the time you get hired, you're either homeless or just to worn out to work because of what looking for a job has done to you. You can apply to all these jobs on the website. You have a better chance of hitting the powerball lotto than anyone getting back to you. They find money for other countries when there is an earthquake. They should realize the U.S.A has been hit by an earthquake. The senate is creating many aftershocks!! Michelle Obama is on TV talking about the horrible image of Haiti after the earthquake. We should send them money. Enough! Michelle, you should be talking about the horrible image of this county turning into a bunch of homeless beggers because the animals in the senate are dumbass bastards who are afraid that if they pass this to the end of the year, at the end of the year they will have to pass something again. In their minds this will never end, people will collect for years and years so they are trying to end it now.

  97. I think the person who asked where is the news coverage on this is right, I have been looking for some news coverage of this everywhere yet I have struck out when it comes to televised news coverage. Think about this for a moment if you would.....rather than calling your district reps, senators or congressmen, CALL your local news station and demand they cover this story. It is not being covered because it it time for primary elections setting the stage for November elections. If this got out,. and it should, it would be a disaster for the republican party and some democrats as well. This is the biggest story out there aside of the gulf coast disaster, yet stories like "the longest tennis match ever " or the " making a difference " stories at the end of the NBC Nightly News take priority. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, news coverage of this on television would be the best way to get this thing passed and your voice being heard.SO!!! GO TO THE PHONES AND START CALLING YOUR LOCAL NEWS STATIONS, CALL NPR RADIO, AND ASK WHY THERE HAS BEEN NO COVERAGE OF THE UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSION 2010. CALL! CALL!CALL! CELL PHONES, LANDLINES, INTERNET, EVERY MEANS POSSIBLE. DON'T WAIT! GET UP AND DO IT NOW!

Most United States citizens never benefited from the excesses of the credit boom, i.e. million dollar bonuses, golden parachutes, etc., therefore, in this country’s late hour, why should I be punished for their excesses????? We are being punished for what the top 1/10 of 1% richest people on this planet did!!!!!!!!! It sure is nice they don’t have to suffer. BTW, I am a republican and I WILL NEVER vote republican again. No wonder why the consumer report says Americans aren't spending because we have other problems like trying to get through everyday UNEMPLOYED!!!! I personally am tired of the implication that collecting unemployment INSURANCE is some kind of welfare that I find preferable to going to work everyday.I can't speak for the rest of you but it doesn't even come close to what my income was before I was laid off. And though I'm sure there is a small percentage of people that have been milking it out I firmly believe that the vast majority of us just want to go back to WORK! Isn't it sad that these senators pave the way for their multi-millionaire buddies to cash in their Golden Parachutes while they hand the rest of us Lead Parachutes and tell us to have a nice day.If your not going to help create jobs or assist us in our time of most dire need the WTF good are you?

If he cared about the American people, he would have already extended unemployment AND added a Tier 5 extension by Executive Order. Guess he's too busy bailing out Wall Street and having Beer Summits to do any actual work.

  140. According to a news item, the state of Pennsylvania has a current unemployment rate of 5% so therefore it appears all is well. Of course that statistic does not reflect the thousands of persons who fell off the books at the end of May due to the end of one extension program. June's stats should be even more amazing when they are calculated next month because it will probably show an unemployment rate of 1% after another bulk of the unemployed lose their jobless benefits.

I am a 49 yr old female living in NJ with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and 25 years experience in the I.T. industry including systems design, support and project management. I went for the hottest certifications as added insurance for marketability. I sought positions abroad and spent 4 years working in Asia and the UK to further increase my marketability. I can even converse and conduct business in another language, albeit not fluently. I plodded and did as much as I could to increase my value in the job market. And now I wonder why I bothered. After all the I.T. industry is still considered in the upper ranks of one of the fastest growing careers in the 21st century and beyond.

I was laid off from a consultant position in March 2009 and the only work I have found is a recent part-time retail job. My benefits will most likely end next week.

While this type of work will not cover my no-frills monthly expenses (car payment, car insurance, food) I'm grateful to this employer because they are the ONLY one that actually followed up with me and offered me work. They didn't ignore my application. I wasn't told I was "over-qualified", "would get bored with the work" or immediately discounted because I've had involuntary lengthy unemployment. I find it interesting that these excuses were not used to exclude me as a retail job candidate in which I have less than 1 year's experience but they are the TOP excuses used to disqualify me from any private-sector administrative or I.T. corporate position. I have no problem with working 2 or 3 jobs, even newspaper delivery, because I have done so before - in fact, just several years ago during hard times.

There are no "full-time, permanent" jobs out there that enable Americans to meet their basic needs (food, shelter). The Congressional parties persons opposed to the extension know this and don't really care. They claim they are worried about what future generations will have to pay in taxes to offset an extension of short-term jobless benefits. In my opinion, this is false. Since those opposed are wealthy, the future generation of their own family will inherit such wealth. Ignorance is bliss!

I believe they are deliberately stalling a resolution on this bill until they go on another cushy, paid week-long holiday as of the July 4th weekend. By that time millions of us will have fallen off the unemployment collections book and this will just add to their delusions that unemployment continues to fall and the economy is improving. Therefore, in their minds, there will be no justification to re-introduce the jobless extension bill.

I have friends in other countries who are in disbelief that the U.S. is treating their own citizens like this. The U.S. has spent so many years shoving in the faces of other countries statements about our democracy, value of diversity, no bias re age, race, ethnicity, gender... the Land of Opportunity. What propoganda will they spew when foreign news medias see and start to report the increase in tent cities, foreclosures, crime, welfare requests, suicides etc. due to the millions of unemployed who were tossed aside by the government?

  165. I have been on unemployment for 12 months. Half the time of many other recipients. I live in an ecomonically depressed area where business are closing every day. They can't make it. I have done everything possible to gain employment.
My unemployment was cut off on June 5th.
A few days ago, while watching c-span2 hoping for some positive news, I experienced a visual disturbance. Little golden lights flickering in my proliferal vision. It last for over 12 hours. It wasn't a stoke, it was an ocular migrain brought on by stress. At 56 I was lucky. BUT what of those that are not so lucky? Stress can KILL! Obvious conditions like stoke and heart attack and even cancer are very real possibilities. But what about the not so obvious? What about depression? Could lead to suicide, yep. The father that can't support his family and can't see a way out of the suffering? Use your imagination. It's too horrible to contemplate.
How about the desperation, moves a parent to rob and loot and yes, even murder?
I'm telling you, if something isn't done - and very soon - we could be looking at civil war the likes of which we can't even imagen. The haves against the have nots. The rich won't be safe and that includes our lawmakers in Washington, drawing huge wages. This could literally be the end of our country.
It's time to stop incuring debt sending money to other countries. We need to take care of our own first.

  177. what a disappointment that republicans are heartless. Why didnt they care about the budget spending when Bush was in office. I am not l azy and was laid off because my company went back to their country. Shame on the Gop for not passing this bill Get rid of the 25.00 a week and put some money in to the pockets that need it now. What happened to compassion for american people.

    ReplyDelete
  178. It is totally unbelievable this bill has not been passed. I hope everyone sees the truth about congress now. If you are unemployed, on welfare,or a smoker, you are screwed. Why? Because your voting numbers are just not large enough for you to matter. That's right, you are a number only, period. I hope Mr. Hatch profits from the medical special interest who no doubt urged him to introduce the drug testing amendment. That will make them millions. I wonder what Mr. Hatches cut will be? Don't you...Can't wait till November.

  179. and it didnt pass 57-41 this is so ridiculous, use the stimulous, raise the deficit, lessen the money on this war most dont favor, stop pork spending, stop giving us unemployment for just 30 days... this need to be long term till we can get business to begin hiring again.

Reid is asking for just 30 days now, for temp help...but if it passes what happens? we have to do this all over again, worry? wait? this is not leadership, this is childish and high school behavior!

  182. What insanity exists in the minds,of the would be dictatorship, presently governing our current administration. We the people, are starving;losing everything, homeless;because the regulators, our goverment, let run amuck, instead of doing their jobs,so wall street and big banks, could write bad loans ,for bad mortgages, knowingly duping international investment firms, and nearly collapsing the world freemarket, for what amounts to fraud, and no one is held accountable. What little red book,or manifesto, are they a party to.Tax paying americans, who have paid into unemployment, in excess of 20 plus years, and never collected any benefit from, aren't entitled to what amounts, to less than one percent of what they paid in, before interest. And Bernie Madoff,is guilty of what crime. What hipocrasy is ruling our country;should not all laws, apply equally to all.Especially, members of congress.AMERICANS INTERESTS,are of no consequence. Why not have the banks repay the bailout funds sitting idly by,to bailout the citizens, who have committed no crimes;but are victims of their own goverments inability to do what they swore oaths to do.Or better yet pay full restitution, plus interest,to all the unemployed, who essentially, are losing everything they worked their whole lives for.The amounts paid to them all, would still pale in comparison,to what congress is paid collectively, over their life times.Equality dose not exist anywhere in our democracy. All that matters are getting into office, and all bets are off.Perhaps a little change is in order.

  186. Democracy and "We the People..." is now a bunch of hypocrecy and trash my friends. This is the new era of big interests and big corporations. Big corporations, Wall Street and others of the same school now tell Congress what they ought to do and vote for, if they want to keep their seat. If we ever find a job, we must keep working to keep big corporations and rich Senators living the good life. By the way, those in Welfare have been living on the system for decades, and they don't run into these kind of problems! The problem comes when you work! The good news is: AIG, the banks, all top executives, Wall Street, they all got the billions they needed, all in due time. By the way, we must continue financing with deficit a war nobody even knows for what purpose! This is the new America. Looks like corruption to me, but that's a problem in 3rd world countries, of course, not here.

  187. I posted earilier today at 5:17pm. I'd like to add 1 more item to my dismal commentary. If unemployment goes, what do you suppose is next?
Medicare and Medicade? Welfare and food stamps? Disability? Social security has been running in the red for years. How many millions of people have to suffer?
Unemployment alone is at 1.6 million by the end of the month. The prospects are dire.

  193. JUNE 24, 2010

"The unemployment extension again failed to make it past a vote to limit debate in the U.S. Senate on Thursday evening.

The revised version included tax cuts sought by business groups and other provisions sought by both parties failed to advance to a vote. No Republican voted to end debate, which would have advanced the bill. Florida's senators votes were split: Nelson voted for debate to end on the measure, LeMieux did not.

If no other bill is proposed, more than 200,000 people a week will lose their jobless benefits. In Florida, more than 34,000 residents a week are losing their benefits since federal emergency benefits expired on June 2. The Senate has been debating various versions and amendments to the bill for eight weeks, with Republicans arguing the unemployment payments would add to the federal deficit.

Is this the end of the unemployment extension? "I hope not. The stakes are too high," said Judy Conti, lobbyist for the National Employment Law Project, an advocacy group for the nation's 15 million unemployed."

  194. Checking the history books is fine, but really isn't the writting already on the wall with blinding illumination. We are not looking at just an economic depression. It's much worse. I posted eariler at 5:17pm and again at 7:13pm.
I truely believe this is an accurate depiction of the future of our homeland. Ever seen "Mad Max"? Our senaters love quoting actors and movies. Maybe they should go to the video store and rent this one. This isn't science fiction, it is the future unless they pull their heads out of their collective asses, take a look at the reality and act quickly to correct their failures. They are responsible for this mess. They tell B.P. to take responsibility and clean up their mess, it's time for them to look in the mirror and act like grown ups and clean up their own mess.
