2010 Unemployment Extension Benefits Bill, Sharron Angle, and Harry Reid

The 2010 unemployment extension benefits bill has not passed.  The unemployment benefits extension is a hot political debate, especially in the state of Nevada.  Currently, the Silver State has 14% unemployment and they most recently surpassed Michigan as the state with the highest unemployment totals.  It comes as no surprise that during the next election, the unemployment benefits extension bill will be a hot topic.

Sharron Angle is the Republican candidate for the Nevada Senate seat.  She is a tea party favorite, and she's made a lot of headlines since winning the Primaries for the mid-term election.

Angle was recently quoted as calling the unemployed "spoiled" much to the dismay of ... well, the unemployed and all those that back helping the unemployed. These are not wise words for a politician seeking election in the state with the highest unemployment level in the country (but at least she was honestly speaking her mind and not giving us smoke and mirrors on her views...)

Recently, she "clarified" the statement - but instead of softening her remarks she further indicated that unemployment benefits should be cut to the point where it's hard to live on them, forcing the unemployed to find work.

Obviously Angle hasn't been job hunting recently.

On the other side, Harry Reid - the Democratic Senator and Senate Majority Leader from Nevada is for the passage of the unemployment benefits bill.  He's tried several times to bring the vote to the Senate floor and has tried to block the Republicans' attempts at filibusters.

Angle's stance on the unemployed and unemployment benefits extension may very well be the proverbial nail in the coffin this election year. Unemployed individuals even from other states are outraged by her remarks, and believe that her stance shows how ill-informed she is about the situation in the country today.

On the other hand, her supporters rally behind her, sick and tired of the government adding to the deficit spending all the time.

  1. I think that this lady needs to take a look at how this will effect the public one more time. What about the people that have children with cancer and were recently laid off due to bad choices made by our government? If our government had made better choices, maybe our economy wouldn't be so bad. This lady only cares about her own image and pocket book, and if she gets office, then everyone that votes for her would see what fools they are. Our unemployment rate is high already, what do you suppose this will do?

  3. Let me tell you just how spoiled I am with unemployment, I barley make my bills with the money I get, I have to walk to places to put in my resume and to top it off my son snow in the icu due to no money for his meds. Now I am trying to come up with rent money and money for food. I now weigh 91 pounds because I rather have my boys eat than myself. The last payment I got was at the beginning of the month which wasn't even a full payment. I would much rather have a job than be broke all the time. I have worked two jobs at a time for the past five years because there dad doesn't pay child support and is almost $20,000 behind. So you tell me that's being spoiled? This is not something I want this money is something I have to have. I have only been unemployed for four months so don't make all of the honest ones look bad.

  4. I can't imagine Republican's getting in office after the many states start seeing how this will trickle down right on to their golf courses.

No economic plan to recovery and growth would support this.

Bad move on the side of the Republicans. See all of you in November.

  9. Another attempt from the Republicans to bankrupt the middle class so they cannot get to the polls to vote in November. Once again I say that this is a form of terrorism that the Republican party is doing! Any person or persons who willingly create or perpetuate the downfall of the United States of America's economy and or willfully create hardships for a large portion of United States Citizens for personal gain should be incarcerated and judged at the least a traitor up to a terrorist! Is it the policy of Republicans in congress to use defeatists tactics to get their way? I for one am fed up and will be looking for a way to bring class action law suits against those Republicans that are displacing so many Americans in the name of self preservation in congress. Enough is enough!!!

  11. Whats funny but its true rich keep getting richer and poor keep getting poorer. We call this America, how when american government people keep fucking american people. They need to make a t.v. show where Republicans or Democrat trade places with your regular folks and see what we have to go threw and we can see how the rich life is. Hey just a thought!

  12. This is B.S.! I am one who has worked his whole life from the age of 15. I was Laid off since last November (2009). They are talking 7-8 extensions? Not I. But now my unemployment is running out because my benefits didn't expire 1 day before the deadline! Why don't they debate how it is going to get paid for after they pass the bill? While these Republicans want to argue this, thousands of hard working people are going to be tossed out into the street. It is very possible I go behind them soon. Try looking your family in the face and explaining to them why they are going to be homeless.

  13. No wonder Palin supports this candidate. She is as misinformed, out of touch and stupid as Palin. What kind of values are these? I am certainly not a Republican, I may be disillusioned with the Democrats, but God save us from the Tea Party if this is their stance.

  14. SHARON ANGLE CAN KISS HER CAREER GOODBYE IN NOVEMBER , THE AMERICAN PEOPLE YOU HAVE CRUSHED WILL NOT FORGET. SEE YOU ON THE STREET...

  15. Maybe someone should lay them off, maybe they shouldnt have money, 200 a week from unemployment I am already not making it, however, it did help keep food in my childrens mouth and some kind of roof over their heads. I would like to see them struggle with no food, no lights, or power becasue bills cant get paid. I am an educated woman Masters degree I have earned, and I still can not find a job. Therefore, the educated and uneducated middle class and poverty is all in the same boat. I cant wait to cast my votes. We are the people that put you in your seats, we are the ones that give you your jobs, but you can not help us out when we are in need. Enough is enough!!!

  16. In the end, not only the republicans are to be blamed. They agreed to the bill under the condition that it should be paid with unused stimulus money. I think both parties are playing politics, but they couldn't find a worse moment for us. Now they are blaming each other and nothing is getting done. If they really want to help us they should come to an agreement of some sort.

  17. My husband worked in Nevada for years to earn unemployment that only lasted 26 weeks. FIX this now. There are no jobs. The fact that there are now no extensions available in nevada is awful nevada should do what other states have done and add there own extension. PLEASE fIX THIS WE NEED HELP THIS IS NOT A HAND OUT MY HUSBAND PAID IN TAXES TO FUND THIS.

  18. Shut up and put up.

My child is not spoiled because she likes to eat. I hope you get run out of town and come here to Texas. Then you can say that to my face. I'm a single mom and I think it'd be best if you just shut up until you can bring the unemployed parents of Nevada's children some jobs.

Very simple, shut the pie hole until you bring a plan that works to the table. We're tired of your excuses... They don't get food on the table.

  19. That's a great idea... there should be a REALITY show where politician's trade places with unemployed people. In November the Republicans and Blue Dogs will find out personally about being unemployed. This November... imagine how many Republican voters will be voting Democrat for the first time, or do the politicians think that millions without thier unemployment benefits are all democrats? MR & MRS REPUBLICAN SENATOR, keep voting no, your payback is coming.

  20. Blame the democrats from not using the stimulus money that they want to save for the Wall Street buddies.

  21. Her strategy is to target the unemployed as a group to hate. She is trying to get the people that have jobs to back her and hate the unemployed for being lazy and spoiled. Unfortunately for her, in a state with 14% unemployment, even the people with jobs are very nervous, and not interested in listening to an idiot who wants to mess with their only possible life line.

  27. Why pay for it with stimulous money when we need stimulate job creation? Why not pay for it with a tax on hedge fund managers? ... oops oh yeah, the republicans are against taxing hedge funds. OK how about paying for it with removing Bush tax cuts for the super wealthy, the cuts that caused a surplus budget to become the trillion plus deficit we have now? ... oops oh yeah, .... the republicans don't want thier wealthy golf partners to have to pay taxes. OK well then let's pay for unemployment by cutting the bloated wasteful defense budget and billion dollar a day wars that have yielded nothing but dead and maimed young soldiers? Hmmm.... can't do that, Halliburton and friends run the dog and pony show in washington, not we the people.
OK OK yeah, let's pay for unemployment by robbing stimulous money and creating more unemployment..... why are Republicans so DUMB or are they just EVIL?????? Happy 4th of July, can't wait to see these guys show up at thier local parade festivities I'm sure they will get a "warm" welcome.

    ReplyDelete
  33. They don't hear anything we are saying...They don't care..They have their food and money. I will vote against every one of them in November and I hope all others do the same. If we don't it it will only get worse. I lost my home and now I am getting ready to live in the car that I have left. That's all I have I sold all my jewelry including my grandmothers engagement ring just so I could feed my children. If I had money which obviously I don't anymore I would move the hell out of the US. This place and government suck ass.

  34. She may seem a bit harsh, but I see her as being better than the alternatives down the road. The person whose child is in ICU is a sad situation, and yet if they ration healthcare under Obamacare that is one key target for rationing of care. I have more sympathy for that child's future under Obamacare than I do now.

For those who live in Nevada where it is "sand", move. Go where the jobs are. Look at Texas who has kept unemployment pretty low. My father's family moved from Missouri to California during the Depression to eat. My family moved out of California when the space program went bust to a place where there were jobs. I moved out of the oil territory to high tech country when oil busted in the 80's. If you want a job, stop looking where there aren't any and go where they exist.

If we really want to blast our politicians on keeping others out of this country "taking our jobs" it is time for us to be willing to take those jobs ourselves. Go to Arizona where they are clamping down on illegal immigration and take the jobs that the illegal immigrants would have done.

How many day labor employment agencies have people applied to? It may not be money every day, but every little bit helps.

For what it is worth, I too am unemployed and face the same lack of income. I'm probably better off because I remember the oil crash of the '80's and neighbors who delivered newspapers to make their mortgage payment. I remember 100+ people applying for every job. I expected this to be worse than that and I'm operating on the expectation that it is going to get worse before it gets better. I'm in the last stages of picking the best place to move to since I'm not successful in finding a job here.

It is going to get worse. Complaining about how bad it is now and how others aren't going to help you doesn't help you prepare for a time when it will be worse than now. What can you do to prepare for those times?

I pray for all who don't have jobs. I pray that we all get our "daily bread", whether it comes from the foodbank or the kindness of a local grocer or we can afford to pay for it. I pray that this struggle and hardship teaches us how to come together and care for one another instead of complaining about those who impose discipline before things get too much worse.

Because instead of the head of household "bringing home the bacon" and surviving off one paycheck like it was years ago, they expect not just fathers but mothers as well to work work work!! There's no parental supervision at home!! Everyone's at work!!! Except of course for those individuals who are unemployed (myself included). I have been unemployed for over a year now. The government may take away my unemployment money but they can't take away the precious time I've had to actually be a mom to my eight year old. It is just money folks, you let it consume you and it will. Be positive and optimistic. GOD FIRST!!

My mother has worked as a Property Manager for the past 20 years or so and is also unemployed and in the same boat(so to speak). Except she has run out of benefits and is now living on my fathers disability check that he gets once a month. Now how are we supposed to survive on this? I'm not saying you have to pass it but if not at least create more jobs for the rest of us to survive, it's not like were not willing to work.

  85. I wish these politicians could spend one week in our shoes. The thought makes me smile. I am currently unemployed and until last week I was receiving unemployment. First off, the unemployment we do receive, is only 1/3 of our original income. I pay child support on my three sons and barely have enough for gas to pick them up on my weekends. I have submitted 400+ resumes/applications and have had a few interviews with no sucess. As part of the rules of unemployment you must provide proof of your job searches, so its not like were not looking for work. I know that I could get a job at McDonalds but that wouldnt pay my child support much less help me survive. The thing is the same money that they are dening us, is our money as tax payers. We are the ones that have worked hard just to make it and then have the goverment tell us how much money we owe them. Its almost like a mobster movie where some Mobster is putting the squeeze on some poor buisness owner. Its our money and if we didnt pay as much in taxes we could probably afford to take a lower paying job.
