Unemployment Benefits Extension: 2010 Updates

The unemployment benefits extension 2010 bill will be brought to a vote later on today.  At 2:15 pm EDT, Carte Goodwin will be sworn in as interim Senator from West Virginia .  He is the replacement for the late Robert Byrd, who died before being able to vote on the measure the last time it was brought to the floor.

With the advent of Carte Goodwin, it appears as if the measure will have the votes necessary for passage. This is assuming that Republican Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins stay on-board as the only politicians in their party approving the bill.

The extension is needed.  There are literally millions of Americans in need of some type of relief – either through jobs or through unemployment checks.  There are over 8.6 Americans who are considered long term unemployed.  Even though 313,000 jobs were added to the payrolls in June, that’s hardly a drop in the bucket considering these figures.

President Barack Obama is on the side of those who need to find work. He said during his weekly address: It's time to stop holding workers laid off in this recession hostage to Washington politics. It's time to do what's right. Not for the next election, but for the middle class”

The true test will be to see what happens today.  Carte Goodwin will be sworn in, and then the Senate can get to their business of trying to pass an extension.   Fasten your seatbelt, folks – it’s going to be an interesting day!

  2. To everyone that is on unemployment and is responding to these blogs. We can sit in front of our computers and complain. That might make you feel a little better to let off some steam but the Senators that are blocking the extension benefit bill are not reading these blogs. They don’t care. What we can do is take action. Start calling every Senator that is blocking this bill. Most of these guys opposing this bill are millionaires, so you can see why they don’t care. To find your Senators contact info go to Senate.gov. Once you get their DC office number and fax number blast their phones with calls everyday. Some of them are saying unemployment benefits is just an incentive to not look for work and have even said we were lazy. So call and call and call.

We have to get our message across. Let me be clear if you have a phone service that will charge you a fee for calling Washington DC then don’t, save your money for your family. The rest of us that have a phone plan that doesn’t charge for long distance don’t have an excuse! Now Ben Nelson is on this list. This is a democrat who voted no and why not his net worth is 17 million and doesn’t get it. So quit complaining and flood those lines. Flood – Flood – Flood those lines. Just added Senator Reid to the list. He called Obama weak when he (Reid) could have made the Senate stay over the 4th break until this bill was passed, but he wanted the President to come to his state for a fund raiser. Now they won’t even vote on the bill till Tuesday the 20th so include him to the calls. You don’t even have to pick your Senator; Senator Kyl said this last week that unemployment benefits is a necessary evil, so his phone needs flooded with calls. We can sit back and wait or use some energy to do something ourselves. Flood those lines. Don’t forget this November about those Senators and Congressman that have voted no on this bill. Vote them out. It isn’t because of the deficit that they voted no; they have been against everything the Democrats tried to pass since Obama was sworn in. In fact Minority leader Mitch McConnell told a group of young republicans last week the GOP has it’s groove back by stopping all the Dem’s progress. They are playing politics with our lives.

Congressman Pence of Indiana said twice on TV this week that while he was at a state fair, people were not concerned about unemployment benefits they were concerned about the deficit. That just doesn’t make since. I am 49 years old and I have met maybe 10 people in my life that the deficit is their major concern. Also it must be nice for the congressman to take his family to a state fair on our dime, since our taxes pay his salary and expenses. Last but not least Pence isn’t going to find the unemployed at a state fair. Blow up his phone with calls for his stupid comments.

    Lets not forget the 99ers

  3. The problem with unemployment extentions is that the public never sees just how bad the employment situation is .They stop the estentions and they wil just how bad it really is. the extentions can only go on for so long but it will eventually end. That end will reslut in billions more in Economic debt and a problem of no job creation which results in the problem increasing to which nobody seems or obana adminsitration doesnt want to deal with .this about politics, that is why obama holds the Gop as the scape goat.He makes it look like he is the middleclass savings grace .well in november , theren will have to be another Unemployment extention and it will pass agian because it ensures Obama followers and voters that he is doing something.but its like a drug dealer supplying the drugs, the people become addicted to it and the dealer has control over them .the more and more that relationships last , the worst the outcome. The bottom line to this is that the Tax payers are going to pay this bill in the Forms of more Taxation, the hidden tax on all americans. Were all going to pay an extremely high price for this mess and the costs will also efect the future generations. Economic collapse is certain withen 10 years but i suspect a lot sooner. Welcome to the New world Order !

  4. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the right choice is made today. I am out of work and me and my family are depending on the unemployment until a job comes along. We have paid this money in and when time comes that you need it you should not have to worry about not getting it. So hopefully the right choice will be made.

  6. I'd rather get it late than not at all. Been outta work for the past year. I diligently look for work each day, but have come up dry. And when I am fortunate enough to land an interview, there are LOADS of competition.

  7. I keep hearing Rush say that the extension will go out to 2 1/2 years...Does he mean that the 99er's are going to get help or that he does not know what he is talking about?

  8. I have a family that i am concerned about! I have put in applications for jobs and all i hear is we will call or not hiring! 9. i agree that we need to do something and one of the things that i have been doing is posting the senators contact info and petitions on my facebook to get everyone involved because the people in office are not reading these blogs so people we must stay active in making our voices heard where it counts. also yes it may have to be passed again yet still even after this time (if it happens)until we, the american people get back on our feet. this whole situation with people being out of jobs and not being able to find work is not our fault in my opinion. it is and has always been due to politics, we are just going along for the ride trying to make ends meet. and no everyone that gets unemployment is not lazy and we're actually very intelligent and active in making life better for our families. and believe it or not many of us have degrees so it's not even about needing more education either.so people please don't beat yourself up.....WE ARE GOING TO MAKE WITH WHATEVER HAPPENS....I LOVE YOU GUYS

  10. We will not have to wait 4 months to see a check. If all goes as planned states will start receiving funds effective Thursday 07.22.2010 and into next week. Most states are preparing to administer UECs immediately once the funds become available. My best to all the American families and folks who put up with all the GOP's unprofessional conduct in the Senate.

  11. ok Think, I understand unemployment has to end one day, we did not think that jobs will ever end in qualities like everything is closing down!If unemployment is not extended to those who are in need, you will have more crime level, honest people who are honest will turn to not being honest because they have families to take care of!I dont want to deal with that, more people turning to suicide because they cant cope with the stress, more people looking at the congress not the president because it has to be passed by the house and senate then to the president!! It does not matter who is in presidentcy, i will over look that because this damage was done way before now,we are just feeling the effect from the cause along time ago! Why not pass the bill and help further destruction from being done in the near future. Lets help the right now!!! I will appreciate it now as well as keep looking for a job now to help my future!!!

  13. Living in poorest county in Ohio with the highest unemployment. Husband and both sons off work, I'm diabled. I want ANY politician to come to dinner at my house, please come soon, while I still have my house. We'll be having plain rice tonight, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I know I'm grateful we have that!!
Here's a thought, stop spending money on Vietanm Part II and bolster our economy with that money. Fine the hell out of BP NOW!!! Unemployment checks should have the BP logo on them. Take the "golden umbrella" from all politicians, make them pay into Social Security and live on $684.00 a month when they retire. Hyper-tax every company who sends jobs out of the country or buys their parts and pieces from other countries and then hyper-tax everything they send back in!!! They have destroyed our reputation, economy and lives and don't seem to want to do anything sensible to fix this...and it can be fixed.
Read the disclaimers on the Toyota and Hyundai car commercials...sure they are built in the USA, but the fine print says the components come from outside the country!!! Stop this now!!!
Be American, Buy American!! Read the fine print!!

  14. Hey Anonymous....we...the unemployed ARE tax payers. We are not "junkies" hookes on unemployment checks that are no where near what our earnings were before we became unemployed. I would much rather have my job. My husband and I BOTH worked since we were 16. I lost my job as a retail manager after 14 years with the same company due to "downsizing"...which meant they found younger employees who were willing to do the job for less money and bonus. I was 1 in 7 employees who lost thier jobs in just this area...all of us had been there more than 10 years. My husband worked with a broken foot for his company (he was a plant manager) When business slowed enough that he could take off for surgery, the bone could no longer be fixed with a screw...the bone had to be removed. He was off for 82 days and when he returned..he found out he was replaced. He agreed to continue working for a much lower salary and a substantial demotion because he NEEDED the job. Within two days they canned him. That company violated the FMLA...but we live in a state that basically says an employer/or employee can terminate employment at will...so the law cant even help us. We have worked the past 30 years to acquire what we have..in the past two we have lost almost all of it. Our retirement GONE...had to sell the two newer cars to buy one older one. We have scaled back every part of our life...sold or pawned every and anything...and we stand a good chance of loosing our home. We send out or apply for no less than 5-10 jobs daily (sometimes more). We want nothing more than our WORKING lives back...but for every job we apply for there are hundreds of other people who have applied as well. Our resumes probably arent even seen half the time. Since I was a hiring manager, I know when you are flooded with applicants, you dont read every application/resume that come across your desk. You seek out qualified canidates and with the amount of people out of work, I'll bet that employers find plenty of those in the top half of thier pile. I assume you left that post Anonymously, because you know someone just like me...you just wouldnt call them a "junkie" to thier face. So us "junkies" have worked our lives and paid our taxes and are not asking you to support us. And as far as the deficit goes..the Bush tax cuts would benefit the wealthy and cost so much more now and in the future, than helping our the working class is going to. Have a little empathy and pray to God that you dont find yourself in need of a government "fix" anytime soon.

  15. This is a time for prayer. Pray that God touches the heart of those against the bill. Phillippians 4 : 19 says but my God shall supply all my needs. This is our time to call on the name of our Lord. For it is He that will give us the victory. See after we have suffered for awhile, God comes through and He is always on time.

  16. Can someone tell me, if the extension is passed will I be able to continue to receive unemployment. I have had 26 weeks, ended in second week of June. I saw something that said if you were not in a high percentage state with no jobs there would not be extension. Hopefully I read that wrong!!! There are no jobs here in Nebraska.

  17. For all of you who think that this should not be passed, for whatever reason that you have come up with, let me just say that I'm glad that you are so judgmental that you are willing to see families and children starve as well as living in their cars or the street. I'm very happy that you are well fed and happy yourselves. I would hate to think of you as suffering like the rest of us who are still unemployed. Not everyone is lazy or stupid. Many are just out of work and hungry. Some have had to sell their vehicles that would get them to work if there was any work to be had, just to make ends meet. It is not the Presidents fault, at least not this President. If you want to fault a President for where this country is, try the last one.

  18. It's amazing on how the republicans are so quick to help the rich get tax breaks and fight so hard for them to increaes their wealth. But do so little to help the hard working people who struggle from pay to pay or depend on their unemployment to survive. Republicans only see unemployment as a handout and not the life line to so many hard working Americans who lost their jobs of no fault of thier own. It's sad to realize that the republicans are only concerned about the budget and not the welfare of THE AMERICAN FAMILIES on unemployment. What do the republicans think it's going to cost us when more and more homes are lost, more and more unpaid medical bills, and more people applying for welfare; all of this will increase the DEBT also. So for all of the REPUBLICANS who voted NO FOR THE UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSION YOU should start thinking about THE HARD WORKING AMERICANS OF THIS COUNTRY AND NOT JUST THE RICH.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Our country is in dire need of an economic face lift. To provide UEB to the people who right now face losing homes, delinquent bills, and fuel for their vehicles to drive and search for employment, would provide a true injection into our poor economy. Remember in the fall folks those GOP leaders in the Senate who stalemated this bill which should have been passed many weeks ago.

  20. I have posted it before, even if this bill gets passed, still send letters, emails, faxes, copies of your bills, etc., to the senators. Let them know that the money is needed for survival. Let them see how we are taking a very little and stretching it. I am serious. Unemployment has to be extended again and again until the JOB MARKET gets better which IT IS NOT. If they had some sense, which most of them do not because they are already rich, they would extend it till next year. I mean let's get real here extend it till next year and then go back and review the situation. November fine but still extend it.

  22. If they get this bill passed, please do not forget who was for us and who was against us in the november election and other elections after that. Please do not forget this situation let it be a lesson. The rich is not for the poor and middle class.

  23. As to the person who said you have paid this $ in and deserve it now. I'm sure you deserve it from having worked many years, but you did NOT pay in unless you were running a business and had to pay business taxes to the Unemployment Office in your state to cover your employees. I work for a state UI office. Your employer pays in as a requirement in the event that they have to lay people off due to lack of work. YOU didn't pay in. Just trying to clear up a common misunderstanding...

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree do not forget who was against us in office and who was for us in office. If any of you get blessed and get a job, please do not forget the struggle we had to go through this time to get an extension. Do not forget that ever when you go to the polls. I will never forget it. Also, I agree that they should keep extending it until the job market clears up which is going to take a mightly long time. Oh yes, I have been praying day and night.

  25. It is so hard to get a job; today morning I have applied to at least 10 jobs, and talked with recruiter, and the recruiter was basically rebuking about why I don't have job for 20 months. When I said, that companies are not hiring much so I don't have job but I am trying to get job, she said that is not true....

People are not even interested in me as I was not able to get a job in last 20 months...

  29. "After 6 weeks of failure and delay, the Senate this afternoon finally voted to end a Republican filibuster of the unemployment insurance extension bill, allowing it to move forward towards final passage and becoming law. The Senate still has to take one more vote on the bill, but the motion they passed this afternoon was the big hurdle that, until now, they had been unable to overcome. The bill is now virtually guaranteed to be signed into law this week." We the people are not done!! Come fall 2010 we need to remove those Republicans who ignored the common man and woman and their struggle to survive! Oh yes and those two particular democrats who joined in on the GOP filibuster.

  35. Don't forget that they haven't covered everyone yet. I'm not a 99er, but I feel their pain. Don't let up...keep hounding them until everyone is covered. You could be a 99er someday yourself. The jobs haven't come back yet. We still need everyone to continue to pursue your congressional delegation to get everyone covered. There is power in numbers.
Also, to the person that posted that people don't pay in to unemployment, but that the employers do....in most states that is the case, but there are some states (New York and New Jersey are two of them) in which part of the unemployment insurance is actually paid by the employee.
I will never ever, ever forget what the Republicans have put me through.

  36. Watch out now for the trolls on these blogs posting comments to try to place the blame on the Democrats. They'll try to spin it to make it look like the delay was the fault of the president or the Democratic party. I've been paying attention. I know who is to blame.

  40. For the poster from Nebraska:
I don't know whether you will receive the extension or not. I believe that it applies to states with an unemployment rate of 8.5% or greater, but I can't say for certain. I'm thinking Nebraska's unemployment rate is something like 4.5% I CAN tell you for certain that if I lived in Nebraska, I would start planning today and working on a retirement party for one Ben Nelson in 2012!
Maybe you should call him. He apparently thinks that Nebraska has plenty of jobs since he voted with the Republicans. Maybe he has one for you.

  42. Not at this point, but we all need to keep lobbying our congressional delegation to add a bill to create a Tier 5. I'm not a 99er, but any of us could be because the jobs still aren't out there. We need to continue to work together.
