A 99er Tier 5 Unemployment Extension Bill: Berkley vs Stabenow

A 99er Tier 5 unemployment extension is needed.  The Tier V to survive movement is strong, and 99ers are in need of an extension of unemployment benefits.  Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) is one Senator who has worked diligently to offer benefits to the country through her S3706, Americans Want to Work Act.

There's also a House version of the bill, from Shelley Berkely (D-NV).  The House bill only covers states with 10% unemployment or higher, whereas Stabenow's cutoff is 7.5%.  Stabenow's bill also includes provisions which give businesses a tax incentive to hire displaced workers, whereas Berkeley's bill is only to extend benefits to jobless workers.

No matter what, the fact remains - Americans are suffering and are in need of help.  With unemployment rates not really facing any form of relief during the past couple of years, there's the strong reality that our economy is not in an optimal position for job growth.  Those without jobs are without luck, and we owe it to them to help them out.

Currently, up to 99 weeks are available to states that meet criteria.  The Stabenow bill would add an additional 20 weeks of benefits.

  3. Any state over 7.5% should be included in the bill. Just 10% or higher is rediculous. The percentages shown aren't even the real numbers. The percentages are much higher. Don't just help some people survive when the majority of the states are suffering.

  6. Why wouldn't you remove that first idiots' statement? The vulgar comments are just what is needed for opposition to say " See they are all just a bunch of low lifes who are too lazy to look for work and only want a free hand out at the taxpayers expense."

  8. U.S. Military Criticized for Purchase of Russian Helicopters
    By Craig Whitlock

The U.S. government is snapping up Russian-made helicopters to form the core of Afghanistan's fledgling air force, a strategy that is drawing flak from members of Congress who want to force the Afghans to fly American choppers instead.

In a turnabout from the Cold War, when the CIA gave Stinger missiles to Afghan rebels to shoot down Soviet helicopters, the Pentagon has spent $648 million to buy or refurbish 31 Russian Mi-17 transport helicopters for the Afghan National Army Air Corps. The Defense Department is seeking to buy 10 more of the Mi-17s next year, and had planned to buy dozens more later.

The spectacle of using U.S. taxpayer dollars to buy Russian military products is proving a difficult sell in Congress. Some legislators say that the Pentagon never considered alternatives to the Mi-17, an aircraft it purchased for use in Iraq and Pakistan, and that a lack of competition has enabled Russian defense contractors to gouge prices.

"The Mi-17 program either has uncoordinated oversight or simply none at all," said Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., who along with Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., has pushed the Pentagon to reconsider its purchase plans. "The results have led to massive waste, cost overruns, schedule delays, safety concerns and major delivery problems."

U.S. and Afghan military officials who favor the Mi-17, which was designed for use in Afghanistan, acknowledge that it might seem odd for the Pentagon to invest in

  12. With all the money always being sent around the world, it's a shame thatAmericans in need have to beg. How many homes, farms, etc could be saved if foreign aid was to be decreased. As far as the so called 99ers are concerned, whatever they are called, we need help in the form of additional extensions until things turn around.

  14. Why are we focusing on people like Beck??? I don't think concervatives or liberals are helping much at this point. I wish Democrats would just budge to Republican demands and use Stimulus money to pay for unemployment extended benefits and help the 99ers! Instead Democrats are using us as pawns. What do Democrats think is more important than helping the 99ers??? Please contact your Democrat representatives and demand they use left over Stimulus funds to help the 99ers NOW!!!

If the Democrats had done that the Republicans would have said OK and we wouldn't even be discussing this. Thank you so much for bringing that up. Finally someone who knows what their talking about.

  22. This should have been designed as blanket legislation to include the entire country. By the time everyone gets past these worthless posts, the entire country will be at 10% or more unemployed.

My kids are hungry, does anyone have any recipes for rhetoric?

  25. When I say I haven't voted in 30 years, THIS is one of the reasons! Someone said on here 'IS THERE ANYONE RUNNING THE COUNTRY"! The answer for that is that the people YOU all voted into office ARE doing exactly what YOU hired them to do! By definition, a politician's only continuency are the people that give to their campaign and the people that WILL GIVE THEM JOBS WHEN THERE GONE! That is EXACTLY what their doing. You actually think YOUR THE CONTINUENCY! THE REPUBLICRATS RUN THE COUNTRY, in the name of VERY SPECIAL INTERESTS....GIVE PEOPLE A BREAK...GIVE THEM JOBS OR GIVE THEM THE DAMN TIER 5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think we should just dissolve the Republican Party then tier 5 would pass with flying colors. My kids need to eat I need to make a house payment etc. etc. etc. Republicans are un-American they forget they work for the American people not wall street or just the rich.

    ReplyDelete
  27. If the main request of republicans is to use the leftover stimulus money to fund our tier 5 then why aren't the democrats ok with that? What are they saving the 300 billion sitting in leftover stimulus funds for If not this!

  32. You know if we were in another country and hungry America would sure help. These people who have our lives in their hands are very out of touch with reality. They have no clue what it takes for us to survive and that is all we are doing is surviving no extra no anything. What is worse is the attitude they have like we want unemployment, we are being made feel like we are trash. Yes they are making us feel like trash in America, we are begging for what we have paid into our entire lives. Our country is falling apart and all they care about is playing games with our lives.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Please pass this, we really do want to work, we need jobs. What people don't realize is that many won't hire those of us with experience and degrees. . .they would be embarassed to pay us minimum wage, not so with a kid out of high school , pass it fast.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I feel every party is to blame! But the dems want to keep adding to the deficit, and the republicans want it paid for. Our president is just sitting around letting these things happen to the american citizens. If I was an illegal immagrant I would be getting a hand out. Stop the politics as usual and help these people out.

  37. Is there really an America?August 19, 2010 at 5:58 PM

One would think that since you are an American and pay your dues along the way, that you will always have someone looking after your best interest. The American way they would say. Well, the American way is a dream, and the American dream is a picture book that removes the reader from reality. When the flag is flown and the songs are sung, we all get teary eyed. We close our eyes and we have this deep sense of patriotism, but when we open our eyes we realize that America isn't what we would like it to be. In our minds America really is nature, a vision without people, buildings, cars, or anything man-made. America is the 60 seconds at the close of CBS Sunday Morning hosted previously by Charles Kuralt, and now by Charles Osgood. What we see when our eyes are open is everyone in it for themselves, corruption created by power and greed, expectations of government that turn to discouragement. Why can't things get done? I'm sure that we all wouldn't trade countries despite it all and that's why we all feel this way. Maybe one day?

  38. It is difficult to take and beyond understanding why this emergency has not already
been taken care? Voting has never been a priority
and now I know why? Does it really make a difference? This problem is just common sense but, this is not how it is thought of once it hits
the global authority system which isn't helping any of us now?
If it is passed...we can be thankful but,why all of you that have authority did you allow lives to be destroyed and broken before you did
even consider a Tier 5 bill?
What are you waiting for? More lives to be taken, houses to foreclose, homeless, hungry, credit
scores going to ____,? Just gas money to get to a job interview is beyond the thinking of these
    global authoritys?
This is an emergency and it is obvioius so don't throw us a bone like dogs just vote to enact the right humanitarian Tier 5 Bill before
more lives lose everything while your on vacation.

  39. I have not been able to find work and my unemployment benefits expired in June 2010. I live in California, and I am ashamed to say that I had to cash a bad check to feed my family this week. The cable is off, cell phones off, we are using the neighbors internet, the water is going to be shut off Monday, I know I am not alone, what the hell? There is no outside assistance for us, no food stamps, the county is out. No welfare, I don't have kids. I guess I better refine my crimminal skills. Sunk in San Diego

  40. solution! the ones saying we are to lazy to look for work, NEED SHOT IN THE FACE!!! then we can have your jobs :)

  41. I have a Masters degree and 20+ years experience. Before the Banks destroyed our economy I never collected unemployment. I earned 70K at last job - but now can't get a $10/hour job. I am about to become a 99er. Congress is giving hundreds of billions to Foreign dictators, Tax breaks to Wealthiest Americans and Corporations but can't extend unemployment benefits to 99ers? There are not jobs and corporations are sitting on Trillions - AND NOT HIRING. They advertise jobs - but not really hiring until maybe June or whenever...Unemployment benefits need to be given to unemployed until jobs are created in USA. Corporations keep shipping jobs overseas. Boycott foreign made products!! Buy American!
