Could High Unemployment Figures Create Accelerated Tier 5 Unemployment Extension?

An unemployment extension for Tier 5 99ers is needed, and now that the jobless report indicates record numbers of new claims, there should be an accelerated path to the unemployment extension.

Of course, politics at usual will be at play.  We all know that Glenn Beck thinks that the 99ers need to “stop living off their neighbors wallets” and get a job. Easier said than done, Mr. Beck.

Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) has proposed a bill that would extend the unemployment by 20 weeks, and give tax incentives to businesses that hire the long term unemployed. Funding for the bill will be the biggest snafu, as the GOP doesn’t want excess deficit spending and the Democrats won’t use unused stimulus plan funds.

Stabenow’s bill would help states with 7.5% unemployment or higher. There’s a House version of the bill from Shelley Berkley, but that version only helps states with higher than 10% unemployment.

Hopefully the grim jobless outlook will be enough to inspire some quick reactions from the government.  Unfortunately, that may not be the case. However, this is needed now more than ever and the recent data proves that even  more.

  1. 99 weeker here. I lost my job July 08 been looking everyday for a job my family lives on my wife's part time job and unemployment stopped weeks ago.
we need an extension. my lights are going off soon and i have no car insurance anymore due to the loss. I made 38 dollars an hour in my last job so 10 dollar an hour jobs look at my employment history and turn the other way.

  2. This is a pathetic and sad situation to say the least, i know that myself and millions of others of people across the USA are in dire straits without any income and unable to pay all essential bills. The pain is great. The leaders are a bunch of incompetent old fools with money galore, lavish lifestyles and have no idea what the common person is going through. They should all rot in HELL

  3. I lost my job in July '08 also. It went to Mexico. Thanks Clinton. I had been looking and looking. Not even one interview. A relative helped me to get a job in June. That was my first interview in two years and I did get hired. Part-time cleaning bathrooms and offices. From $16.50 an hour to $7.94 an hour. From 55 hrs a week to 20 hrs a week. You do the math. I amm grateful for the job but my bills are the same. I cut back as far as I could so even with this job I can't keep up with all the rising utilities and food. What a great country. Get all those rich old farts out of there. Vote in poor people!!!!

  5. I've been unemployed since October 2008 and I have almost $5000 of benefits left but I have to earn $1880 dollars to qualify for it...MS law. How can I earn $1880 dollars from a job I can't find? But now I'm back in school and I should complete my degree in May 2011...so God I still thank you!!!!
God is faithful and His grace is sufficient!!!

  6. It's time to bring jobs back to America. Tax imported goods and companies that offshore services. It won't make other countries happy but in times like these we have to take care of ourselves first.

  8. Unfortunately even if it does pass, it will be just like the last one. Too much time between extensions causes debt to build up, then by the time it passes and the debt is paid back and the 99er is starting to get on their feet again, the benes run out again. Its a vicious cycle and its purposely done like this to keep the poor poor and the rich getting richer. Eff America, Land of the SLAVES

  10. 'm in the same boat. I was making $96k a year and lost my job in 7/08 also. My profession is HR. If anyone could find a job, you'd think it would be me. WRONG. I have excellent credentials, and can't get one interview. I talked to an HR professional today who said they got 1200 resumes for ONE JOB LISTING in HR! It's like finding a needle in the haystack. I'm ready for bankruptcy. I've used up all of my savings, retirement
    etc.

  12. I'm also a fellow 99er and as I research this terrible situation we are in I comes down to this.
This depression we are in was by design...it didn't just happen. The rich, banks and CEO's have made millions by this depression. The part they didn't plan in this gamble was that it hit harder then expected and job loss is now snowballing out of control and our fearless leaders don't know what to do and hold on to our tax dollars at the same time. The situation is at a head now just in time for the elections. Who will be the biggest lier that won't be held accountable?

  13. YES, WE NEED THE HELP. I am so tired of worrying about how to make ends meet, keep utilities going, etc., stressing, going to agencies for help and they turning me down cause they have to help those lazy women who have NOT worked IN THEIR LIVES, on welfare pay their bills. WE have WORKED and lost our jobs and cannot even get some help but yet they want to help those who are rich and those who will not even try to work. I am tired of the Republicans and I am tired of the democrats that oppose the bill. I could care less about national debt cause I am almost outdoors livintg in my car which will probably get taken away. In the name of Jesus, pass the extension and I sent this email to the White House.

  14. Call, write, email, almost every day ...your senator, your congressman, the White House. I do. No one but us reads these blogs.

  15. The bill should help everybody that has exhausted their benefits not just certain states because the rate goes up and down.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I called the Washington, D C office of each of the 41 Republican Senators to advise---if this Bill is passed---the money we get will be back in the U S Treasury within 1 week as we need these $$$$$$'s to pay for Groceries Utilities and Rent.

The problem is that ASS HOLE Senator Reid will not put this Extension Bill for us 99 ers on the Senate Agenda for Seprember 13, 2010 when Congress re convenes !!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I do not see how the Republicans and that one lone democrat who helped stalled the last bill sleeps at night. I would hate to lay down at night knowing I caused millions of americans to be without. The fact is this, NAFTA needs to be stopped, let these Third World Countries find their own means of survival, everything needs to be made right here in the U.S, and the U.S will be powerful again. They need to continue to give unemployment extensions because its the government fault. They need to continue to give extensions until they create jobs.

  18. The reason for these record numbers of new claims is because 99ers doesnt have money to spend right now, is going to be a vicius circle. If Tier 5 was available 3 months ago , nobody else would lose their jobs . More time going without Tier 5 , more people is going to be fired. Sorry for my grammar , Im drunk jeje. I make my own beer here using left over from a produce nera home. Good luck , I hope Tier 5 is on agenda for Sep 14.
Senate is on vacation now, enjoy live , drinking , eating, relaxing, etc. Now Im depresed and really worry about my family future, I alreday lost my house, one car, etc, Thanks to God I can use Craigslist to sell some shit to make $$$$$, but I dont have nothing else to sell maybe my wife ass is next.

  19. We all know that Glenn Beck thinks that the 99ers need to “stop living off their neighbors wallets” and get a job. Easier said than done, Mr. Beck.

Mr Beck must have failed math. How do 99ers all get jobs if 1 job for every 5 unemployed and that is understated. So even if all 5 do everything to get a job 4 won't get hired. The Media really needs to stop spreading this type of bs when math clearly proves them wrong.

Maybe he should ask congress why sending our neighbors money by the billions to other countries before being used in America or to pay down debt is okay with Congress and Mr Beck.

This country needs to help its own first. We unemployed did not lose our jobs by our fault. Wallstreet and Congress greed did. Yet now 2 years after 08 crash we are no better off with no jobs created.

  20. I've been out of work since April of 08. I've depleted my savings, lost my apt, car, girlfriend and just recently lost my cell phone. I'm fortunate to have friend that let me stay with them. I'm in a world of crap right now. I've never been it a situation where I could not take care of myself. I'm about to lose it.

  21. I laugh at all the comments of the pathetic losers on this website.

Beg! Act like a dog begging for table scraps from people who think you are scum! LOL!

You 99'ers are uneducated and unworthy of most positions available. I hope you all lose your car, house, and even your families.

I enjoy thinking about people like you who have to look their children in the eye and explain why there won't be a Christmas this year. LOL. Sucks to be you!

I will never be in the same boat as you. Your boat is nothing but a sinking ship with an idiot captain who needs to go down with that ship and take their entire family with them.

  22. Maybe Mr. Beck could hire some of us 99ers. It sure is easy for Beck to sit on his high horse and
high paying salary and tell all of us that we are lazy and living off our neighbors. I got news for you Mr. Beck, you are living in a dream world.

Best of luck 99ers, the extension is on its way.

  23. 99er here lost my job 9/08, had my own office managed a staff of 45 people, made 975.00 a week, i have been with no income for a month now and am down to my last dollar literally. I have no idea how im going to pay next months rent or any of my bills. Its sad and unfortunate that this bill still hasnt been passed. Complaining will not solve the issue though, im looking forward to voting in november and am using that as motivation to not do anything stupid beforehand. 13 interviews in 3 months and only one place called me back for a second interview. Once in that interview i was told not to sell my self short but they couldnt afford me even with the 8 dollar and hr pay cut. And yes ive been looking since January of this year and am willing to take jobs i normally wouldnt apply for but they dont even acknowledge my application

  24. I have been unemployed since 07-08, which makes me a 99'r. What it also means I have collected only 99 of over 156 weeks of unemployment. With my personal monies gone, soon to be 59 years old, I don't know if I'll ever see employment again. We need to think about letting us older folks retire. Tier 99 is only a well needed stop gap measure , but not a solution!

  25. For all of you Political HYPOCRITS out there who think that the majority of 99ers who are collecting unemployment because there are no jobs and who are lazy, uneducated, inexperienced, who have no class and most especially no university education or business experience, you are dreadfully wrong and you better think again. From hundreds of resumes that I sent out, I had a number of job interviews from several different employers and I have four college degrees which include two Professional State Certified University Degrees and twenty five years of professional experience. I have a GPA of 3.70 and have been on the Deans list for many years. I also had fifteen years of experience working as a senior electronics engineer and ten years as a professional IT Applications Developer/ Programmer with a spotless work record. I cannot get a job in my area, even though there are jobs advertised. What is wrong with this picture? The only reasona why I never got offered a job for which I was more than qualified for had to do with the fact that I am considered too old over 55+ years old, which is something I cannot do anything about, and not on account of mty formal education or extensive experience for I am the best of the best. Your philosophy and morality reminds me ofthat of the Great Prussian Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. His works called the "Transvaluation of Values" and vision of philosopohy and morality was a realy inspiration to the greatest to one of the most famous leaders of all leaders named "Adolf Hitler". His philosophy and views on morality served as the major philosophy to the German Nazi Party. Very Interesting Story, Read all about it! He believed that there were two types of moralities, the "Master Moralitiy" of noble and free spirits like yourselves who hold high office and think that you are immortal the "slave morality" of the common run of Main Street people. How inhumane, pathethic, rotten, lying and dispicable can you cowards be towards the American people of this country who elected you in good faith to your high office and placed their trust in you! I hope God will forgive you for what you have done to destroy the lives of many innocent people and their families, many of their memebers died and served in the American Armed Forces, on account of your arrogance and greed it is a shame to see them out in the street without a place to live or a job to be had! It really upsets me like a nightmare to read all about all the misery and hell that you put the common Main Street People. Is this really America or is it another nightmare from the past? I hope that you all enjoy your vacations while other suffer. We will remember you come election, that you can be assured of! Enjoy what you have while you can!

  26. Charles Johnson why are you on this blog? Shouldn't you be working? Or are you in your mamas basement waiting for her to call you for supper? Your not a coward? Oh than please go to Queens New York and tell the 300 men who camped out in tents in the cold for not a job but for an application for a job that they're pathetic and don't deserve to feed their families. Feeling all manly now? Im sure they would be more than happy to hear your comments.

  29. Our elected representatives don't have to worry about house payments or utility bills or putting food on the table and they're much to busy taking care of those who take care of them - the big businesses, the lobbyists, and their fellow congressional criminals. If a few of the slaves are suffering, what difference does it make, after all?

  30. I have been unemployed since Nov 07. Worked ever since I could deliver newspapers and babysit. Now, I've tried everywhere including Walmarts, McDonalds, Family Dollars, everything and anything. My unemployment ran out April 6th, and just this week a neighbor "took me under his wing" so I wouldn't be on the street. They need to do something, and they need to do it soon.

  36. It seems incredible that this is such an issue-getting this Tier 5 of extended benefits passed for unemployed Americans. It certainly was ok to spend billions on made-up wars that murder poor, very young Americans,--for huge corporate profits and to spend billions for bailing out banks and foreign countries. These individuals in the US Senate (mostly Republicans) are absolute filth. They should be thrown in the street.

The two work hand in hand government and the Rich corporations...

Meg whitman CEO of ebay made 1.6 billion dollars in her 10 year stint with ebay...

Why do people need this much...?

Schools For Profit , under the APOLLO GROUP , are showing record profits this year...
The CEO are doing well , and so are the exuctives.Remember the GOVT loans that you have to pay back that our by the federal government , you are screwed and the feds will come take your house , and garnish your wages...

Its all about profit these days , the feds give the private sector the loans...CEO gets paid , Executives get Paid , and shares go up...

Welcome to Capitalism , now join us as we bend over and take it...

  39. I agree with the comments about the collecting starting and stopping, I have borrowed money from so many family members who are struggling but know that I am looking so hard for a job. And if they pass a tier 5 I will be thankful but we need jobs and want jobs. I am sick of the comments being passed about the 99ers. I am educated and have a degree and lost my job. As far as Glenn Beck, well he just rattles on for his ratings so that he could have a paycheck. That is just awful of him to say those comments. As far as Charles Johnson, gosh I will pray for you, you are a hateful person, I guess you feel better about yourself because you say these things about others.

  40. I was laid off in Oct 2008 and have moved twice looking for work...NOTHING. I've been told I'm over qualified or my previous salary is too intimidating. Companies would rather hire someone less experienced that they can justify paying less...like my last employer did shortly after I was laid off (fortune 500 bio-tech company laid off 15% staff but still has company funded keggers and carnivals). International outsourcing is the issue here for my industry...have you noticed that it is impossible to get a phone representative located in the US? Shame on you corporate america for using this recession as an excuse to get rid of more expensive employees...who only have those salaries from years of hard work!

  51. It is apparent that the Senate should come back
from Vacation and V0TE for this Tier 5 extension. There comes a time when humanity
has a price and that is keeping a roof over the
people who were hurt by Corporate managers
that keep making profits from shrinking the work
force. The Tier 5 extension will help but its
only for 20 weeks. There should be a 52 week
extension and after that no more ! That gives
people a year to find a job or be retrained for
a new job. How much would it cost 10% of the
bank bailout $ One Trillion dollars so if we
spend $100 billion to keep people afloat until
Corporations start hiring. Lets face it 17 million people are out of work ! You can't get
17 million people jobs in 20 weeks ! The tax
collected will be put back in State income tax and we need job growth at a State Level. Business can't make money unless people buy
products. Tier 5 52 weeks and done. Training
a must! Corporate tax breaks a must ! Lets go
America Put some money back into the American's
    homes of the unemployed.
