Gotthard Base Tunnel PHOTOS

Gotthard base tunnel photos are desired, as it was announced today that the longest tunnel in the world has been completed - well, at least the digging of the tunnel. This comes days after the announcement that the Hoover Dam bridge has been constructed.

The Gottard Base Tunnel will be a rail tunnel, and is a whopping 35 miles long. The construction of the tunnel isn't expected to be completed until 2015, but that date could be extended out if problems are experienced.

The tunnel will shave the commute from Zurich to Milan to 2 hours and 40 minutes. Furthermore, it will also accommodate up to 4,000 ton freight trains. The rail above the mountain takes up to 3 freight trains at a time, of up to 2,000 tons each.

Here are a couple of photos about the Gotthard Base Tunnel photos and a video about how the drilling of the tunnel is completed.
