In some respects, the true answers may never be known. The government claims that the contrail which appeared to look like a missile launch was really a passenger jet from LAX heading to Phoenix.

If that was the case, then why wasn't the flight identified the first day of the sighting? After all, they claimed that air traffic controllers didn't have a flight plan for that area, that NORAD said there was no credible foreign threat, and the Pentagon initially had no reports that the US military set off a missile.
