Political: Unemployment Extension, Tier 5, 99ers, & Nancy Pelosi

The unemployment extension, tier 5, & 99ers could be ignored as Congress enters the lame duck session. Nancy Pelosi recently spoke out to the jobless desiring unemployment extensions, saying that those who spurned democrats shouldn't count on extensions of unemployment from the GOP.

The GOP has been against the tier 5 movement, but not because they don't want to dole out unemployment benefits. The Republicans want to "trim the fat" off the government's budget, get back to the basics, and ensure that any spending bills are backed with either complimentary budget cuts or tax revenues to pay for any benefits.

In some respects, it's not a bad idea to ensure that we are paying for unemployment extensions now. After all, we don't want to give future generations too much of a burden, do we?

That being said, the unemployment extension and tier 5 benefits need to be passed. Jobless need to make it clear that the new politicians in office will be held to the same standards we held the politicians who were voted out. No jobless benefits, no job creation, and no unemployment extension means that the house will have no job come 2012.

  1. Please pass the tier 5. Cut spending somewhere else. We bail out wall street, car dealers and this war that has gone on for years and don't forget Haiti. Help the people not wall street and car dealers.

  2. Listen here! They keep talking about extending the current people that are receiving unemployment benefits. A real extension is to add more weeks of benefits to the people that have reached the maximum weeks which is 99 weeks in states with the highest unemployment rate. All they're doing is keeping the existing program going. They aren't adding any weeks or extending benefits. Use your head people! This is how they try to confuse us and the media. It was the same trick they used back in the summer when they said they passed an extension. What a bunch of fools to believe them and their games. There's no extension here! The maximum 99 weeks of unemployment was already put in place. If it goes past 99 weeks, then that's what a real extension put in place would be. They're trying to keep the existing people on their first two or three tiers feeling as if they're doing something for them when they're actually not at all. This is all a big game that is being played on the unemployed! Really think about this.

  4. FINANCIAL GENOCIDE. The economic death of MILLIONS of Middle Class families who beleived in the work ethic that sustained our nation for generations have come to realize that they were nothing more than pawns in a rich mans game. With the holidays coming that brought us together, Congress may turn their backs on the families who will lose everything they worked for, and languish in poverty, an despair. MILLIONS of families is of biblical proportions. Bread lines, food banks, shelters for the former middle class is surely the Great American Tragedy.

  9. To "listen here carefully people", I have to agree with you on some levels of what you are saying regarding the Tier 5 extension, it is a game to the government, but adding extensions to those currently still within their 99 weeks of extensions is also important, we too are folks that need extensions currently to survive, as well as when our extensions run out...and many of us are coming eerily close to that 99 week line. I encourage congress to pass current extensions, as well as proposing and passing a Tier 5 extension...we are ALL going to need it here soon!!! I think voting Republicans back into office is not going to make it easy for ANYONE on unemployment compensation benefits right now unfortunately...they have been against all of it Tiers 1-5 all along...good choice America!!! Hopefully something will happen in the lame duck, or I can certainly kiss everything I have worked my whole life for goodbye, and thats unfortunate for anyone and everyone in America.

  10. Please HELP me & my family. I live in Queens, N.Y. & is proud to say that
I worked 30 straight years in a row until 2008 when the economy went
south. I look very hard for work each day & still cannot even find a
temporary job. Please make sure the Tier 5 extension of unemployment
insurance is approved of because without it my family will be homeless in
a very short time. We won't be able to put food on the table or pay the
rent if this is not approved of. I went through my pension & 401K plan
over the past 2 years just to keep a roof over our head. There is nothing
left now. Unfortunately there are many people like me who worked in the
Banking Industry & have lost there jobs. The economy seems to be getting
worse. I represent millions of 99er's who will have nothing if this isn't
passed. We will go homeless thanks to nothing we did. Dying in the streets
is a horrible death to endure. Why are we forgotten ? Please allow us to live.

  11. OK, I'm in Tier One. I'll barely qualify for Tier Two - if I understand the way it works. If they don't extend the deadline, I'll be finished after Tier Two. So, by extending the deadline to apply for further Tiers, it does help the people out there - like me - who havn't reached the 99 week max. Yes, it won't help the 99'ers, and there are more and more of them each week, which I've very sad about. But to say that extending the deadline isn't helping anyone or doing anything to help is incorrect.

  15. I to am unemployed and I am counting on our politicians to extend the extensions. I sit daily trying to figure out what they were thinking when they allowed our jobs to leave our country..... No work,No money to spend, Not much taxes made on unemployment, But it truly appears this was done to get the rich richer and the poor poorer... In Indiana most of our politicians think we get to much money on unemployment and are going to try to cut the amount we get.... What a joke......... I would like to see them lose everything after working so many years and be able to do any more than survive on what we get........ Being unemployed is so degrading and so is being under employed after awhile you lose HOPE, your self-esteem bottoms out... and then you have politicians tell you they are taking away your survival ... All we really want is JOBS ........... So continue the extensions Until they can get JOBS........ Not temporary jobs .......... But REAL JOBS .......... the kind that we can survive on and continue to pay taxes on so our States are not bankrupting the unemployment systems......... VOTE YES ON THE EXTENSIONS..........

  17. No extension is coming in any form, and I am one of the millions who can't find work either in fact I am in that highest percentage of workers who can't find work because I am in my 60's. But I am not going to see another extension anytime soon if ever. But thank God I am old enough to collect social security. My heart goes out to those who simply can't find work. Stop feeling so left out and stop blaming yourself. You did not cause this nor did you ask for it either. Stand up and be an adult and voice your situation in a way that will help and here on this website is not the place. Having said that what do we do. Take this into the streets all across America in front of every state house in every capital and yes even to DC. The media will not take up your plight because they are too afraid to. Remember it only takes a spark to start a forest fire. We are the middle class of America and we are the ones who put those clowns in office and we are the ones who can take them out as well. Take it to the streets folks in any form you can with as many as you can and for Gods sake organize. Nothing is going to happen to help the millions until you get the attention it deserves. Have you not seen the news coverage of the cruise ship stalled off Mexico it went on for four days non stop, is your situation any less important. No its worse much worse so why don't news media report on your situation, its simple they do not want to be the spark that starts the fire. And at this point it does not sell well to advertisers well. Why because unemployed people don't buy their products, its that simple. But the one thing they can't ignore is millions in the streets marching in DC and every city all across America. two or three million voices is just not something you can ignore.

  20. I feel all of you pain. I am faced with only having 4 weeks of unemployment left. I won't even make it to the 99 weeks as others have. I have gone from living in an apartment to renting a room and a hotel by the week. At the beginning of December I will be forced to live in my car. At that point I will have 2000 dollars left to my name. Money that was going to be used for my first months rent and security on an apartment. I have sold everything I own except my car which I have a bank loan on that I continue to pay. I have filled hundreds of applications only to recieve on job offer and that was to be paid 1 cent a copy for scanning medical documents. That doesn't even equal minimum wage or pay for the gas that it would cost me to drive the 50 miles one way to do the job. I am 50 years old and feel like a total waste. I am starting to believe that they just want all of us to disappear. Does anyone know and Island forsale where we can pool our remaining funds and buy it. We could form our own country declare war on the US and then they could support send us money like they do all the other countries. Just a thought

  27. I am a "99er". I exhausted my 99 weeks back in April 2010. Since then it has been beans and potatoes to eat without being able to break back into the job market. I have had several interviews, that decisions dragged on for months with some mid level Human Resources person making the life and death decisions as it relates to a position. Now I don't know where to turn. If a government can cover up a missle launch off the coast of California and virtually no demands by the populace for full disclosure of what happened...how can I possibly put my faith in the government of the United States. I have anticipated real news of a Tier 5 extension for months. My health has failed. I am 58. My children are nervous wrecks to see what it has done to their dad. My wife cries every night and cannot sleep without anxiety. I no longer believe in Barack Obama. I don't even think he speaks well anymore and I am not a fan of his traveling wife and family. He has screwed up the country to the point that now he has even lost the momentum he gained in the election to the Republicans. I am currently a Republican. I am confused about how to express my complete exhaustion at trying to survive during this depression. Not recession. President Obama stop talking, start listening to your desperate citizens and give them a small percentage of the time and attention you give to Wall Street, the war, the car manufactures and help save the middle class. Unfortunately, I can no longer support either side of this government. My hopes are shattered. My family is destroyed. I have lost my house and my possesions. The United States of America is just a myth. While we burn in the heartland, Obama, the Democrats, the Republicans and the Independents in Government are just "Fiddleing". I am not sorry for myself. I am sorry for what once was my beautiful country and ashamed of the fools that are running it. You want a place to cut to cover the extensions? How about pulling every single soldier out of war and put them on our own borders, stopping every cent given in foriegn aid,and instead help the people who tried to make this country great in the past. I would suggest that we all pray as well. I think only God is listening and only God can help us. Amen.

  30. TIME FOR THE GREAT REVOLUTION OF 2010November 12, 2010 at 1:19 PM

    *************************************************

Hey Folks hopefully we all realize by now that it did not matter who got voted for what. They are all evil and corrupt and make their Big Money being bribed, by "lobbyist" to pass laws for years now for companys to outsource and move out of the country. When everything crashed, what few jobs that were left in America can-not substain current unemployment levels. You people can call Washington all you want to cause they will not do anything about it. They are not going to change the root of the proplem until they are FORCED to. And if they pass anything in the bastards Lame Dick session, it will only be a short lived band-aid. We need to start protesting, rioting and whatever it takes in all major cities across America if we want REAL CHANGE and the jobs to return. If the Goverment announced they were going to cut-off food stamps and welfare checks the 1st week of December do you not think there would by massive riots all across the United States. So what makes our situation any different?

  31. Guys! You are not going to be cut off!!! Every state will get the maximum weeks of unemployment benefits! Listen here carefully my people if you really have a hard time understanding the trick here! They keep talking about extending the current people that are receiving unemployment benefits. A real extension is to add more weeks of benefits to the people that have reached the maximum weeks which is 99 weeks in states with the highest unemployment rate. 32. If a Tier 5 doesn't pass, they shouldn't extend any of the current benefits in place, remember we are out of of the recession, California seems like a dry place for private jobs sector growth, I would them rather create job incentives then have my hand out and depend on these GOP crooks, therefore I could raise money and move to China. Republicans in congress will cause a stalemate till 2012 unless Democrats pass Bush Tax Cuts, so good luck.

I know of someone taking advantage of all the extensions that he has received and has not bothered to look for work until now. His 99 weeks are almost up. I understand the economy is terrible but there has to be some incentive to want to get off the system or there is going to be people that will take advantage. I don't know how you can stop that 100% but people that are able to work should be required to work after there initial 26 weeks are up. My 2 cents

They mentioned nothing about any program beyound 99 weeks. What they are talking about is more Jobs. So, If your middle aged and you have lost everything you own, due to outscourcing, how do you get on? I dont understand the mindset of this government? In RI, all of the Tim Hortens coffee shops have closed. No notice, just signs on the door. So that many more people will be signing up on the ui payroll. A woman, in an suv, stopped a pedestrian to ask for directions, when the lady stopped to give her the directions, the woman in the suv grabbed her bag and dragged her from behind her vehicle. The inocent lady broke her collar bone. The violance and tension is rising. Banks are being robbed. WOW! How much more tragidy is this government going to let go on? When is it NOT against the law to induce domestic violance on your own people?
We have 3 days left until congress gets back from yet another tax paid vacation. I think it will be plain to see that if an extension isnt passed then it wasnt the plan from the beginning. What will we hear next on the news about violance? This is scarey because i know what some people are capable of specially when it comes to the babies. For our sake and yours, Please pass tier 5!
BTW!!! I spoke to Big Daddy Mommy and she is going to punish Big Daddy for all his heartless comments. He will then pass it onto his friends Mr. Crabtree and Tony. She expresses yet another apoligy on her sons behalf. She also said she is pulling for you. :)

I'm a good worker; but no one seems to care about that. I'm middle aged, maybe that's it; well you have to live a bit to get experience right? So not everyone is sitting on their ASS! In fact I believe most people would rather WORK! AND I agree with the post regarding riots, and an increased crime rate. The government better get it together create jobs, more tax breaks to those creating jobs, small business SOMETHING or there is going to be too many desperate people out there for them to deal with. Voting themselves raises, giving money to other countries, and shipping jobs overseas has GOT to stop, find a way to get those businesses back! People are loosing their homes everything they have worked for their whole lives, families are having to move in together to survive... Pretty soon those doing the robbing won't be able to get anything from their neighbors, they'll have to go somewhere else or do something else, and what do you think THAT will be hummmm! What ever it is won't be good!

  61. Barbarella needs to get a life and get off her big butt and get a job, instead of wasting her time. The time she is wasting trying to organize a jail sentence, is the time she should be looking for work. Prime example of a lazy 99whiner.

  70. For those who say that the unemployed are just lazy. How does that work when there is 1 job for every five. If a room has 1 chair in it, and 5 people are in the room. Do you say that everyone standing must not want to sit in the chair? Then add the twist that in order to sit in that chair you need to be a RN who has 3-5 years experience in the ER. The chair may be empty and all five might desperately want to sit in it.
I wish it were true that all these unemployed are there by choice, just being lazy. That would mean that there are tons of job openings not being filled cause everyone is just to lazy. I would have work and not be a broke 99er and I could take down the extension cord running to my neighbors so I can have a light and my PC. YES I work for the extension cord and I work off my rent at $4/hr because landlord knows that is my only option. I have no job but work my ass off 3 days a week to be broke, hungry and sit in my cold house emailing resumes. IM not allowed to work more than my rent so I cant even afford to eat lunch. Maybe if I had a tier five I could pay my rent, the landlord would stop having the option to abuse me and hire me or another electrician. Dont say that im just lying on the couch doing drugs waiting for handouts. And yes if MD's would hire me I could relax on the couch, be lazy and not be hungry all the time.
If they cant pass tier 5 then maybe they should get rid of the minimum wage and some sweat shops will open up giving us jobs. This lazy ass 99er doesnt mind working for 4/hr if he has to, I just would like to get 4 dollars in actual money at the end of every 40 hour week. In reality if MD's wont hire me for being over quailied then the sweat shops wont hire. I guess my only hopes are JOBS and sadly tier 5.

  73. You missed his point. Yes, there may be plenty of jobs for RNs. However, if that is not your field, you don't have the training or years of experience, you're SOL. By the way, here in NYC, they're closing hospitals right and left.

    ReplyDelete

Don't know if you are a person that prays; but I am and even tho I'm liable to be right there with ya very soon, I've gotta try to keep the faith, something will work out, it has to. I'll keep you in my prayers specifically along with the whole country :)

  78. MD's = MacDonalds. refering to fast food places in general.

and mr medical, I was just making an example. My point being if there is a job, not everyone may qualify for it. It really had nothing to do with nursing. Learn to read

  79. OH I forgot to mention the chair is black. That also has nothing to do with me being an RN so...

  80. They bailed out the banks and General Motors and just like my late father said to me once... Son, the republicans are out to screw the working man. Really, 20 some odd years after hearing him say that, I think BOTH parties are at fault... My fellow americans the only way to rid D.C. of the plight of big money corruption is with BULLETS not BALLOTS! My unemployment benefits will cease on Dec. 4th, roughly 15 or 16 weeks shy of 99 weeks. I look for work everyday. I'm supposed to list 4 job hunt activities everytime I claim my weeks. I've been hard-pressed to find 4 jobs to apply to! The last call back I had was Feb. of last year, the poor guy wants to hire me, but he doesn't have enough work. It's just not right. This country isn't for and by the people anymore... It's for the $$$ and to hell with the people.

  82. TRIM THE FAT? Maybe the fat should be trimmed from the salaries, pensions and vacations of those politicans that continually vote no to a tier 5. If just one the politicians had to survive and feed their children without any income, due to no fault of their own, see how fast there would be a tier 5.

  85. When is this country going to wake UP? We are bought a paid for by the rich. We are never going to get anymore good paying jobs in this country. Big business don't want Americans they want more money and send jobs overseas. This election was bought and paid for by them. The average american no longer is going to be able to have a life like we want or in fact what we want our children to have. And now that they got the GOP in office it going to be a smooth road ahead for the rich. When they say we need to cut the Deficit that only means cutting programs that will help the poor. There is no concern about deficit when it's for the rich. But of course we voted their people right back into office after 8 years of spending that ruin almost ruin this country. Yet people blamed Obama. Now I just want to see where the republicans are going to help anyone unemployed. Oh you are going to see some extension but it's going to cost this country big. Just by extending the Bush tax cut for the rich top 2% it will cost us 70 billion a year. So that mean they won't beable to afforded any unemployment extension for the million who are going to lose or have lost their unemployment. So that if you think they are going to help any of us sorry.GO on Welfare that's what they want. No middle class just the poor so they can control everyone. Good Bye America you use to be a great country when it was controled by the people not the corporations and the rich.

  86. The major reason why we lost jobs? Not becuase of small percentage of Outsourcing ( I mean Computer jobs). If one analyses the percentage of total jobs lost to percentage of outsourcing, it may give clear idea, that we lost many clerical, accounting, and manufacturing jobs. All these jobs are lost becuase of HEAVY IMPORTS FROM CHINA, which is dumping from toilet role to TV. Once the greedy REPUBLICANS puts halt on these basic imports, perhaps manufacturing jobs can be reestablished, thus we generate more jobs and no body would be interested to depend on unemployment insurance. I THINK EVERY ONE SHOULD PUT PRESSURE ON THE POLITICIANS TO BRING A LAW THAT WILL STOP IMPORTS OF MAJOR BASIC THINGS WE ALL USE.

  87. Pound The Pavement guys. Do you really think that 1 job for every 5 is real? HA. Pound The Pavement and life will be good. We dont need extensions, as soon as every lazy drug smoking unemployment sucking person gets off the couch, the jobs will come. Its not the economy, its not the goverment. I actually made a pavement pounding machine. The first day I started it up I had over 30 phone calls for interviews. This pavement pounding is so awesome, such a simple solution to all are problems. Why didnt anyone think of this earlier.

  88. Haha

  100. This is a crime....I am all for helping other people but this country spends too much money helping other countries in need..our government goes above and beyond reasonable when it comes to helping other countries... and do so without hesitation or blinking an eye.... But what about the American people???? Why is it necessary to debate and argue about helping the American people who voted them into congress/office???? I too have worked all my life and in 4 weeks ( week 56) stand to lose my benefits with no job in sight and after hundreds of resumes sent out...Republicans/ Democrats/ Tea party all need to take a good hard look at themselves as humans never mind politicians......It shouldn't be a vote about money but about saving lives.....

  101. The GOP is not viscally responcible in the slightest all they are doing is covering their ass with denial of any true responce to the deficit. It shouldnt take a genious to figure out that unemployment for 2million folks will in FACT stimulate the economy and TAX cuts for the wealthy adds 700billion to the deficit period end of story . To the putz that keeps commenting about nancy pelosi " if you get your head out of glenn becks ( or wichever fox journalist dropout you follow) ass you might realize there is NO way she is blocking the unemployment extensions you friggin idiot ! She is stating dont get your hopes up because there is not a damn thing that can be done with a GOP filibuster ! Which will happen no doubt !
