Unemployment Extension 2010 - 99ers, Tier 5 And Christmas

The unemployment extension 2010 is on the minds of many. The 99ers are going to have a difficult time this holiday season if the extensions are not passed. Back in the spring when the previous extensions expired, Congress dragged their feet and 2.5 million Americans experienced a lapse in benefits.

This time, it can happen again, and amid the holiday season. Last week, the "fast-track" for the House version of the emergency benefits failed in the House. Even if it would have passed, it would have faced an uphill battle in the Senate, where the GOP has threatened to block the measure.

Many of the unemployed are hoping that the Democrats and Republicans will be able to cut a deal with each other, trading the unemployment benefits extension for the extension of Bush era Tax Cuts. However, with the GOP's Pledge to America and the Democrats licking their wounds from the aftermath of the 2010 elections, that could be difficult.

In many respects, the economy requires the passage of the unemployment extension for the holiday season. The current proposal would extend benefits until February 28th - at which point it's questionable if any further action would be taken, considering the GOP's majority in both the House and the Senate.

  1. I have sold everything that I didn't absolutely need to get my kids through so far. I am using my friends PC, and we might be homeless soon. I went to a local factory that was hiring.. About 15 minutes later they pushed everyone away and said they can't accept any more applications..

I hope something happens soon. I am also a recent college graduate and even a degree isn't helping. I am in debt with student loans. Just a BIG mess!!

  2. The government needs to step in at some point to force companies to hire again. Now that alot of companies out there can cut down on overhead and still survive, they are not hiring back for those positions they cut. In addition, I know that a large company has just signed contracts to outsource overseas, and is planning major layoffs. This has to stop!

  12. My comment is this both parties are to blame because the democratic party sold out the 99ers this summer when we were no included in the last extension of benefits in july 2010. Obama and the democratic party has had the votes necessary to ram a incomplete but necessary health
care bill through congress and it his hard to believe that pit bill Nancy Pelosi and Ice Cream man Harry Reid could not figure out a way to pass a tier 5 till this critical point, we had a excellent bill S3706 that not only would have extended unemployment but would have provided tax credits to businesses that hired the long term unemployed.

The repercussions is going to be civil unrest and a raise in the crime rate and shoplifting. No parent worth there salt on there bread wants to see his children or family starve and that where we as a country are at! Obama better but on heavier boots and push the republicans back a little farther, how can we as a government pay 8 billion dollar a month or day for a way, find 700 billion dollars in tax cuts for the rich with no federal budget offsets and borrow that money and go into deficit and can’t find the money for the starving middle class and here’s the game why not pay for it with budget cuts or unspent stimulus funds, so the democrats are just as bad as the republicans there just not as openly biased as the repulican bigots are!

The funny thing about the whole matter is the republican look in the camera with the same sick excuse that unemployment extensions and tier 5 will balloon the budget and with the same breath will balloon the budget not paid for to give taxes cuts to the wealthiest Americans who already said that they could never every spend all there money. With that said its time to start marching on Washington D.C and make these phoney congressman answer and put some fear in this demi gods stir the pot and make them accountable, pull them from there lofty laughing chair and let the millionaires know who voted them in and will take them out, by any means necessary!

  19. The reason they would not vote the fast track to extend unemployment (aside from thwarting the Democratic party) is because they want to tie extending the unemployment to keeping the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy. And why would that be? Because they ARE the wealthy!! It’s like voting to continue to give them more money. The next thing you know, they’ll be voting themselves raises. Now THAT’S what is important to them, their money, the management of their wealth and their friends’ wealth. They could care less about the people in this country who are suffering so long as everything remains status quo or improves for them; and of course, what Boehner wants is to make sure that Obama does not get a second term, and pretty much the he** with unemployed America on every count.

  31. Fed officials project that unemployment won't change much this year, averaging between 9.5 percent and 9.7 percent. The current unemployment rate is 9.6 percent. Progress in reducing unemployment has been "disappointingly slow," the central bank said, according to the minutes of its Nov. 2-3 meeting.

By the time of 2012 re-election so many will be homeless, lost homes and still unemployed in poverty. We seem to ignore reality of not helping unemployed. We won't be turning around unemployment for years yet. At least not in 2011 for sure. History shows it takes more then a few years to make things better. Never ignore that. Many states will have more and more homeless and poverty. More foreclosures if we don't figure out that is cheaper to pay UI until unemployment comes down under 7% in a state. We are not saving money by thinking 99 weeks is enough. It will cost us in lives and more money if we don't help as long as it takes. We fight wars to save lives but so willing to cut people off who need help. That will cost us more lives then any 9/11 did. Plus cost this country more then what paying UI would. Please come to your senses and do some math.

WASHINGTON – Federal Reserve officials have become more pessimistic in their economic outlook through next year and have lowered their forecast for growth.

The economy will grow only 2.4 percent to 2.5 percent this year, Fed officials said Tuesday in an updated forecast. That's down sharply from a previous projection of 3 percent to 3.5 percent. Next year, the economy will expand by 3 percent to 3.6 percent, the Fed said, also much lower than its June forecast.

  48. This is all very good. So, the economy has shrunk, jobs have disappeared, and big business gets bailed out.

So, it seems everyone on State Extended Benefits gets cut off on December 4th. Bet that unemployment rate drops from 9.9% to, uh, um… well, probably next to nothing.

Hmmm… Been unemployed for 21 months. Laid off as an Executive Assistant. There have been MONTHS when there were no positions to apply to. I have several agencies looking for me as well. They have a day or a week of temporary work, here and there, but nothing permanent.

I had one agency tell me “no one is looking for what you’re offering. You have a diverse depth and breadth of experience in different fields. Most employers want either 1)someone with very little experience so they can “mold” them or, 2)someone with 10 years in the same field (manufacturing, medical, etc.). Oh, and when they see your resume, they say ‘toooo expensive’. Oh, and the four year degree you just got, means nothing, absolutely nothing.”

So, in my 40s, at the top of my game and now I’m too experienced, cost to much, and am considered non-maleable.

Well, shoot me now, it’s all over.

BTW, what does one do to pay the bills when unemployment runs out? I have no clue. I’ve never known anyone who was in this position. I will continue to work temporary assignments, but they likely will cover just the gas to get to and from them. Do I live in the street? It’s awfully cold here in Cleveland in the winters. It’s not like I have anywhere else to go.

Ha. This seems like a joke – a sick joke. These should be some of the best years of my life: the “power earning” years… what a load of crap.

  49. This will be the first time in 35 years of hard work and paying taxes that our family won't be able to have a Christmas or Thanksgiving. We are on the verge of losing our home also. We need the tier 5 extension and need it fast if we are to have any chance of surviving and finding work. The government needs to help those who built this country and paid all those taxes for all those years. Why isn't the government helping us instead of other countries, etc. We need help at home and we need it now. Politicians, put away your egos and serve the people who put you in office!

  50. You make a lot of sense 11:32. Sadly,we have come to the reality that our sickening and disgusting government officials have shown cold indifference to those victimized by their evil greed, and rich supporters whose money tricked us into voting for them. Those dirty politicians are good actors, but now the truth is out. We are PAWNS IN A RICH MANS GAME. For those who do not play chess... a pawn is a board piece than can be sacrificed to gain a better position.
Many of us are a little too young for social security, and at the age where discrimination is rampant. That means losing your belongings to get cash then, then defaulting on loans, and eventually being totally broke and seeking welfare. And young educated workers are now an exploited desparate job seeker. What a pity....middle class to poverty. As 10:28 said, we have to dig deep to realize our self worth, and promote whatever we have as individuals if findinga job seems hopeless. Maybe hopeless is the wrong word. There should always be hope ifwe believe in ourselves, and have some love in our lives. The American Dream may be fading, but we have the abiltity to remain in the place where dreams are born.

  57. I have read so many of the tier 5 unemployment extension blogs. I am a 99 who has been out of a job since June 2008. Sickens me when people say "get a job"...My question is...What the hell do you think I have been doing? I sure in the hell don't like living below poverty levels. My unemployment ran out in June. If it wasn't for friends helping me..I don't know where I would be. The well runs dry though with friends or family helping. I have never been in this situation EVER before of being unable to find a job. For those of you out there who think we are lazy and aren't looking....I trust you have not had a job loss during this time frame of the past couple of years. It isn't the same as it was years back. There are no jobs out there. If you happen to find one....trust me....they have so many applications trying for this position that you get lost in the pile. Networking isn't even helping me and believe me, I know a lot of people. So for those out there thinking the 99ers are just looking for a handout....you are way off base there buddy. We are trying to survive and feed our families. Buying Christmas presents isn't our main concern...we just want to be able to get our rent paid, utilities paid, put food on the table.....hell...I would love to be able to start getting the newspaper again. My phone will be turned off here soon because don't have the money to pay. So think before you put us down when you may have a job and don't worry about the basics. Walk in our shoes where we are looking for a job just about everyday and just don't hear anything back from the employer. I just hope and pray someday you don't go into work and are told we don't need you anymore...security will walk you to the door. Don't sit there and think it can't happen to you...because it happens EVERY DAY NOW~~~~ I still try to hold on to HOPE.....that is all I have right now. So don't put us down...MOST are trying very hard to find a job. I can't begin to tell you how many times I have called friends and said I have no idea how anyone would want to live like this...wondering if you can pay your power bill, keep your phones on for contacts, just the basics are beginning to become impossible to handle right now. I pray for a job yesterday and for all of the others out there struggling. Shame on all you others who think you are mightier than all of us because you are the fortunate one going to a job everyday. We use to be fortunate as well working.

  59. Sure there are those who are milking the system but a vast majority have too much to lose to play those games. We are the ones who can't get a job. Our credit is shot and now that businesses require credit checks we have no shot at getting any jobs. We are so desparate we appky for anything but agian they are shunning us. How can the employed have the gaul to say we aren't looking and are lazy. They are the pathetic and heartless souls to even be on these sites to harass us and make us feel worse than we do already. We too may have thought that about the poor and unemployed at one time too and never thought we would be in this situation. And we never thought that our experience would hinder us from finding a new job either. Would you want to sit on your ass and lose your homes and cars and everything you own? Didn't think so. So why do you assume we do? So until you walk in our shoes butt out and MYOB. This is a grueling situation we have been thrust into and we are desparate to do what we have to to survive. We are at our wits end and just how do we survive if we can't get ANY job no matter how little it pays. We are worried sick and it gets worse daily. We need something here.

  73. The majority of American workers have worked hard, paid taxes, been law abiding, raised their families to be good citizens. Now many of us are out of work and loosing all we have worked for because our country has shifted it's priority to big business. Big Business used to need us but they don't now because of sending our jobs to other countries or giving jobs to foreign people. We worked for our security and freedom--it is being given to others and taken away from us. It makes no difference what color our skin is or what religion we practice--If you were born into American working class people, and you have been a honest-to-goodness red-blooded-American WHY SHOULD YOU BE TREATED LIKE A CRIMINAL? That is the way I am feeling, are others feeling this way too? What can we do to get right again? All the comments about being out of money, utilities off, loosing cars and homes--How many of us are there? The numbers can't be showing all of us cause I have not been allowed to even get unemployment money since I was pushed into resigning-which is one of the tactics used by corporations to cut jobs without any cost to them. Enough from old, good-for-nothing-lazy me--put us all on icebergs and let us die so we won't cost anything! Wealthy America would love this huh?

  74. My family is in bad need of help from the Replublicans to get this extension passed until Feb or so, we need to get through the holidays then they can cut me off if they so well please, my family might even fall apart if we cant get through the holidays, please somebody help us.

  78. Babies are weak and helpless. They cry until they go to sleep, wake up again and cry until they are attended to. Our mealy mouthed reps see the unemployed as babies waiting for a bottle. They see the unemployed as helpless children with their hands out. We are not childrenm but as long as we keep crying and not acting like adults, we will be treated as children, and put in our place. Enough of this blog bitching and moaning. Show our government by not letting up with your dissent and intorerance for such unacceptable behaviour. Congress has stepped over the line. Enough already. Thanksgiving has very little meaning this year, except that we are alive, and have those who love us.

  80. I think the only mistake that is made on this site and other sites is that people think others care. Obama does not show interest in the people. He would be up there talking to everyone. It takes more than throwing something out there and getting rejected and then leaving it up to a 1/2 completed job by Pelosi. He doesn't have enough fighters. All those people with negative comments are going to whine and cry when the bottom falls out from under them. At least we've been out there fighting back for our rights. Try UWAG site.

  82. I don't think Republicans mean white. What's that about? Republicans are wealthy millionaires that were able to strategize and take over to make more money. It's about their greed and control. They are creating tyranny. People won't take it when it reaches a boiling point.

  83. TO Anonymous:November 24, 2010 2:58 PM, who wrote the unemployed are idiots because they said that the republicans turned down the extension. Well, the democrats still have the majority vote, the new congress do not take over until JAN. Oh! by the way I watch the news and read the papers and not believe half of it. There was an event in Iraq and I was there and the news reported exactly the opposite of what happened, I guess because it sounded better the way they reported it, than the truth.

  89. People often delude themselves into believing that America is a caring just nation. It's not. It's simply a jungle environment that strives to avoid responsibility for the pollution it generates, the lack of education, the lack of medical insurance. The American priorities (what we voluntarily spend our money on) include - pulp celebrity magazines (we'd much rather spend money reading about some (in)famous person than spend that money on new roads or infrastructure). Other American priorities include buying expensive sports or music tickets (even high priced scalped ones), beer, cigarettes, etc. Of course, now we even have an unimaginable debt (thank you george bush - where were all you people who complain about the obama debts when bush eviscerated the surpluses clinton generated?). America is in decline, other countries are now rising because of our bad decisions. Considering how we treat our poor, unemployed, elderly, I'd say it's about time another group of countries became the world leaders. We sure don't deserve it....

  94. Looks like Obama just paid for the unemployment extension by freezing federal employees pay for 2 years. Here is an excerpt of the news today.

The two-year freeze would apply to all civilian federal employees, including those working at the Department of Defense, but would not affect military personnel. The freeze is expected to save more than $5 billion in savings over two years, $28 billion over five years and more than $60 billion over 10 years, White House officials said.

That would more than pay for the needed extended unemployment benefits. I think that the tax cuts for the rich should have a freeze on them as well. If the Republicans are serious about reducing the deficit instead of just creating a smokescreen to keep the rich richer and happy, then they will pass this bill. Good move Obama. No more excuses from Republicans, pass the bill for extended unemployment its paid for.

If your between the ages of 45 and 62, and you're a 99er' - you're screwed! Hopefully you've kept the weight off, because you're going to have to start whoring to keep a roof over your head and some food on the table!

These m****r f*****s can send millions and billions to other countries for incentives for these jackasses to come over here and attend colleges. That's just one example, if you google it you can find a s**t load of ways money is being funneled out of this country. People are starving, losing their homes, can't buy medications they need, and the list goes on. Who is listening? These politicians don't give a shit about the people they are supposed to be representing. I'm at the point that I don't give a fuck anymore. I'm going to provide for my children no matter what. If I have to take it, then so be it. So give yourselves another pay raise you piece of shit politicians, I'm going to have to go out and take mine.

  104. To all you idiots saying that the unemployed get a free handout, are you kidding you dumbass. You have to pay taxes on it just as if it were a job. And you people who say we lazy, your right, we all want to sit at home, make less than half of what we used to and watch as things get turned off one by one. I would be more than happy to send you my spreadsheet of all the jobs that I have applied for and heard back from in the last two years. I have two degrees, worked since I was 16 and even graduated from high school, do you know what some places told me. I was overqualified. Oh I'm sorry, I thought education was important. So to all you jerks telling us to get off our lazy asses and get a job, do me a favor, quit yours so one of us can have it.

  105. Blood alone moves the wheels of history! Have you ever asked yourselves in an hour of meditation, which everyone finds during the day, how long we have been striving for greatness? Not only the years we’ve been at war, the war of work !! But from the moment, as a child, when we realized that the world could be conquered. It has been a lifetime struggle. A never-ending fight. I say to you, and you will understand, that it is a privilege to fight! We are warriors! Unemployed workers of america, I ask you, once more, rise and be worthy of this historical hour.
No revolution is worth anything unless it can defend itself ..Some people will tell you UNEMPLOYMENT is a bad word. They’ll conjure up images of lazy people, This is our duty to change their perception. We must never acquiesce. For it is together! Together that we prevail! We must never concede !!! This is our duty to change their perception.I say, unemployed men…and women…of AMERICA, unite.

  108. I wonder what percentage of 99ers are over 50. I am 58 and have been jobless for 31 months. Even though I have applied for positions making 25% of my previous income but have been told I am over qualified. Older workers have been discriminated against long before the current economic crisis. Age Discrimination laws created to protect us are not policed or enforced. I filed an age claim with EEOC and 10 months later was told that they were too busy to take my case. Being jobless, I could not afford the $10.000 minimum retainer required by the attorneys. My government has failed to protect me and millions of other 99ers that are over 50. They rather spend my tax contributions to help other countries. Can I get my money back?!?!

EXTEND BENEFITS TO 99ERS OVER 50 YEARS OF AGE OR PROTECT US FROM AGE DISCRIMINATION!!!

I've been paying taxes for 41 years and this is what I get??? I can receive my pension and social security in just 4 years but by then I will have lost all I've worked for and be homeless.

    God help us all,
    Diane
