DENIED: Unemployment Extension, Tier 5, 99ers Benefits 2010. In what has become a semi-standoff in the government, the unemployment extension was DENIED in the House. Even if the final 2010 unemployment extension measure did indeed pass in the House, it would have faced an uphill battle in the Senate. The House of Representatives voted to extend the emergency unemployment extensions using the fast track, which would require a 2/3 majority for passage. The end vote was 258-154. The GOP stood strong and said that they would not pass a measure without corresponding budget cuts.
Americans watched as their dreams deflated. Over the holiday season, millions of Americans on the current emergency extensions will lose their benefits. As their benefits lapse, there will be a corresponding lapse in checks.
The failure of the passage of the unemployment extension in the House solidifies fears that a Tier 5 extension will never be passed. With the GOP taking over the House and having gains in the Senate, passing such a measure will be difficult.
In response to the GOP's failure to pass the unemployment extension, the House of Representatives Democrats announced they would stand firm and will not vote to extend Bush Tax Cuts to ALL Americans - only those making less than $250K per year.

It's not fair to those, like me, who have never had an unemployment extension and are still on their original claim. When my original claim runs out in December, I don't know what I am going to do.
ReplyDeleteI am currently drawing the extended benefits. I still have 8 weeks at the level 1 tier. Much confusion as to will I still get the last 8 weeks of my tier? Or will my benefits just simply stop at Dec. 1st?
ReplyDeleteYou will skip the other tiers and go into the EB tier for an additional 20 weeks. If Congress extends the filing deadlines during that time you should be placed into the next tier you were entittled to recieve. I live in NJ and it had happened to me in the past.

I hope Congress wakes up on THANKSGIVING AND CHRISTMAS and thank God they have a full stomach and nice presnts for their families while so many do without. I have been out of work since March of 2007 and I have sent out many resumes' and received only one response, to tell me I was not considered for the job. So we as 99ers are being punished by the very people we elected to protect and serve us. I realize that Goverment must stop spending somewhere, but why not cut the salaries of our elected Congress, President all the the Staffers that have been hired at 150,000 dollars a year. Why not cut the number of trips the President takes, what is wrong with Tele-Conferencing?

Prior to that I had never been laid off, never received food stamps or Medicaid. I've paid taxes for 34 yrs. Can you say the same about everyone in your home? Go back to school, get educated, and maybe you won't have to work "hard labor" and be angry all of the time.

I have worked for the last 25 years, made good money - did my charity stuff, the volunteer stuff, paid all my taxes, helped out anyone that needed it, paid all my bills - and then the government cut the contract to the company I was working for. 40 of us laid off poof just like that. I am tired of hearing I'm overqualified, underqualified, too educated, not educated enough, "oh, you missed putting an x in this box", too old, too white. I couldn't even get a 7.25 an hour job because I was competing against 18 year olds. ridiculous. Until now I had never asked for anything from anyone. I have put in apps all the way from what I'm qualified for all the way down to picking up trash and I guess there's just too many folks trying for the same jobs. One thing I know I have to count on - my mortgage will be paid off if I die, and I've got nice life insurance if it gets to that point - i have three kids and I'm sure they'd prefer to have me around - but I'd rather they have the home they've lived in their whole lives, and money to eat and have clothes and the opportunity to go to school for higher education which will keep them off the streets for a while. And when they're old enough I hope they get the hell out of this f'ing country and stop ploughing their hard earned money into a system that doesn't care and has no plan and therefore no future.

Because of this most white males have a difficult time when they are hit with discrimination/ageism. I am a 99er and I have sent out hundreds of resumes to avail...I did recently go on a interview this past week for a job working $12/hr working 20 hours a week...The person interviewing me had the audacity to say that I was overqualified and that unemployment pays more than what this job pays so I should basically stay on unemployment...I was enraged. It's a no-win situation. How do you tell me to stay on unemployment when I want to work...I stated this to her and she immediately dismissed me...I don't think I got that job...It is unfair people but please lets stay positive. feeding into the negativity of those that have lost touch with reality does your situation no good. They live to make your blood pressure go up by saying things that will incite you. I am not offended by any of the comments on this site because I am secure in who am and how HARD i've worked to find a job. So I just don't let their garbage in...try it...really it works...lolol

I am not speaking of Thanksgiving or Christmas, I consider these shopping holidays that most Americans cannot afford, and frankly, should only buy food and have family and friends over. I am speaking of buying warm coats for a child, or buying a meal for a family, or sharing lodging with a family. There are many ways to help, because at the end of the day, these people with children are the ones that are hit hardest. Can we as Americans really watch our people starve without extending a helping hand?
