2010 Unemployment Extension Available Soon? Politics behind Unemployment Extension Senate Vote

Will the 2010 unemployment benefits extension be available? Another senate vote regarding the unemployment extension 2010 could happen sometime this week.  The politics behind the bill is a little convoluted, but many are hoping that the measure will FINALLY pass and that people can go back to finding jobs without having to worry about how they are going to pay the bills.

The benefits extension measure is in a gridlock, as Democrats and Republicans neither one can determine how they will pay for the bill. Democrats want to "add it to the tab", and also pay for the measure by increasing taxes on small businesses, oil companies, and investment fund managers.

Republicans want to pay for it out of unused stimulus funds, citing that some of the tax hikes in the Democrats' desired bill could actually end up stifling job growth and increasing costs for hardworking and honest Americans.

Only a couple Republicans are voting for the bill, and both of them are from Maine.  Olympia Snow and Susan Collins are moderate Republicans who know the bill needs to pass.

Senator Ben Nelson from Nebraska is the sole Democrat that has voted AGAINST the bill.  If he voted with the rest of his party, they measure would have the 60 votes needed to pass.  Instead, he's against the extension (likely because his state would only benefit from 2 of the 4 tiers of benefits and they have a less than 5% unemployment rate in Nebraska) and won't budge.

The Senators that are stopping the droves of unemployed individuals will be remembered during the mid-term elections later this year.  Still yet, Republicans are sticking their ground.  Hopefully the vote doesn't lose any more Senators before Robert Byrd's replacement can be sworn in!

  2. Anyone who is unhappy with the current administration, just remember what you will get if you don't vote the dems back in. Without the dems, if you are not in the top tier of earners, you are going to literally be out in the cold. This is a time when, if no other Dem is running against him, I will vote Alvin Greene in again and agaid till he retires an old sage politician. Talk to everyone you know. Remind seniors that it's not just unemployment benefits, right now the republicans are holding up medicare/medicaid aid to states and that is just the beginning of what they will do to the very meager social benefits this richest country in the world offers to its' citizens. If you have a choice, go progressive. If you don't just sit pat with whomever in the democratic party. If we are not careful, we could very well be looking at the beginning of a real life Mad Max scenerio and you know who has the arms.

  4. Why can,t the government come up with a Mortgage loan that the unemployed would qualify for at a low intrest. Then a good portion of unemployment extentions would be paid back with intrest. There could still be some type of guidelines like 25% equity at current market value. And make it available to underemployed as well. p
People who haven't lost there homes need some type help to keep them from loosing them.

  5. Amen to ANONYMOUS. This government will soon make the middle class in America extinct; but then, that could be the Obama administration's goal. The easiest way to push the country into socialism is to destroy the strength of the middle class that supports our economy.

  7. With most of the military out of the country and so many people out of work perhaps we need to ignore both parties and "take back congress" ourselves. All we need is a stong leader to coordinate this in cities around the country and with other groups who are not happy with petty politics.

  10. Maybe we should all move to Nebraska and increase there unemployment rate. Then cast our vote for the next Democrate. Put Nelson out of work !

  11. Another shame: that some people think that unemployment covers the bill. I have completely cut everything back, moved to housing at 1/3 the cost of my last apartment, cut out everything I can, and yet I'm sinking by $500-600/month on unemployment. I've worked straight since I was sixteen - over 35 years. I worked my own way through Grad school and earned an MBA. I can't find quality work in upstate NY right now. But this article says funding is restored, "people can go back to finding jobs without having to worry about how they are going to pay the bills".

Get Real! It just barely keeps me from being thrown out on the street (when it does come). Now, I need welfare!

WAKE UP PEOPLE...TAKE BACK CONTROL AND VOTE THESE RICH GREED MONGERS OUT OF OFFICE.
THE REPUBLICANS OWN MOST BIG BUSINESS AND DON'T CARE AT ALL ABOUT THE WORKING CLASS. THE PROOF LIES IN THEM DELAYING THE UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSION AND MORE.
WE NEED TO WAKE CONGRESS UP AND REMIND THEM THEY ARE THERE TO SERVE THE PEOPLE...NOT THEIR BUSINESSES AND BANK ACCOUNTS.
WE MUST GET BACK TO "BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE".
AMERICA MUST REGROUP AND RESTRUCTURE OUR PARTY SYSTEM BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE. THIS IS ALL ABOUT A POLITICAL WAR BY THE REPUBLICANS.

  14. Congress first had to take their vacation because we were not important enough. I dont know about the rest of you, but this wasnt a happy fourth. Not having anything to grill, nothing positive in my future, every job isnt hiring or just like they keep saying, there is 100 people filling out that same application. Now congress is dragging their feet after their hangovers from their vacation. This month and a half i have been without anything is a nightmare! Simple things like putting gas in a car is hurting me. I cant afford any maintenance on my car, so when i do go anywhere i have to listen to my brakes squeling because they are down to the wear plate. Potential employers can hear me coming! Thanks alot Senators, i hope one day you feel what im feeling.

  15. This problem is one of mammoth proportions, but if you want something done you must have "YOUR" voice heard. Not that of an Anonymous American. Don't be afraid to speak out against your government. It is our country just as much as it is theirs. We may be penniless, homeless and hopeless, but if you expect change speak out.

My family and I went to DC on the 4th weekend and protested all weekend long on the in-action on the unemployment extension. I stood in front of the White House proud to be able to protest what I believe in. Revolution is just another word for "CHANGE" and that is what President Obama promised us. If this is the "CHANGE" he had in mind, it is time to take to the streets on a daily basis. I will not let this government take my family and fellow Americans down a path of middle-class destruction. Check out more on our protest at http://dcrevolt.blogspot.com

  16. While I am angry with the senate I am also angry with Obama. He could have issued an executive order extending unemployment benefits and he has only spent about 5 minutes even thinking about the people who are losing everything. At this point even if I get a job I won't have the money to put gas in my car to get there. I will be homeless by August 15th if this doesn't pass this week. Ben Nelson, maybe I'll come set up a tent on your front lawn!!!

  17. I went on 3 interviews so far and it's only tue. At all of the interviews there were at least 10 people waiting to be interviewed for the same job.. The last job had 38 people apply. so, my chance is 38 to 1.. great odds... I have been looking hard for 18 months. I guess i'm just lazy and don't want to work... my kids don't want to eat and we don't want to live like those employed. I have never in 20 years be unemployed and now I have lost almost everything. I just want to say thank you...

I haven't received any since end of May. Bills are piling up but still have to pay utilities,I've had to borrow to pay that. Government should not wait on UI extensions. People are starving.

  23. While I am angry beyond words I will not sink to the level of wishing harm on any of these horrible people. The only thing I wish is for the people to be given to oppertunity to vote everyone out of power that has made the unemployeed lives even more impossible for the past few weeks. The fact that then went on vacation while we all suffered will never be forgotten. I blame both the democrats and the republicans for not having this resolved. Wish my the people wanting my bills were as understanding.

    ReplyDelete
  24. People keep saying if we're not happy we can vote them out. Really? And replace them with who? Voting out the Democrats for Republicans to show we're mad and not gonna take it anymore is like voting in sharks because dolphins are ignoring us.

  25. Get a grip people. To all that wish Nelson dead, use vulgar language. We all need to show the D.C. politicians who are the adults in this country. Be angry, speak your mind, but if you talk like a idiot, you are no better then the yahoos in D.C.

I am so glad your state has a low unemployment, but here in MI we are still at almost 15% and in the county I reside it is a staggering 27%. Hope you had a great holiday you scumbag!! We will not forget all of you in congress that have FAILED the American people in this time of need!!!

  27. How much longer can they prolong this? How much longer will they keep hurting people like this? do they not see? do they not understand? Of course not, they will never uinderstand because they are rich and they HAVE a job. I would love to see them walk a day in the shoes of the unemployed person dependent on the UI benefits that they are holding back. To see how much it hurts to have to sell your possession just to be able to feed your family. It hurts and sometimes thinking that I wanna die is a better solution to all this madness.

  28. This is a sad time in America. We have people from all states losing everything they worked for all of their lives & these guys just go on vacation??voting them out is fine, but it dies not help me or the millions out of work right now.The really bad part of all this is I talked with the gov.office in Wisconsin & received a letter from the UI stating my benefits would last until Nov.6th Then all of a sudden they said no more I'm out.I thought I had a little more time to try & save our home before I had to put it on the market. Now by the time it would sell it will get foreclosed on & we lose everything. So much for the American Dream! Thanks for letting me vent,it keeps me from going postal!

29 have been accused of spousal abuse
7 have been arrested for fraud
19 have been accused of writing bad checks
117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses
3 have done time for assault
71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit
14 have been arrested on drug-related charges
8 have been arrested for shoplifting
21 are currently defendants in lawsuits
84 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year

A HANDOUT to one of these criminals should pass unemployment extension benefits, I think.

to office, With that said, I am changing parties this nov and voting dem.. Reason: I lost my job and a job I though I would never lose. I have paid taxs on a 100k job for 20 years and now I am in a time of need and where our the reps.. Not helping me or anyone else out work. But, when I do get back to work there hand will be right back in my pocket for tax's so the can continue to get there raise's. I will remember this nov..

  32. Okay, I apply for jobs 5 to 8 a day. I have even applied 2 or 3 times to some jobs. I finally get a job online and need to hook up my Internet which I was waiting to spend the $ until I got the job so that I did not waste the money. With me so far? Now, I have no backup - you know the unemployment extension failed. Now I have no gas money to go apply or interview for any other jobs and I might loose this job because I cannot hook my Internet. No one can live on this unemployment money, it is just a cushion. Why can't they approve the extension before I loose my online job because I never showed up. What is the deal here? People are loosing their homes, cars, minds? If Congress is going to cancel unemployment extensions, more notice and alternatives should be given. People should not play politics with other peoples' lives. We are not so far gone we cannot fix the problems without some elbow grease. The unemployed people would like to work and pay taxes to keep our government going. I know I would love to go back to paying taxes of some substance, that would mean that I was working a good job. But if the government goes like this, who cares? If the government does not care about me, why should I care about them? But you know what, I do care about this country and I do think that it is one of the best in the world. The in fighting and finger pointing make kindergarten kids look grown up. Let's get it together and get ourselves out of this mess. Please!

  33. After this horrible travesty that we are going through right now, Congress is still passing out money to foreign countries for "aid". Hey fellows, me need a little aid right here in our own country! Stop bickering like 4 year olds and think about how it would be if it were you in our shoes, even when we were getting our $275.00 weekly unemployment, there was no way we could keep up with putting food on the table, paying mortgages and rent and all the "good" things you take for granted. Now, you have taken that measly $275.00 away from us. Along with your taking it away, could you just please let us know how you can do this to your countrymen, how you sleep at night knowing that still another few thousand of your own people are sleeping on the streets at the same time because of you. We have all worked many years and paid our taxes, part being to keep you in your cushy jobs. Sit down, make yourself a budget using $275.00 as a net pay and see if there is just one of your weekly expenses that you could cover with that, it might open your eyes a little bit. I would vote against anyone who has been a part of this process, but I am beginning to realize that all of you will promise the moon until you get voted in and then the excuses begin. Where do we go from here?

Genocide is the deliberate and systematic destruction, in whole or in part, of an ethnic, racial, religious, or national group. (by: Wikipedia)

I believe the unemployed is consistant with a national group and the Republican Senators' actions are deliberate and systematic distruction in whole or in part of the unemployed.

I have paid into the system for years and now have nothing. I surrendered my vehicle last week because I couldn't afford it. How dare you all sit here and judge. If this bill doesn't pass most of us will end up on welfare which YOU will pay a larger portion of than you would unemployment as unemployment is offset by employer contributions. 55. First I haft to say how pissed and disappointed I am with the government. I was a federal government contractor for the General Services Administration up till December 09. I was layed off because the branch cheif wasted alot of "taxpayer" money for a project for a division within the branch which has been a failure for the past 2 or 3 years. My contract could not be renewed because of that. I have not been able to find a job since and now im down to my last payment of unemployement. I have whent from making 57k a year, paying a shit load of taxes down to being rejected at fast food places because they cant hire because they dont want to layoff anyone or they think something is wrong with me because of my profession and now applying for a minimum wage job. The other problem here is these lazy no good freeloading worthless assholes that have been sucking off the system all these years, have sucked up alot of money and taken it away from hardworking people that have payed taxes and have "EARNED" unemployement benifits. We need this extension passed, we deserve it, we earned it for keeping those rats in washington in office!!!!!!!!!

  58. I'm a 54 year old woman that is scared, anxious, disappointed & angry with our Government but am not damned lazy. I was laid off of both my fulltime day job & then 2 weeks later laid off of my p/t evening job back in April 2009. Was working 12 hour days with no complaint. Now I spend 7-9 hrs per day, 7 days per week sending my resume to any possible job I thought I was qualified for. I can tell you there is age discrimination out there. Finally about 5 months ago I got 3 interviews & went I got to them I found 15 people in front of me & after the interview I found another 20 people all waiting for one Customer Service job. As I'm at the computer job looking I have C-Span on the TV, listening our Senators destroy mine & more than a million plus other unemployed citizens lives. I've always paid my taxes & always voted. The end result is I lost my unemployment benefits a month ago & now am facing my utilities & car insurance being shut off. Foreclosure & being homeless is just around the corner. What happened to working hard & earning 'THE AMERICAN DREAM'? And President Obama, who I voted for & believed in, why aren't you coming to our rescue? All you have do is say "enough is enough" & use your power of an Excutive Order to give our unemployment benefits back NOW. Do we have to beg????? Ok, I'm begging. My life have turned into a nightmare but who cares. Not the republicans, that's for sure. Trying not to feel sorry for myself, at least my children are grown, out of the home & thank God they're working. I do feel very bad for the families & try to keep that in mind as I cry every time a bill comes in that can't be paid. Thank God for food pantries. That's enough venting for now. Good luck to all the unemployed.

I was making alot more money than I am drawing with unemployment...and I had health insurance...now I don't....so they don't need to call me lazy, I did not ask for all this. Pass the Unemployment Extension. Our Senators in Ga is voting against the bill so I will be voting against them come the next election. ```

  65. You would think that after watching the way washington works all of these years with presidents, people would stop blaming and expecting presidents to be saviors. Although
the president is the highest executor, dicisions still have to go through congress and the senate. If you are angry and I can see many people are get angry with the right people. The country say they are rid of probably the worst president ever, I think we have a good man as president but there are barriers. The man can't just raise a magic wand and say it is done for everything that we need. Why are we paying congress and the senate. I guess we pay then to watch us suffer. We are the common people not the aristocrats.I guess we were born to suffer.

I can't believe that Congress isn't making this their absolute top priority right now. Our lovely Republicans are worried about "hardworking and honest Americans" being hurt by the passing of this bill. Guess what? I WAS a hardworking American until Bush's administration flushed our economy down the toilet, and now I'm just an honest American -as I have always been- who is out of work and cannot find a job no matter how hard I try. It is not only putting a huge strain on my financial situation, but also on my relationship with my better half, my family, and myself as well. Politicians never have to worry about these seemingly small problems because they are in a position to be able to do practically anything to improve their quality of life by voting in bloated raises for themselves and voting down anything they think could potentially hurt them. Never in my life have I been ashamed of my government until the past 7 years or so, and they have only made themselves look worse by allowing things like this to fall by the wayside while they posture and bicker about it yet again AFTER A NICE WEEKLONG JULY 4 BREAK FOR THEMSELVES as the unemployed and job-seeking watch their bills pile up and their personal lives deteriorate. Thank you, Scott Brown, for being everything I had figured you'd be: a self-serving Republican fat-head, pencil neck jerk who seems to care more about how you're looking today than the people you supposedly represent. The only reason you got elected is because Martha Coakley is even more woefully pathetic than you, if that's even possible. And special thanks go to Mr. Obama as well, who until he steps in and lights the proverbial fire under the a$$es of those who should be passing this bill, has shown me he is capable of absolutely nothing. And I'll save the best for last: thank you SO much, Mr. Ben Nelson from Nebraska, whose shoe size I am quite sure exceeds his IQ. Thanks to you, us honest and previously hardworking Americans are left hanging in the balance while we try and secure a job, ANY job to try and make ends meet. And thus far for me, it isn't happening. How do you guys sleep at night? How can you look at yourselves in a mirror? You are pathetic and you need to get this done IMMEDIATELY.

  73. I have been out of work for over a year now. Every Sunday I'm looking in the newspaper looking for work, going to fill out application at places I hear are hiring from word of mouth. Its so damn disheartening to send out so many resumes, fill out so many apps with no call backs. Ive been on one interview, ONE, and when I got to it there where 30 or more other guys there for the same job. I didn't get the job needless to say. I am a veteran how got out of the military so I could spend more time with my wife and have kids. Now I can barely buy my daughter food to eat or be the father I should be to her. I've already moved in with my sister and lost my car, now my U.I was stopped last month, its hard to look my daughter in face and tell her no baby daddy can't get that. Her birthday is next month and I wont be able to get her anything, not to mention her first day of kindergarten around the corner. It hurts me to my core that I can't do anything for her. Pass the bill already, we need it

Someone on another website posting from Nebraska was saying how horrible a "Senator" Ben Nelson is - my guess is he's too busy looking after himself to worry about the people he's representing, from what I read in that guy's post. I wish Ted Kennedy was still alive and in office. He wasn't perfect - no politician is - but he was the closest thing to a working person's ally and he was a Democrat to boot. Replace Scott Brown (who of course voted against, he's a Republican) with him and most likely none of this shit would be happening.

  79. Lost my job on 12/5/09 due to the facory I worked at closing. Since then, it has been a downward slide. If it is not bad enough that I can't find a job and my bnefits are exhauste after only 26 weeks, now my husband lost his job 6/24/10. I have never been so scard, disgusted, and depressed in my life. I have actualy had suicidal thoughts briefly enter my mind. I now have an actual understanding as to how a person's mind could snap under such stress. This time last year, my husband & I were bringing home around $800 weekly. Now myself, husband, and 3 yr old daughter is trying to make it on $300 weekly. It takes nearly 3 checks to make our mortage payment. that only leaves approximately $450 dollars for utilities, auto insurance, and to eat on. Finally broke down and applied for food stamps and medicare. Did get medicare for my daughter, but was told that me & my husband didn't qualify because we were a family unit. In other words, we couldn't get insurance because we were married. If we seperated, we could both get insurance. We did receive $268 food stamps per month. This whole experience has made me very humble.

Hey "Anonymous" douchebag: Don't try to pin this shit that the Republicans are pulling on the Democrats. It's dipshits like you that fall for the trap. I'm not too impressed with Obama, either, but this is the Republican plan: piss off the people who need help the most to make the Dems look bad since it's a Dem in office right now. And by the way, I DIDN'T vote for "change", I didn't vote for anyone in the last election (for the first time in my life) because the candidates all sucked! Obama's lack of experience is coming through loud and clear, and if he had lost we would've wound up with McCain (or worse) attention-whore Palin if the old man croaked in office. Yep...lots of great choices there. And Bush sucked worse than all of them put together. That said, I'll still take a Democrat any day. These were just extraordinary circumstances this time around.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Spread the word.

There are roughly 16 million people Unemployed in America seeking work.

The numbers being reported are only those counted because they are collecting Unemployment.

The Unemployed are not lazy, or on drugs, or not wanting to work. If they were, they would have been fired.

More often than not the Unemployed are skilled older workers who had spent long times on their jobs prior to being laid off, or let go, or dismissed. Pick one that implies not fired.

These 2 million plus workers, and remember these are just the ones currently counted, are also more often than not established in homes in communitys throught the nation. They hold loans, car notes, credit card debt, insurance payments, ect so on.

Now imagine if an eigth of that 16 million people we mentioned earlier, those 2 million, were to no longer be able to pay their bills.

And thats where we are at now.

2 million plus Americans who will default on their mortages. Car Loans. Credit Card Debt. Stop paying insurance premiums. Ect. When you lose everything you lose "EVERYTHING". Paying pesky bills when living on the street is usually very low on the list of priorites.

Those banks you just bailed out? Yeah they are going to get hit with 2 million in bad loans. Wall Street you just bailed out? Well when the Credit Card companies report they had to bite the big one. And Insurance companies reporting their customer base had fallen by 2 million. And the housing market suddenly getting 2 million used homes. 2 million used cars.

Well I'm thinking you get the picture.

Now with these 2 million people suddenly needing and asking for even greater assistance, Welfare for example, than they would have needed to begin with, who ends up paying for the increased cost? Well you Americans who are still working do. Didn't you learn anything when we bailed out banks and Wall Street? Rich people don't pay. Only the poor people do. We bail out the rich in this country.

And that is exactly why they will bail us out a little at the time. To absorb the huge hit in small incremental hits that are less noticable and easier to report on. It's all about perceptions ya know.

Now if those 2 million people took all they could get out of their homes right now. Sold everything and bought tents. Camped with family. Took all their money out of the banks. Stopped paying for any health insurance. If they all did it at once. Then the true effects of this slow bleed would be apparent.
