Tier 5, 99ers Update: Unemployment Extension and Benefits Needed Amid Unemployment Rise

Tier 5 unemployment extension updates are needed by the millions of 99ers who are praying for benefits to roll out their way. The recent Jobless report indicated what so many on main street already knew - an extension isn't only needed, it's downright necessary.

The Tier 5 unemployment extension bill has been introduced by Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and is known under its moniker of S3706. There are a lot of controversial elements to the bill, which would bring 20 weeks of benefits on top of the 99 available to those in the worst hit states.

The one thing that is great about S3706 is that it provides businesses with an incentive to hire people who have been unemployed during the long term. Certain tax credits available to businesses may make them decide to hire extra help, and hire those who have been unemployed.

There are many questions that need to be answered. How will we pay for the measure? Will it help the economy? Will it provide for economic and job growth?

The politics as usual will play a role in when or if this bill will pass. Keep an eye on this legislation and also the jobless reports as they roll out every week and month.

  1. Don't give up hope guys! I've been out of work for a while but staying positive helps and making sure to surround yourself with positive people as well, does do...Of course, that does not pay the bills (lol) but I do rest better at night knowing that I've done all I can do each and every day to provide for myself, my family and to friends that are in need. I stay prayer and I hope you guys do as well...May God be with us all!

  2. I would like to know why, if implemented, the pay out will not be retroactive like the unemployment extension was? What is the point of the extension being retroactive if the pay is not included? why are we in out own country being treated like 3rd world inhabitants? why is nothing being said about the fact that illigals are being able to draw unemployment? I thought that you had to be a cityizen of the US to draw unemployment, is this not correct?

  4. They just need to pass the extension for the ones who have totally exhausted everything. I send emails to them daily asking for it and I suggest you all do the same. Send it to the White house, senators, congressman, and whomever is responsible. What is Nancy Peloski email address? Let her hear from us.

  5. So sorry we have such a heartless government, they care more about helping other countries instead of our own people.

  6. When they return, they do NOT need to go round and round with this situation. Those REpublicans are no good and that Democrats that opposed it no good. Just extend it and move on. Remember folks when it is time for elections who is for us and who is against us.

  7. Its sad that we are being held hostage by our own government. We are the pawns in their repub vs dem game they are playing. This is turning into a contest to see who can win between them and our plight has been forgotten. We are being forced into financial ruin daily and we will never be able to recover from it. Are they going to wipe our bad credit away? Are they going to get our homes and cars back? Are we going to be able to ever get a job? Do they even care? NO! Do we hear support from anyone? NO! Why are we being made to suffer and lose here? What has happened to our country? It is more important for them to go on extended vacations and just leave us like this. why are our lives being determined by all of them? Why are we putting up with all of this! America needs to revolt and take our country back. when our government doesn't even represent its citizens or help them then it is time to change.

  8. Ive lost my job, my self, my home due to foroclosure, and now its working on my marriage. All this since March 2010 (end of tier 4). I pray something happens to make a tier 5 asap. God bless those who are following right behind me and those who went through it before me. This is aweful. We once were a middle class "perfect" family now pure devastation and desperation.

  9. To the fellow above mentioning it's time to revolt, I clearly and dearly agree! It's actually our constitutional right that if this nation's government which THE PEOPLE put into power has lost sight of representing those very people then the right to revolution may be put into action.

This nation was created as republic, not a democracy or as today, a tyranny. We the people have equal powers to the government that because of lack of education on this area many of us have not realized our true rights in this nation.

More Americans are realizing this right though because of the actions the government is taking upon us. They have lost their views and the way of we THE PEOPLE! It wont be long that we will take back what is rightfully ours, this nation. We will tear down the sanctions of government and rebuild it to by the ways our fore fathers have before us when creating this nation.

  10. The unemployment insurance $$ is ours, it's not a hand out or welfare. Why are they keeping us from our $$. They can't just arbitrarily decide how many weeks they will extend the benefit and for whom. It depends upon jobs, jobs, jobs that we're still losing, losing, losing. When there is a job for everyone who wants one that's when the extensions should stop and not until then.

  11. It's really sad that this country has no back up plan to help us. We are all tax paying individuals that have worked all our lives and are now living in poverty. We have lost everything due to this economy. This country is always helping out other countries, but when it comes to helping our own...it turns it's back.

I now have to sell my car to try and keep afloat. It's going to make it a lot more difficult to find a job without transportation. There is always the bus, but who can afford it?

  13. We have all paid taxes while working all these years. Our tax dollars should be helping us now. We have already helped every country, business, Now is the time for We Americans to be helped. We need a tier 5......We also need to lay off those politicians and see how fast they will get a tier 5 passed...................

  14. We all sick and tired of hearing about General Motors and Wall Street bailouts. We are sick and tired of the U.S. sending billions of our tax dollars overseas to countries that spit on us every chance they get. And where are the jobs? You ass-holes in Washington screwed that up, too, fixing it so our jobs went overseas. We are sick of you guys spending billions on wars nobody supports. I can't wait till Nov. elections. I have a list, and all you assholes are on it! We 99ers need help! Why are you taking a 6 week vacation when the country is in dire need of leadership? Who takes a 6 week vacation in the middle of a crisis? Well, we 99ers may be broke, but by God we can still vote. Keep that in mind while you are on vacation this month!

  15. Just like I stated on another website………………

You folks should have saved your money and you would not be in this position. How many of YOU 99ers shopped at thrift stores, dented can stores, day old bread stores, drove a 25 year old car, and never ran the A/C before this recession problem????? Until 2 years ago, I grossed over 150K a year with the wife's income. My family of 5 lived on just under 30K a year in Upland, Ca. I OWN my home (worth over 600K) and my 25 year old car. My children (3) are all 4.0 students and have earned their way into Ivy league colleges on scholarships. I have managed to save over 1.8 million dollars and because I am a frugal investor, I am now worth over 4.3 million. YES, I did loose close to 1Mil, BUT, I still have over 4 million dollars. 95% of my friends lived well beyond their means and are now broke. IT IS ALL THEIR FAULT!!! One must learn to SAVE 30% of their income at minimum. If all of the country had done so and not bought new cars, boats, shopped at whole foods market, purchased clothing at Sax, take vacations, you would be in the same position as me. And BTW, I am DEBT FREE!!!! I am now purchasing homes in Riverside County, Ca for 25% of what they were 2-3 years ago. I will then rent them for at least 1300 per month (this is on the low side). SO, after I purchase 7 of these homes for appx 140K each, I will collect 91K per year in rent. After investing just over 1Million dollars, this will give me a return of over 9% for doing nothing but investing my hard earned money!!! If many of you had lived like I have, you could be doing the same thing. ALSO, after my 26 weeks of UI, I turned down any more payments as I paid into the system for only that 26 weeks. I don't take what I have not earned.

Something you 99ers are not thinking of, the MAIN reason tier 5 will NEVER happen is according to my math, there are appx 1.3 million people who qualify for the 99ers situation. IF a tier 5 bill is passed, the unemployment rate will go up no less than .7%. This TODAY would have unemployment at over 10% and the election of our Dems would NEVER happen. This is probably a great thing so I hope you get your extension. Then the GOP will take over and get the economy going again with tax cuts for people like me, so I will invest my hard saved money to help business grow and I will benefit with more money in my pocket!!!

Please do not misunderstand me. I am VERY good at what I do and I have not been able to find employment for over 2 years. I have had 5 interviews out of state which the prospective employer paid for and I am still unemployed. My gripe is that people need to be more frugal with their income and quit trying to purchase things you can't afford. For example, if you go on daily walks, bring a bag so you can pick up any cans or bottles you might see. Look for lost change and other valuable items on the sidewalk and street. I will bet I have picked up over 1K in the last 10 years on my walks. It also makes your neighborhood nicer to live in.

    Just something to think about............

  16. NO MORE RECESS FOR THE "HOUSE"! THEY HAVE NO RIGHT TO MAKE US "99er's" WAIT UNTIL SEPTEMBER (if we're lucky)!!!

THEY NEED TO GET BACK TO WORK (at least those jerks have jobs). THEY JUST DON'T HAVE A CLUE ABOUT THE REAL WORLD!!!

  17. From this point we start fighting( me and my husband) because i dont have money to participate with him our bills. It is out of my hand. I hope to create jobs so we can manage our life without asking for help.

  18. We should have saved our money to avoid having to ask for a tier five extension. REALLY ? Not all of us out here have had the chance to save a dime. And those of us like myself who did have savings and a nice chunk I might add had to use it all up paying bills to stay afloat as long as I could and cashed in what was left of my 401K after the market tanked and found my self losing my home anyway because I could not afford the payment on unemployment benefits alone. And I was collecting the highest level of benefits in California you can collect because I made a good living. Until I was let go two years ago. And at 62 you simply can't find a job. period. Over qualified thats crap but too old might be the real reason. I applied for and I am getting my social security now and I thank God for it but its far short of what I was used to and planned for. I feel the most sorry for those in the age group of 40 to 62 what the hell does the gov't really expect them to do. If you can't find work because there is none and you can't collect unemployment because the GOP thinks you are a lazy useless drain on society then what is the options left. I hear people say on the news and on blogs that if you have not found a job in two years you really don't want one. What the hell is wrong with you to make such horrible statements. I always wonder just what news people are watching. TOday of Fox News Niel Covuto was saying how horrible it is for people to demand more benefits on wall st at a ralley. And at the same time reports the job outlook is worse and the unemployment claims are rising. What the hell was the question. Are you blind or just stupid. You complain about the people asking for more benefits and at the same report the claims are rising. YOu can't have it both ways neil. What a joke. If there were jobs people would be at work today not setting here writing how they want jobs they would have one.
One guy told Neil Cavuto he was interviewing that well we did bail out just about every financial bank and giant on wall st but not much for the working stiff and the sound track went silent. Neil had nothing to say. And I think that says it all.

  20. For the man who has 4 million dollars because he had a job to begin with and grossed over 50K a year with his wife, most of the people that are laid off right now never made that big of a salary and I for one have never even been on a vacation, or had a new car, or bought the finest clothes, or lived in the most expensive house and I am 50 years old, so where do you get off telling anyone how wonderful you have it and the reason the rest of us don't is because we were not frugal enough. You have no idea who has what or what they have spent so shut your big million dollar mouth because quite frankly I don't give a dam about your pompous ass!!!

Well said. When are they going to stop lying to us about how do we pay for UI extension. How about helping Americans first. Very easy then debate how going to pay to help other countries with our money after we help Americans first.

Just disgusting to see them try and tell us no money. The truth his they don't have priorities right. Stop wasting our billions on other countries when we need it here.

  23. After 2 years and still no matter what we do there are not enough jobs to avoid increasing numbers over 2 years Unemployed. Enough with it's extension that is reason for this. People do save over the years. No one ever said we needed 2 years of savings to make it until we find a job. We all became victims of what happen in summer 08. When CEO's are making on avg 400 times the avg company worker this decade that is why we have so many unemployed. Years ago it was more like 30 times. They fire people and yet make too much money to justify so many being laid off. Congress votes themselves lifetime pensions even after one term if they lose. They think UI for life we should pay for just only for them. This elite bs while we all get screwed has to stop.

  25. What if?????
What if 20 million people filed bankruptcy within a 24 yr. perior?"
What if 20 million people called their bank on the same day, and said "sorry, cant pay the mortgage?"
What if 20 million people called their utility company in one day, and said; "pull the plug, there's no money?"
What if 20 million people applied for food stamps, and filled out applications for all available assistance in a single day?
What if 20 million people cancelled their newspaper and cable subscriptions in one day?

First of all, the banks, social service agencies, newspapers and cable guys would not have enough manpower to cancel anything, and they would go screaming to their senators and congressmen.

Also, connect with your Senators and Congressmen and tell them to send S3706 to the shredder!

  26. The Dilapidated Propaganda Of The American Dream

In order to understand our government; we must consider the powers that be, being a 99er. I believed that President Obama would “hold true to his promise”. Nevertheless; seeing jobs by the millions being outsourced by Corporate America downsizing, greed and complasive CEO’s and politicians. This makes me often wonder. Give Me Liberty OR Give Me Death!!!!!

My fellow 99er’s our Government has signed a proclamation to your DEATH!! Moreover, our government has formally delivered its dilapidated propaganda of the American dream. However, the 99er’s are the forsaken and forgotten. Our Government commanded the 99er’s to march forward into despair because there are no jobs for us to bear.

In other words by excluding the 99er’s from the HR4213 bill. We are forced to leave behind the loves ones we once cherished, family heirlooms and treasures of what may have been. Because as a man you feel that you can no longer support their needs or hearts.

“A man without a Job” is like “a man that does not exist!!!” And without the S.3706 bill extension the 99er’s will not exist!!! But let me say this! My fellow 99’ers; The way congress thinks today is; let’s roll the dice!!! The 99’ers are not important; “let the chips fall as they may” as they did with the 911 responders.

The Banks here on Wall Street are doing business as usual reporting high earnings; high credit card interest rates. Foreclosure’s for the month of June 2010 was 1.5 million!! National suicide casualties are going unrecognized due to heartless decisions not to report them; but recent media broadcasts and articles introduce their fate. I’m a true believer in GOD. But I often pray and wonder about myself and the other 99’ers future in America today, the land of equality freedom and liberty.

Again; Congress you give the 99er’s an executive order. As forgotten bewildered broken and soldiers. We command congress to an extension to liberty and justice in the name of survival!!

Rescue the 99er’s from the depths of despair, suicide, homeless and wondering aimlessly in a barren jobless land because we need jobs. For it is your duty as men not leaders to obey and command your OATH!!! To protect serve your fellow citizen’s without discrimination or malice.

I hereby command all 99er’s to converge on Washington D.C. on 9/11/2010 in the name of survival and not to sit back as peasants to your own execution. Remember your voice and vote counts. Let Washington hear us as well…. Send your voices, thoughts, concerns and hearts. Yes We Will And Yes We CAN!!!!! Ask Yourself Why? And You Will Never Get An Answer!!

Besides pushing for a Tier 5, Tier 6 ect we needto take it to the next level and call the companies out that refuse to considerthe unemployed and make them look bad

  29. this really sucks, I was forced to take a much lower paying temp job (for a month)because I needed to eat and pay my bills (the unemployment check was twice as much as I am bringing home working)I exhausted my benefits too. and now I wont be eligible to file a new claim cause I didnt make enough in the quarter..so either way I am really screwed even if they pass this bill. It really would have been nice if they did this before I screwed myself over. now I will be without unemployment and a job and no hope.

  30. Why are we helping every other country but our own, I have lost my job, home, car, everything and am homeless and can't find a job because I am over qualified. We have people on every corner of the cities having to beg to survive. We have electric companies, utility and other creditors that don't care if we can't pay. And while this is happening we have the government throwing parties, eating in high class restaurants, driving expensive cars, etc, you get my point. I have worked since I was 14 years of age, sometime 2 jobs at a time just to make ends meet, paying all my taxes all these years and when I can't find a job just like so many that I have talked to our government does nothing to help us, but spends millions sending money to other countries. What about America? Are we to live like a third world nation while our government lives it up? The main reason we got away from England is the same reason as to what is going on today. TAXES TAXES TAXES with no help for the needy. I am begining to be ashamed to be an American. We have the program for AFDC but that isn't a real big help either. If you want cash assistance you have to do job searches for 40 hours a week, each and every week and you end up with approx. $200.00 a month and it is very difficult to do with no car, gas or home to live in and this is one our goverments answers to help. I would like to see them try to live for $200.00 dollars a month, plus work 40 hours a week, like that would happen, they won't take a pay cut they only are interested in raising their paychecks. There are no more applications being taken for Section 8 Housing and we have illegal aliens, getting benefits for cash assistance, food stamps and medical benefits as well as unemployment. WHY???? Plus we have a President that takes away the Stimulus Check because it doesn't help??? This makes no sense. We have so many people living on the streets or in their cars with no hope of things changing anytime soon. As one of these people I feel our government should stop sending money to other countries and start helping American's. Since there are no jobs in certain area's of our county and people cannot afford to move to where there may be a job or two where is the hope. We have a major increase in crime. Where I live Banks, stores, etc. are being robbed over and over again. There is an epidemic in the sale of drugs, where does it end. When people become hopeless what are they to do to survive. I live off the charity of sometimes strangers who I have to trust just to have a place for my children to sleep. I went from owning my own business one day to nothing. I never thought it would happen to me but, people need to remember that we are not lazy or not wanting to work. I would love if anywhere would hire me and have put in thousands of applications with no hope in site. The only hope that I have is that the Government will increase the weeks of my unemployment so that I can at least just have enough money to live in a bug infested effecency with me and my three children until I can find someone to hire me. In my whole life I have never not had a job. It is driving me crazy not working. Eventually you feel that you have no self worth and that things will never change for the better, they just keep getting worse. So I a begging for my kids that the government do something to help American's and not other countries or illegal alien's who should GO HOME and stop taking from true American's who really need the help. Some of us 99's are living below poverty level, saving money is not an option when you are selling everything you own just to be able to survive. I only pray that you that think that we don't need the extention never have to find out how wrong you are.

While Congress is on their break, thinking they did everybody a favor by extending the deadlines for the existing tiers, there are American children going without proper food, housing, and basic necessities. What would these legislators think if it were their kids? Would it become an emergency then? In the meantime there are 1.4 million voters going hungry with their families, add to that 50,000 per day…Mr. President, this is an emergency, reconvene congress and make them take care of the people who take care of them…you know, taxes, and the salaries we pay them.

  39. Concerning the August 12, 2010 5:41 PM post.

It is so easy to criticize people less fortune then yourself when you have all you need. Giving your advise on how your life is so wonderful does not help any of the people that have worked all their lives as well and now have lost everything because they can not find employment. Planing for a rainy day may be a smart thing to do if you had the income to do so but a lot of people live from paycheck to paycheck with no way of putting 30% of their paycheck away and the ones who were fortunate enough to put money in savings that are laid off no longer have that security. You do not have the right to sit in judgment of anyone and hopefully one day you will understand the pain of not being able to pay your bills or the loss of dignity after you get rejected time after time again when looking for a job. I hope you sleep well with all your money while your fellow human beings are suffering.

Obama had to stress to them the last time to pass the last extension. He had another jobs bill and other things and they blocked it said it would raise debt well now the REpublicans want to help the rich and it will raise the debt. Its the republicans.
