DREAM Act 2010 56-43 Avoids Cloture: GOP Filibuster Begins

DREAM Act 2010 56-43 vote avoids cloture, and yet another GOP filibuster has been started. The GOP filibustered the unemployment extension earlier this year, and the DREAM Act is just another bill that will face stiff opposition. In addition to the DREAM Act, the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" military law was not repealed, despite massive support from pretty much both democrats and republicans.

The DREAM Act allows illegal immigrants to get a green card, provided they either get a college degree or serve 2 years in the military. In addition to these requirements, the illegal aliens must have entered the country while they were minors.

Many who oppose the bill don't want taxpayer dollars going to help illegal immigrants further their education. Those who support the bill note that they are not ultimately responsible for their situation in life, as their parents are the ones who really brought them in to the country.

So what do you think? Do you think that the DREAM act should be passed, or do you think its language should be struck from the Defense bill it is contained in?

  4. We dont want or need a constant flow of Mexico's poor peasants, we cant afford to take care of them anymore. We have 20 Million of them now, No more.

  5. Our military needs more troops. Our society needs educated people not uneducated. The uneducated weigh on society, let these people who have grown up in our country be a productive part of society. These aren't illegals streaming into the country but kids who have grown up here. Your ignorance of that fact shows that you want to keep taking care of these poor peasants but wont empower them to take care of themselves.

  6. To the person who commented above me about "MEXICO'S POOR PEASANTS" I hope your ENTIRE family's lineage is strictly and 100% "AMERICAN" which i DOUBT! Because all of us whether black, white, brown puerto rican or asian come from IMMIGRANTS!! unless you are NATIVE AMERICAN then you nor your family originated from the US. The dream act is the answer to the prayers of all the young people who worked hard and strived for excellence all their lives. They deserve the chance to continue their education and make their dreams a reality. Unlike some american citizens who slack off in school, or become juvenile deliquents and not care because they know they can live off welfare, flip burgers at burger king, or go to community college on YOUR TAX DOLLARS! now how about that. You people need to stop being selfish and consider the bigger picture. Everyone is crying about the recession and the unemployment rate being sky high but no one wants to support a cause that would change all of that. The more undocumented aliens that get the chance to work, the more taxes being paid; eventually balancing out the economy! Think about it.....without immigrants there would be no one to mow your lawns, clean your houses;malls;public restrooms;parks, and all the dirty work that most americans would turn their noses up at. I am a dream act advocate and I will continue to pray to the most high God that it gets filibustered.

  7. Sneaking this into a Defense Appropriations bill that it has nothing to do with and denying debate on the content of the amendment is not Democracy. Regardless of pro or con the DREAM act, Washington politics is corrupt beyond belief.

  11. As far as this Dream Act and Illegals Aliens.
No why...None of them should get a free ride. We have been paying for them to be here illegally for years.
And it's time we bring the Senators that support them up on Ethic Charges. The Senators and the President are favoring one group of people........Sorry folks they can't do that.
It's time to file Ethic Charges.

  13. If the Dream Act is a good thing then it ought to stand on it's own. The necessity to tack it on to the Defense bill indicates that those supporting it know that it will never pass and they are trying to make an end run around the majority of American citizens who don't want it. Let them bring it up for a vote as a stand alone bill. In my book the wishes and needs of the American citizen trump those of people here illegally 100% of the time.

  14. For those who voted against it arguing that immigrant kids should not be helped further their education, with taxpayers funds.....I ask, myself.
Aren't this kids suppose to contribute with taxes when they turn into legal adults??

  15. Hey idiot-
PELL GRANTS (notice the spelling) are based on INCOME, NOT RACE.
If your children are as smart as you, there may be another reason they did not receive scholarshiops. . .

  17. I see that a lot of people are not getting the concept of the DREAM ACT. This is not for kids to get grants or money to go to school. It is about giving them the oportunity to come out of the shadows and be treated like a HUMAN, have the chance to walk freely around the streets, have the chance to travel outside the US and be able to come back to their country (this is also their country because they grew up here), have the privilege to have a driver's license and drive around without any fears (if they have a driver's license they can have insurance. No license = No insurance); and beyond all they deserve the opportunity to fulfill their dreams and move up in life by becoming a professional. For all my WHITE friends, you already have these freedoms is that because you are a human or because you are white (Color does not make any difference, underneath your skin we all have the same color I have proof of that I work in the medical field and I have seen the insides of many people and they all look alike). And for my friend with the PAL-GRANT, it is based on income, that means because you have all the rights that I already mentioned and many more (like work legally in any field you want) you make enough money to pay an education.

For all my ignorant friends, do some research before you start writing TRASH and NON-SENSE. I ask each and everyone of inhumane friends to put yourself in their situation and try to find a solution to this problem, then you will understand how does it feel to not be treated like a human.

By the way my name is Victor L. Lopez I am not Anonymous, I have the guts to tell it the way it is and not hide behind some words.

  18. Like it or not, we are here to STAY! Just sit there and complain while we happily take your jobs. And soon, even the high-end jobs are going to belong to us. Its only a matter of time. Its not our fault white people are too lazy and too stupid to get the job done. You lash out with anger and hate, when we all know your afraid because you know we are right. Remember this comment when the DREAM Act passes.

  19. We need to pass the DREAM ACT. As Americans, we boast about making dreams come true and having better lives because we are in America. People come here to live better lives. What kind of image would we pass if we shatter dreams of thousands of innocents, who were too young to realize the struggle they would face by coming here? We must pass the DREAM ACT for both those innocents and ourselves.

  20. I will do whatever it takes on my behalf to stop the DREAM Act and the immunities and privileges granted to the illegal aliens therein. Illegal aliens are illegal. They are not citizens, nor should there be an easy way for them to gain citizenship.

I am a United States Citizen, and I am in college now. I need help, financially. Why, then, does Congress pursue an agenda to support the illegal alien and not the citizen?

Illegal aliens have been mooching off the system for far too long, and I do not want one cent of my tax receipts to fund an illegal alien in college.

I am proud to see the DREAM Act die once again, and I will be a vocal supporter against it until the day I die.

God bless the 43 in opposition.

"Illegal aliens have been mooching off the system for far too long, and I do not want one cent of my tax receipts to fund an illegal alien in college."

I am pretty sure you are repeating what you heard somewhere and have no idea what you are talking about. You are hating because the system did not give you the opportunity to mooch off the system yourself since your parents probably make enough money to pay for your education and mine together. You have it easy because you are probably white and besides no one will close doors on you because of that.

    freaking looser piece of s@@@@

  23. 35% of the the american army is of spanish speaking people(many mexican poor, I believe) it is a pretty good number for me. what could cause this number to be so hight? A lack of fearless
or an abundance of cowardice from the part of the locals? I do not know. Can anyone tell me?

  25. ugh... these are kids who only want an opportunity at succeeding at life here in this country they call home. i grew up with a mexican friend here in my little home town. at least 85% of us here are white, and the rest are either asian middle eastern black or hispanic/latino. i've known my friend since 2nd grade and we are seniors in high school now so we're practically brothers. two months ago we were talking about our future plans after high school and long story short, he bursted into tears and told me that he didn't know because he didn't have the one document that most of us citizens take for granted... i got chills when he told me why he couldn't go back to his country and he's like a brother to me... i don't want to see him go. he is probably in the top 20 of our whole senior class, he's athletic, a arts/music guy, and he never stops talking about him one day going to college and then the military. i wish i could do something NOW to help him out but all i can do is vote for the right people and pray that something happens.

  29. The Real “American Dream Act” Bill & Counter Attack

First bring back our soldiers from this Afghanistan war that is costly and going nowhere. Middle Eastern and Asians love to see us waste money and go broke fighting for freedom when they don’t really want it. This is their main weapon and we keep falling into their trap. Then we need to regroup military troops and military force to invade/overthrow Mexico’s government turning it into a U.S territory.
The new land will be used as an industrial/business commerce zone. U.S citizens will be able to by property and have a dual citizenship between U.S and Mexico. Mexico will keep its current currency and there current government will be demoted to local municipal law enforcement as long as they surrender to the U.S.
The U.S will be in full control of all laws, local law enforcement, and military control. The path to dual citizenship will require the illegal immigrants living in the U.S to serve in the U.S military for teen years… Along with completing the invasion/overthrow of Mexican government to expand U.S lands, business, and revive our economy. For Mexico citizen requesting to come to the U.S temporary worker programs and legal paths to citizenship & residence will be granted to those who qualify.

    Pass It On!!!

  30. Shut up complaining, you are going to have to pay taxes regardless if unemployment continues.

  31. IT IS SOME REALLY SELFISH PEOPLE OUT HERE!!! You would be crying for unemployment benefits, if you were unemployed too! That is OK though, one day your day it just might happen. God has his way of humbling people. Looking down on folks, and having pride; is wrong. Karma might not get you this way, but it will!

  33. These people will be going to school (paying for it because they cannot get pell-grants or financial aid!!!) making the US a more civilized country. These people will be paying taxes :about 800,000 of them. How can that hurt the economy? It will create more jobs. These students earned it by working hard through school. And The US is supposed to be the land of freedom? where is the freedom where they are scared for their lives? before talking about how white you are and saying nonsense think about the choices you make and put your self in their shoes for one day??? The dream act is not legalizing all illegal immigrants, only the ones that want to continue their education, pay for it, and contribute to this country. They have qualifications like not having a criminal record. Do your research before you talk.
