DREAM Act 2010: GOP Filibuster About Defense Spending Bill

The 2010 DREAM Act is highly controversial.  The bill allows the children of illegal aliens to become US citizens provided they serve in the military or get a college degree.  The supporters of the DREAM act claim that its passage is only right, as the children of illegal immigrants – although illegal immigrants themselves – are only “victims” of their parents decisions.

They claim that passage of the DREAM Act is only “the right thing” to do.

Opponents of the act claim that it should not be the responsibility of the taxpayer to pay for the schooling of illegal immigrants, and that although it’s unfortunate that they do not have a legal status, the fact still remains that they are illegal.

There are a couple things that need to be explored.  First, would the passage of the DREAM Act actually bring over more illegal immigrants? Will parents illegally enter the country in hopes of giving their children a better life? Honestly, if I lived in a country where opportunities were limited, and I thought that by illegally entering another country with my child, that they could have the possibility of a better life…I’d do it in a heartbeat.  Chances are many will think that same way.

The problem with the DREAM Act isn’t the act itself.  It was buried in a Defense spending bill.  The GOP filibuster isn’t directed simply at the DREAM Act. It impacts DADT, the DREAM Act, and many other provisions. The democrats want swift passage without debate, and Republicans want a chance to mull over the bill and make amendments. Therefore, the hopes of a DREAM Act passage aren’t too far fetched.

  1. The only reason DADT wasn’t repealed was the Scheme Act. I’m one of the gays that fought for DADT in the 90?s, it WAS a good thing for us and the republicans NEVER wanted it, they wouldn’t have a problem overturning DADT. So what’s the problem, The Scheme Act! It’s a B.S. scam that doesn’t even include CHILDREN under 12, which is what they keep telling us it’s for, the chirrrrrends! The chain migration allowance will allow the illegals to grant citizenship to their immediate relatives, you know, the people that most likely brought them here illegally. No Dream act now, no dream act ever! My liberal gay tuchas will NEVER EVER FORGET IT WAS THE PRO-ILLEGALS THAT STOPPED THE DADT REPEAL! Keep talking about that all important “Latino Vote” so the rest of the gays will see the Democratic pecking order of priorities. We’re clearly American citizens that don’t mind taking the backseat while our elected representatives work on legislation to grant special rights for ILLEGAL ALIENS……riiiiiiight?

BTW, this legislation has been floating around since 2000. How much of OUR time have the ILLEGALS wasted? Our representatives are there to represent US citizens, yet they keep throwing this bill out there and wasting taxpayers money debating and trying to pass it, the people involved with this annual amnesty attempt should be tried for treason since they’re not representing US citizens. *spits* I especially love hearing how the Dream Act is for “everybody”, but when it fails it’s “Latino voters won’t forget”, silly little bigots think we won’t notice! I guess they didn’t realize the gay voting block isn’t one to be trifled with and unlike the whiny latinos, WE REALLY DO VOTE!

We also won’t forget how quickly The Scheme Act was reintroduced, while our DADT repeal sits. The Democrats just told ALL of the gays where we are on the list of priorities, and apparently equal rights for American citizens aren’t as important as ILLEGALS!

This is trouble, with a big capital T, and if you think the mythical “latino vote” was something to worry about, you’re going to be downright flabbergasted when you see what the gay voting block does.

The sleeping giant did wake up, and guess what, it’s still American!

  4. The Dream Act is floating since 2000 I am not sure if you don't get the point yet, that is how long both side Democrats and Republicans are arguing making non-sense decision about immigration and Dream act not thinking that they ultimately touch million of lives who are still living with the hope for dream. If you are gay you should know how many of your friends get into illegal marriages even with opposite sex just to gain legal status in US, and you have a problem with students who are waiting some for 20+ years to legally legalize their status and without dream act there is no HOPE for them.....

  5. @The first comment,With all do respect,i believe your just a frustrated gay man that has not yet recieved the equal rights you probably well deserve. You are just like the rest of us in the way that you are in the same pool of things congress is yet to worry about, you talk about the things you fight for (DADT) and thats great we live in a world full of diversity and it doesnt mean people cant fight for the things they want as well. It is ok to let your frustration out and express yourself but not when your being so prejudice, discerning, ignorant and selfish. As a WHINY LATINO i want to let you know that i respect gay people and and that we all deserve eaqual rights to further the future of our country and that if we all werent so ignorant when it comes to understanding one another we would all have what we wanted.

  6. A Plan For A Real “American Dream Act” Bill & Counter Attack

First bring back our soldiers from this Afghanistan war that is costly and going nowhere. Middle Eastern and Asians love to see us waste money and go broke fighting for freedom when they don’t really want it. This is their main weapon and we keep falling into their trap. Then we need to regroup military troops and military force to invade/overthrow Mexico’s government turning it into a U.S territory.
The new land will be used as an industrial/business commerce zone. U.S citizens will be able to by property and have a dual citizenship between U.S and Mexico. Mexico will keep its current currency and there current government will be demoted to local municipal law enforcement as long as they surrender to the U.S.
The U.S will be in full control of all laws, local law enforcement, and military control. The path to dual citizenship will require the illegal immigrants living in the U.S to serve in the U.S military for teen years… Along with completing the invasion/overthrow of Mexican government to expand U.S lands, business, and revive our economy. For Mexico citizen requesting to come to the U.S temporary worker programs and legal paths to citizenship & residence will be granted to those who qualify.
This action is to liberate Mexico from its corrupt government that is destroying it self and the U.S slowly. It is also a test for them to redeem them selves for us to see, how much heart they have, how patriotic they are, and much they love this country including us, laws in all.

    Pass It On!!!

  7. This is not a matter of who deserves their rights more, gays or illegals. The fact is that they BOTH deserve to live happily and soundly- without worrying about simple daily tasks or enjoying life. To the angry gay man- You are no better than anyone else because you were born in this country. Unfortunately, some people were brought here at very young ages and have lived here for more than 95% of their lives. They should not have to worry about being simple, good people (for example, getting in trouble for driving their legal pregnant girlfriend to the hospital because she cant drive while in labor) just like you shouldnt have to worry about not being able to marry the one you choose. Can you even imagine being taken away from the only place you've ever truly known, while you have a newborn at home, a family to feed, and brought to a country you know only from stories? Its a horrifying, and all to real of a thought for so many people here, who DIDNT makes this decision for themselves. You are no better than the people who tell you not to be with the person you love...they just dont understand, and apparently neither do you.

  8. "Unfortunately, some people were brought here at very young ages and have lived here for more than 95% of their lives. They should not have to worry about being simple, good people " And the relatives that brought them over? can we mandate that they confess the culprit so they are brought to justice. After all it is a Federal crime to enter the country illegally right. so as a guardian they are guilty, the evidence is that the victim is recieving citizenship right? I suggest a fine in the amount of the average of money spent in public schooling, healthcare, wic, and food stamps of one child up until the age of the person being benefited. That or 20 years without parole and deportation afterwards. What liberals don't see with their bleeding heart stories is that we need to deterr the will to continue coming over instead of promoting it. My dad stood in line to get his resident card and as a child so did I, so as a legal latino guess what i see what illegals do to entire neighborhoods, run ER rooms dry and bleed the school system. I have been there, I walked amongst them, they dont want to be american, they want you to speak spanish and make the forms in spanish and to make public services speak the language as well, oh wait that already happened right? Wake up well intended yet ignorant people. If the lower social/economical classes have lost Latin America to corruption/drug lords, what makes you think for 1 second they will be examplary members of society here? Just look at the Texas border, Houston, San antonio and El Paso.

  9. "Through no fault of their own.." That's called fate. How about we import millions of starving Rwandans simply because they are hungry due to no fault of their own. If we grant legal status to illegals without them having been through the immigration process -- that's a slap in the face to those immigrants who followed procedures. If these illegal children want to become Americans -- they can go back to their country of citizenship, visit the US Consulate and apply for an immigrant visa just like everyone else. Just because they are breaking the law "through no fault of their own" doesn't give them exemption from the law. If they're old enough to go to college, then they are old enough to realize that THEY are currently breaking the law. Just because lawbreaking is their family tradition doesn't justify rewarding it.
