A 99ers Unemployment Extension and Tier 5 Not Discussed by President Obama

A Tier 5 unemployment extension and benefits for jobless Americans is necessary to stimulate the economy, yet when Obama delivered his economic address yesterday he made no indication that he was ready, willing, or even able to extend unemployment.

Of course, there was lots of talk about keeping taxes low for the middle class, and also plenty of blame put on the previous Republican administration.  However, we have been under the Obama administration for nearly two years, and things aren’t yet looking up.

That’s not to say that the president doesn’t care about the unemployed – I think he does. However, with the mid-term elections coming up, he cannot afford to lose many democrats.  John Boehner, the Republican Minority Leader, has even spoke out saying that Obama needs to FIRE his economic advisors.

If the Republicans gain control of the house, Boehner will likely be the speaker of the House, the post held by Nancy Pelosi. This means that Obama needs to make an attractive agenda – and fast.

It’s sad, but the Tier 5 unemployment extension isn’t really on the forefront of politicians minds. They don’t really seem to care about the issues on main street, they care about keeping their golden parachutes and cushy jobs.  Without the unemployment extension, many Americans are out of luck in a time where help isneeded more than ever.

  1. How SELF-serving our elected officials are being revealed to be!

I had such faith in Obama and his team --- how disappointed I am becoming day by day...

When you are employed it is, usually, Monday thru Friday 8 - 5, when you are UNEMPLOYED it is 24/7 EVERY DAY - ALL DAY (& night) too!! It is impossible to express the stress of long-term unemp --- I know, I've tried with my family and friends!! They shrug it off "it'll get better" or "you'll make it" the first 6 to 9 months. Now, no contact or any calls of encouragement. For their part, WHAT do you say?? Unfortunately, many of their comments, to my ears, simply "blame the victims"!!! As if, somehow, YOU could have prevented this and so now you shouldn't protest...

I believe there is a thread of hope that Obama will "take on" the powers that be and become a force for good for his party and the country by leading the call for doing right by our fellow Americans and provide reassurance that they will not be discarded during this Depression. Yes, figure out grand plans to restart the economy and bring back jobs. Plan work programs, education programs, reset - perhaps temporarily - Social Security retirement age, encourage corporations to splitting jobs - it is better to cut every one a few hours than the downward spiral of layoffs, etc.

BUT, please provide confidence in the future for this country from the bully pulpit --- President Obama --- only YOU CAN do it !

  2. I am a registered Republican that will vote pro- Democrat this November. Who ever votes for a Tier 5 Ext. will get my VOTE. Its borderline criminal for Congress not to be helping the unemployed that are unemployed at no fault of their own. Pass a Tier 5, Its the right thing to do... Obama has had 2 years and doesn't deserve a second term.

    ReplyDelete
  3. The "registered Republican that will vote pro-Democrat" is a self-serving fraud and extremely ignorant to the issue.

The democrats will not pass tier 5 right now because they would look bad when unemployment goes up 1% across the board just before the election.

After the election (and the pounding they take), they will care less about the unemployed as most of the democrats will find themselves in the same situation. Of course, they'll turn into lobbyists as all career politicians do after they leave office.

Face the cold, hard truth 99er. Time to accept a job at Taco Bell or start your own damn business. I recommend it be a cash business so you can keep as much money out of Uncle Sam's pockets as possible.

  4. Ok anonymous I hope you never get unemployed. Try getting a job at Taco bell even that is not easy especially with businesses cutting back on costs. Cut labor they say the economy is bad. Use an employee to do 2 peoples work. Get a life.

  5. It appears that because an Extension, that was
signed on July 23rd 2010,there is no reason to
direct attention to himself,by opening the Tier
5 dialog. The Congress will however be forced
to vote on the extension in November. There will
be a Vote then. They can't affford not to. They
have to much riding on the November elections.
Unemployment is almost at 10% you can't ignor
that for the winter months, you will see a Tier
    5.

  6. If you can't get a job at Taco Bell, I suggest you move from whatever economic shithole you are in.

Seriously. If you're in one of these major cities where unemployment is at 50%, maybe your lazy ass trying to get a job where there are no jobs would be the problem.

Go to where the fucking jobs are. You have the Internet at your fingertips and rather than look for a job, you are crying on hopeless tier 5 websites.

  7. I hope all the unemployed losers in here freeze to death this winter. Massive LULZ!

  12. Hey Charles Johnson...you must lead a very very boring life if you have nothing better to do than bash the unemployed. Educate yourself prior to posting your downright hateful messages. You are amoral to be so demeaning and dwonright cruel to your fellow Americans. And, I bet you voted for Obama. I certainly hope that you are not raising any children.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Just because those are low-income jobs, does not mean they are hiring. Plus, even if you rent a small apartment, and have 1 child, those jobs will not support a family, especially through the winter. The Bush tax cuts not being extended would put enough money into being able to extend benefits. Just extend them, so everyone can drop this issue. Get it over with, and move on.

What brings you here is you all want pity and to be a big cry baby. Get off your lazy buttocks and look harder. There won't be a tier 5, so the longer you sit on your fat ass, on the couch, the longer you will be broke. Quit your sniveling whining, no body cares. NOW POUND THE PAVEMENT CRY BABY. BIG DADDY

Until they have to live hand to mouth they are unable to understand the truth of the issue. How horribly selfish americans have become to only care about helping themselves. Maybe the 99er's should camp out on the senators and uncaring employed's lawns and doorsteps this coming holiday season.

  30. The only way that Congress will pass the 99er extension is if there is constant visible pressure on them to do so. How can we work together to do that across the country?

  32. We have to make the 99er extension demand a big issue of these elections. Any ideas on how?

  34. The figures on the number of job openings per unemployed include minimum wage jobs too. There are not enough jobs, period. Moving will not work; there are not enough jobs for everyone, period.
I am also a registered Republican who is voting Democratic this time.
Regardless, we have a Democratic president to stop current Republican economic lunacy.
The unemployed and their supporters must band together against opposing forces and overpower them. Then, their demonic comments will be meaningless.

  42. I agree it is his last. I did not vote for him the first time and I certainly will not the next time. I am a 99er but I am also a proud Republican. The Reps did want to pass a Tier 5 but without all the stipulations the Dems wanted added to the legislation. This occurred months ago and of course the media simply reported that the Reps voted it down.

  51. This isn't only about getting an extension. We need to get rid of this Administration and it's policies which have just about ruined the private sector. They won't admit that their policies have failed nor will they change course. We need some people in the White House who are competent, experienced, etc. What we have now are a bunch of "scholars" who have no real world experience; only an ideaology which they adapted from their left-wing professors who brainwashed them all their years in college. We need Economists who know what it takes to create jobs! Contrary to what some people who write on this blog say, MOST OF US 99ERS WANT TO WORK! I'm from the old school and I hate having to take handouts from the government. This is the first time I have ever been without a job. Being 60+ years, I am thankful that I am in good health, and I am not ready to retire; not mentally or financially. I say vote out the existing bafoons and vote in some knowledgeable decision-makers.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I say vote out ANYONE who holds a position in our "government" now. Vote in all new. The representatives holding positions now are so removed from the American reality that it is disheartning and I, personally have lost faith in all alspects of this country's leadership from the small town mayors to our President. We need to out them all. It is not like they will be in the unemployemnt line. It is almost like doing them a favor because they are set for life with the retirement package. How is this the American way? Damned if you do and damned if you don't. I have simply lost faith in our leadership.

  58. Why do all people who have a job or are Republican tell the unemployed to take a job at Taco Bell, McDonalds, etc....DONT YOU PEOPLE GET IT!!!??? 1st: A condition to receiving UE is that a work search is REQUIRED. 2nd: (and most importantly) Their are VERY few people who will not take any kind of job. What you Repubics do not realize is that a person can work part time at Taco Bell, McDonalds (which that's all these businesses offer is part time work, at places like those mentioned above, Walmarts, Targets, etc) AND STILL COLLECT PARTIAL UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS!!! So it's NOT as if they are just not taking jobs because they are lower paying, or will lose their UE benfits(they would have BOTH forms of income to supplement until they found something better) it's because their are NO JOBS! People are being turned down because they are over-qualified, too old, have too poor a credit score (imagine that after being out of work for 1-2 years!), or just over looked period!!! The stats say there is 5 applicants for ever 1 job available - I say BULL - it's more like 100 applicants for every one job! I know a gal whose business opened up a position (ONE position) and they had over 300 applications a FULL WEEK before the deadline - I'm sure it exceeded 400 by the time the deadline came around. So 400 people were fighting for ONE job! GET A CLUE REPUBLICANS!!! There are NO jobs out there!!! What few there are 100 people or more are fighting for!!!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Why are you assuming that it is the Republicans telling you to take a job at Taco Bell? I am a Republican and I am also a 99er. And, I did not vote for Obama. It is not a matter of party affiliation that determines employment, it is the ecomomic situation at hand.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I will also be voting straight Democrat this November. The problem with the Republicans is first their labeling of the unemployed as lazy (see post above) and 2nd and again, most importantly, is that Obama can send idea after idea to the house and senate but it takes both houses to approve the bills. Many have passed the house but as we have the filibuster the Republican Senate keeps blocking each and every attempt anyone (including Obama) makes to get our economy and country moving in a forward direction. The republicans think that by blocking a spending measure (jobs bill, tax breaks for businesses, extending UE) that the people will be "happy" about "less spending" when in reality the PEOPLE are the ones who need the help! They have left the people by the wayside, waiting while they vacation, waiting while they argue with the Dems, waiting while they filibuster. People have lost their homes, their savings, their lifestyle, their families torn apart by desperation and financial stress. The Republicans have made a bad gamble voting NO to everything and will find that out come election time.

    ReplyDelete
  61. To poster above - Your right, I appologize for making that assumption. Unfortunately my experience of late has been that those who tell people to just "get a job", calling the unemployed/under-employed lazy (many Republican reps have done this) are also Republicans themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  62. "Republicans have said that they are really, really are in favor of unemployment extensions, they just want them offset with reductions in other federal spending." (September 9th, 2010.
Michael Colliss) I ask, for the sake of the unemployed, why can't our elected officials come to an agreement to end our suffering the consequences of both political parties actions. Republicans and Democrates caused this situation. It was not just one.

  80. For the might all seeing folks who sit in their cubicle surfing the web all day; I am a 99er and I have been struggling to keep my new business alive for 3 years. In a healthy economy over 70% of new businesses fail. How do you think they would succeed now when no one has start-up capital? I work 18 hours a day or more, eating and sleeping are truly rewards or even treats. I am not complaining, I'm hopeful that my shaky foundation will someday be something I can rely on to pay the bills. Starting your own business is a scary proposition, I'm sure most folks who are touting it be done have never had to rely on their own business as a source of primary income. If you did, you wouldn't recommend it in this economy. Unemployment can only help. Especially when a percentage of my customers can't pay their bills because they were laid off or ran out of unemployment. It affects us all whether you realize it or not, If Mike can't pay Joe then Joe can't pay John and John can't pay you and you can't pay.... Get it?
