New Zealand Earthquake 2010 Photos, Pictures, and Video

The New Zealand earthquake 2010 photos, pictures, and video are starting to surface. The earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand luckily didn't claim any lives, but it did do significant property damage. There are a significant number of earthquakes each year in the "Ring of Fire" which does include the New Zealand area. However, it's been several years since a quake has been felt in such a populated area.

New Zealand has a curfew in place to keep people off the streets after dark. This is to protect property and people from criminal mischief that happens during widespread power outages. The curfew makes it that much easier for law enforcement to make sure that everything remains safe.

The quake happened at about 4:35 AM local time, and the quake was centered about 35 miles outside of Christchurch. So far, estimates peg the damage at $1.4 billion.

New Zealand Earthquake 2010 Pictures, Curfew, and Aftershocks

A New Zealand earthquake 2010 transpired yesterday, and now the citizens of Christchurch are under a curfew. Aftershocks continue, and some of them have been reported to be around 5 on the Richter scale.

Although New Zealand falls in the so-called "ring of fire" where lots of earthquakes are felt in the Pacific Rim, they haven't had a quake in such a populated area in many, many years.

The population of Christchurch is about 372,000.

The best thing is that no one is reported to have been killed by the earthquake.

This is only the latest natural disaster. One of the most devastating of the year was the Pakistan floods, and you can see pictures of that here.

New Zealand Earthquake 2010 Affects Kiwis

The New Zealand earthquake in 2010 was a 7.4 on the Richter scale, and has caused significant property and infrastructure damage, but has not caused any reported deaths or serious injuries.  This is only the most recent earthquake to strike in the world. 


The event transpired at about 4:34 am local time on Saturday morning. The quake doesn't pose any tsunami threats. 


About 75% of the city of Christchurch in New Zealand is without power after the earthquake.  The incident caused sewer and water lines to break, and as such residents are advised to conserve water, avoid traveling unnecessarily, and check on neighbors. 


Those that have travel plans to Christchurch may be disappointed as the quake has closed the airport.  Aftershocks, including one that was over 5 on the Richter scale, were felt. 


The worst earthquake in New Zealand was on January 23, 1855 - roughly 15 years after European colonization began in 1840. It was an 8.2 on the Richter scale.
